What Is Poetry For?

This is a video I chose out of 3.  The other 2 were poems themselves.  Sence it was hard for me to make sense of them both, I decided to choose the video I could relate to.  I guess I could’ve called my self a bit of a poet when I was younger.  Some of the answers where just what I might’ve said too.  Sadly, some hidden talents you find are soon lost.  If only I had the time to write it on paper I might still be doing it now.  Better yet if I found the answer to that question back then, I’d find enjoyment in writing it to begin with.

“What is poetry for?”  This is a question few students would ask in school as well as few teachers would know the answer to.  Some might say it was what we call cool nowadays.  Simple done with no questions asked.  Do we take the time to look up the word cool…rarely, I might say considering I just did now.  Same goes for Poetry.  A simple definition can’t help answer this question, so I’ll go through each person’s answer(s) one by one: (how convenient, it’s a total of 10)

1. “Trespassing and feeling at home at the same time”  In other words, 2 things in one.  When our class did the/a metaphor assignment, my metaphors were similar to this one.  One thing yet another.

2. “Change, weekness, and celebration”  I thing this refers to the what a poetry is about.  Noticing something in the day that’s different than others, good or bad.

3. “Experiencing the full range of human emotions”  Sharing the feelings you or another person might have been having one day at that very moment.   Better than answering a “How are you?” with just a “good” or “horrible”.

4. “It is for itself, it is to be”  It may as well be in its own league all together.

5. “To ask questions and to think about what their answers might be”  Taking the time out of your day to just let your brain wonder.  Something I use to do but do less often considering school.  It’s alright to get distracted every once in a while.  It may be the only thing that’ll safeguard ones creativity.

6. “To track and mark the hidden speech,  …life, …dream”  As I said earlier, some hidden talents you find are soon lost.  If something isn’t writen in stone, it’ll be forgotten.

7. “For everyone to recognize how many layers they’re made of and how much depth they have”  It doesn’t just stop at your feelings, it’s how you put them into words.

8. “To divine the human enterprise”  Have a positive effect on others rather than a negative one such as an argument would.

9. ”For helping you live life, to find out what other people are thinking about what it means to be alive”  More reason to keep on living than what we already know.

10. “Makes you dive down and realize how many fathoms you have inside”  Getting to now yourself better.  You won’t find out much if your to busy to make some time for yourself.

Now that I’ve looked at what I wrote about their answer, I could safely say I’ve found that answer a long time ago.  Here’s my attempt to make a poem(I use to see people I know do all the time):

Looking at nature was just the beginning for me

I moved on to space

But the earth pulled me back in

Never to see that same star again

But there’s hope

That I’ll reach an even brigher star

One that I’ll keep with me to the end

…That was fun, I actually enjoyed typing this post.  I don’t even know if I enjoyed the others, but for now on I’ll type that I enjoyed typying a post when I do.  I’d like to think of this post, not only as an answer to this question, but to inform those who read it…not that I get any readers.  Have a nice life!

Low-Tech Invention 6/12

Under the sign of his “eco-gym,” Gimnasio Ecológico Lumen, Manuel de Arriba Ares has turned the demon of entropy on its head. Making use of the very waste and byproducts of the modern entropic economy, Arriba has created a truly practical monument in the form of a supremely low-tech gymnasium. Its fitness machines, created with a good deal of physical effort over three years from raw and junked materials such as wood, rope, and rubber, directly mirror both the design and functionality of those found within its wasteful counterpart.

Located in the small town of Valdespino de Somoza in the north of Spain, Arriba offers free access for all to this functional work of Art Brut, a wonderful Heath Robinsonesque assemblage constructed from remnants of strollers, boats, bicycles, and automobiles salvaged from neighboring dumps. Helpful signs, painted on the tarnished white remnants of refrigerators, instruct the would-be eco-gymnast on exercises and operation of the intricate machinery, reflecting Arriba’s knowledge and experience over many years as a physical education teacher.

Level Up Without Limit

An F/A-18F Super Hornet hits the speed of sound. As the plane pushes air away, the temperature drops and water vapor in the air forms a ring cloud around it.  I tend to somehow come across things familiar to me & if you got to the same school as me, you may have seen this before too.  I wasn’t really looking for it, but I knew that I’d seen it before.  What a sight it is too.

In video games, when you reach another level, there’s always some indication.  In other words, you see the difference.  Same applies to the image above.  You definitely don’t see that on an every day when a plane passes by.  I’m just wondering how they got the image to come out so clearly.  Now, imagine you had a sign/indication of every thing you accomplished.  Not so clearly seen is it?  You’d think a reward like a trophy/metal would be the same but that’s incorrect.

