Football in Los Angeles?

Posted September 19th, 2011 by Adrian M.

Today many consider football to be America’s new past time, which formally belonged to baseball. There is currently no professional football team in Los Angeles, leaving a void for many football fans that live in the area. My peers and I did not grow up with a football team that we could call our own. We had no choice, but to cheer for professional teams outside of Los Angeles. Los Angeles was once a city which had two football teams at one point in time. In 1994 both the Raiders and the Rams decided to relocate from Los Angeles to other cities. The Raiders moved to Oakland, while the Rams moved further away to St. Louis. Many of today’s football fans in Los Angeles cheer for the Raiders due to that fact that they played in the Los Angeles Coliseum and the Rams played in Anaheim. However, it is not enough for some sports fans whom rather cheer for a team that represents their city and feel it should have it’s own team because it is one of the largest and most well known metropolitan cities in America. Recently, a sports company known as Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) proposed plans for a football stadium in downtown right next to the Staples Center in order to attract an NFL team to come to Los Angeles, finally giving Los Angeles a team they can call their own. Likely teams to possibly relocate to Los Angles are the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Although, it is uncertain whether the plans for the new stadium will follow through, the news is exciting for the city of Los Angeles, especially for football fans, and unemployed construction workers. The success of football teams can make the people of their city proud and unify them. As of now, the Los Angeles Lakers are LA’s main unifier due to their recent success in winning multiple championships.

A city’s economy can also benefit and improve from having a football team because it can bring in extra revenue for the city. Unlike basketball and baseball, football has the biggest sports event in all of America, the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl generates the most money out of any other sporting event. Building the stadium will also create job opportunities for constructions workers and other job fields. California has a 12% unemployment rate, which is only second to Nevada. Building the Stadium will definitely create more job opportunities and is one of the main reasons why Senator Tony Strickland of Thousand Oaks said, “To me, this is a no-brainer.” I have to agree with the Senator Strickland because it will not only fulfill the absence of a football team in Los Angeles, but also give back to the community by creating job opportunities for its residents.