As you know, games have their limits & you move on to the next.  Life shouldn’t be the same as a video game, get something for what you accomplish & moving on to the next thing saying you completed it.  In real life nothings quite complete just by saying it is nor is it when someone else thinks you did.  You don’t always need a reward for your actions.  It’s done when you’ve mastered it.  In other words, keep up the hard work.

A trophy/metal doesn’t really prove much now does it.  Even if your names on it, it represents the past.  Can one be so sure that they can do it again?…Not really.  If someone asked you if you were good at something, how would you reply?  If you are indeed good at it & say yes, it’s only in the eyes of the person who asked.  For all you know, you could just be “good enough” as some may say.  Instead of being the one asked, ask someone your self & challenge them for their title.  There’s always someone out there who’s better.  Don’t just stand there, find them.

Saying no means there’s always room for improvement.  Even after the person who ask heard you say that, they’d still have their ideals of you.  No problem with getting better before bragging about it.  Just saying yes is considered bragging.  The only good side to that is your more likely to be challenged, but you should still be a good sport & say something like, “nice try” or “challenge me again some day”.  There bound to come again with alittle more competition.

You have no one to answer to but yourself.  I’m sure you may have heard the phrase , “I/you’ve reached your limit” or “I’m tired/you seem tired”.  I’d know, considering I’m a runner.  As a runner, there’s such a thing as not push your self hard enough, but there’s also such a thing as puching yourself too hard.  I tend to push myself too hard & I’m perfectly fine.  I even have asthma, but that doesn’t stop me.

There has been many times where I thought I reached my limit.  Do you think you’ll find that limit if you push your self hard enough?  In my opinion, there’s no limit to what you can accomplish.  Everyones body tells them to stop at some point, but why not reach that point & see how it feels for yourself.  Think of it as setting a record.  The next time you do it may just last a bit longer.

As you may be able to tell, I’m in this years 2009-2010 running club.  Recently, we had a 15k run.  As for how long that was in miles, I did not know.  As I ran it, I constanly slowed down to get water after sprinting half of it.  The very week after that, we were going to do a 10 mile run around a large park.  When I ran this run, it was with good speed the whole way with only 2 drinking fountain breaks.  It wasn’t until after that run that I found out the 15k was 9 miles.  I was suprised that I ran the 10 miles better than the 9 miles.  If I knew it was more, I might’ve ran slower but because I thought otherwise, I didn’t consider reaching my limit.  Thus, I had no limit to begin with.  It was all in my head & thinking I had a limit prevented me from getting better.  I now run without thinking of that limit in order to improve.

Lets go to that image above one more time.  Do you think we’ll stop at just passing the speed of sound?  In my opinion, we’ll soon be challenging the speed of light.  A person who thinks without limitations is soon to come up with the answer as have so many others who have come up with unthought of theories & inventions.  Where would we be if we all restricted ourselfs to limits?  This is why I say to you, “Level Up Without Limit”.

Camping Near You

Image for Telling Stories: Norman Rockwell from the Collections of George Lucas and Steven Spielberg

Hand Shadows

by Mary Cornish

My father put his hands in the white light
of the lantern, and his palms became a horse
that flicked its ears and bucked; an alligator
feigning sleep along the canvas wall leapt up
and snapped its jaws in silhouette, or else
a swan would turn its perfect neck and drop
a fingered beak toward that shadowed head
to lightly preen my father’s feathered hair.
Outside our tent, skunks shuffled in the woods
beneath a star that died a little every day,
and from a nebula of light diffused
inside Orion’s sword, new stars were born.
My father’s hands became two birds, linked
by a thumb, they flew one following the other.

It’s true that the title of this poem is Hand Shadows, but that’s not what I’ll be focusing this post on.  I just so happen to come across the poem by name & I remembered I came across some art work earlier that would discribe such a poem.  I want to focus on camping.  Nowadays, children don’t experience the joy of camping, so I’d like to give some pointers to those who haven’t camped & plan on doing it sometime in the future.

Considering I’m a Boy Scout, I know how far one must go to find an area to camp if you live the city.  Not only that, but also the money it’ll take to make the preparations.  Because of this, people don’t think of camping to begin with.  I’m sure most people don’t know how to camp let alone have fun on a camp out without bringing some form of technology.  I’m probably going to tell you a few couple stories of mine, so I’ll remember to the best of my ability.

I’ll start with the the earliest.  One rememberable moment of mine was when I got lost at a camp ground.  It was near a beach & I was camping with my Boy Scout troop.  I noticed every one had left.  A parent had told me they went to the beach.  I got board & went out of my way to go look for then.  I was young & to tell you the truth, didn’t know where I was going.  I may have known the directions to the beach but I didn’t know where they’d be.  So, before I got to the beach as I was on my way, I decided to go back & wait for their return.  You can guess what happened after that.  It took me a while, but I managed to remember how our tents were arranged & that we were camping near the rest room.  After that, I knew how important it was to walk with a buddy whenevery I planned on going somewhere with no signs of direction.

Sadly, I tend to forget where I’ve been because I’m not planning the trip.  I believe all of my camping trips were with the Boy Scouts.  My parents came to 2 to 3 but it wasn’t as a family.  There’s oviously a difference between a camping trip & a family trip.  So far my family trips have been theme parks, cruises, & visits to out-of-state relatives.  We’ve never had a family camp out & I’m sure most families are the same.  If you do, I’d be suprized & tell you to ask others to come with you the next time you plan to.

Barbeques & sleep overs are probably the closest thing to camping when you live in the city.  Picnics at a park are no were close to camping.  Here’s a definition of camping:  a group of people who temporarily configure shelter & gear in an open air location(outdoors).  Of course there was more than one definition, so I mixed them up a bit.  As for the reason for camping, any will do.  I’m sure experience & memories is more than enough reason to go on a camping trip.

When it comes to fun, let’s look back at the picture & the peom.  When camping, there’s a separation of what one does during the day & night.  Hand shadows is just one example of what you can do for fun at night.  Others would be card games, board games, campfire songs, story telling, riddles, jokes, or just a friendly conversation.  During the day, if the weathers good, there’s always sports.  Other than that, there’s, fishing, swimming, hiking, & more.  What would you do for fun on a camping trip?  Keep in mind that technology isn’t going to last long in the wild.

Food & knowing how to cook it is the most important thing you need if you plan to have breakfast, dinner, & lunch for your stay.  The longest I’ve camped out is a week.  Sometimes one has to add on to what they brought with them by buying something from a local store.  I’m sure everyone forgets a thing or 2 to bring.  What foods woud you bring if you were planning the trip?  Don’t forget take into consideration how much the food costs.

Boy Scouts isn’t the only way to get experience in camping.  I’m sure there’s other organizationa as well as neighbors & friends that would be more than happy to have you join them.  Here’ a list of The Scout Outdoor Essentials (straight from the Boy Scout Handbook):

1. Pocketknife

2. First Aid Kit

3, Extra Clothing

4. Rain Gear

5, Water Bottle

6, Flashlight

7. Trail Food

8. Matches & Fire Starters

9. Sun Protection

10. Map & Compass

Do you think this list is missing anything?  In my opinion, it’s as good as it gets when it comes to camping, but when it comes to the tripitself, you’ll need money & ID of course.  Have a well prepared trip!

Inside Yourself

An article I found stated that most of our life is spent battling against ourself.  We begin to forget who we really are.  Some start to think they need to look like their admired celebrity.  In other words, a role model in which to live by their stadards.  I didn’t have much of a role model by it still had a big impact on who I am today.  It was a cartoon character of al things.  At the time it solved many of my problems but eventually I had to grow out of it.  I felt that living as you saw someone else was not only mentally, but physically impossible as well.  I’m glad I didn’t take it as far as to come up with these conclusions:

‘If I could look like them, my life would be perfect’
‘If I had their money, I wouldn’t have any worries’
‘If I could buy the most fashionable clothes I would feel great about myself’
‘If only I change my personality I would find the perfect partner’

Nowadays, anyone who knows me well, knows I’m not quick to ever thing of changing the person I am today.  “When we go searching for our ideal self we are [wasting] energy on a needless war; the war between our perceived self (the way we see ourselves) and our ideal self (the way we would like to be)”, says the article.  At this point, you can say I went throught that at an early age.  Obviously, a cartoon character wouldn’t effect the way I ate at such an early age like the article stated.  I’ll just bring up how I reacted to what others thought of the way I looked.

At some point in my life I got many compliments I wasn’t looking for considering I wasn’t trying to impress anyone.  I’d rather not go into detail for some readers may feel sorry for the way I would react when I did get a compliment or sorry for the person who didn’t get the response they had hoped for.  Most of the time I would ignore any compliment that came my way.  I felt there was no need for it considering I don’t compliment others myself.  Sure, I use to exersize every day, but because of what others said about it, I eventually stopped.  I felt they were misinterpreting why I exersized in the first place.  I was trying to become my ideal self but I didn’t think about how others would react. (In short words, I didn’t like the attention)

This article stated, “Your perceived self is the self that needs most loving yet a lot of people disregard themselves every day, instead choosing to love their ideal self”.  In my opinion, it’s trying to become your ideal self as I did.  After that, it shows an example of where you should put your effort.  Some times I try to be the opposite of what others think of me, but most of the time there right.  “So it is with your perceived self. You should look for ways to work better with your perceived self and accept yourself for who [you] are at the moment, knowing that change will come through gentle coaxing and encouragement and not forever declaring war with yourself.”

5 Steps to accepting your perceived self:

  1. “Acknowledge it”
If there’s something you don’t like about yourself, acknowledge it. For example, I acknowledge the fact that I’m a bit anti-social.
  2. “Accept it”
Weather you like it or not, accept the fact for the moment, that you have something you dislike about yourself.  I feel that small talk is pointless or a waste of time.
  3. “Thank yourself”
To acknowledge and accept something about yourself which you are not happy with takes guts and honesty. Thank yourself for that.  Considering I know, I’m now capable of change.
  4. “Know why you want change”
If you want change to happen, know exactly why you want the change.  Get right down to the core of ‘why’. For example: I want to talk to others when I have time to spare – Why? So I can learn a thing or 2 about & maybe make a new friend – Why? So I can always have a friend by my side - Why? So I don’t waste time play video games or watching TV – Why?, You should get the picture by now, just get deep down to the root of why you want to change.
  5. “Gentle change as opposed to drastic change”
Gently coaxing yourself to change helps you to feel less stressed.  You will find by doing this change will happen more naturally and the momentum will build up into the change you want.  In class, I stated on a Journal Entry that I made a dramatic change causing friends & family to worried.  It was almost as if they couldn’t recognize me.  “Slow & steady wins the race”, may not be the right advice but it has the same concept like, “don’t jump the gun”.

Considering I can’t tell if I’ve finish the “cycle of any change” as the article puts it after these 5 steps, I’ll leave it to the articles example.

“The way others see you”
Your perceived self is not necessarily the way others see you.  You may stress over what they think or become over confident based on what they think of you.  “No matter how many times someone tells you that you are good at something…nothing anybody says will change you”.  You are the only person capable of changing youself.

“Don’t be too hard on yourself”
Most people want to change something about themselves even celebrities themselves, we’re all on the same boat. You want what they have and they want what you have. Accept yourself for who you are but acknowledge that you want to change, if you really do, and gently coax yourself.  Then there will be peace between the perceived self and the ideal self.

Sagrada Família

Spain - Barcelona - Antoni Gaudí - Sagrada Família - Fotopedia

When I first started looking for pictures, I was going to pick a painting.  Then when I saw this web site, I thought, “why not an image we all pass by every now & then without thinking about”.  The first image I saw was the statue of a face with a cube shaped head.  I clicked it because it was something I’d never seen before.  It ended up being a slide show of 62 photos.  It could’ve been more or it could’ve been less.  They are only so many hours in a day & only so much room a camera can hold, but the photographer picked out the best 62.  How long do you think it would take to pick out the best 10 out of 100 pictures you took?  Same applies to choosing what music you  to put on a MP3 player (ipod to be exact).

The images reminded me of a thought I had recently.  It was that just about all the pictures taken in the world are different even if you take it in the same place.  There are many factors that may have changed it: the angle, zoom, time of day, season, way the image comes out (b&w or color), people, camera itself (something stuck on the lense), & more.  The same thing applies to drawing or painting an image.  Sure, you can set a camera still or copy the image more than once, but taking it one day and going back to it is like looking at the sky.  The weather is always changing as the clouds float by.

I didn’t just look at the images though.  I was also able to click on them & read some information on each individual image.  I found out that the images were taken in a massive, privately-funded Roman Catholic church that has been under construction in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain since 1882 and is not expected to be complete until at least 2026.  A portion of the building’s interior is scheduled to open for public worship and tours by September of 2010.  Next year from now, right.

Considered the master-work of know to be renowned Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926), the project’s vast scale and idiosyncratic design have made it one of Barcelona’s (and Spain’s) top tourist attractions for many years.  If I knew how much he got paid, I’d considered doing it too.  Nowadays, there’s alot of better ways to make money, but I’ll still put it on my list of things to consider.  Do you think Antoni planned for his creation to become a tourist attraction?  In my opinion, a church doesn’t really need to be decorated, especially for so long.  I’m guess Spain must have a lot of patient Catholics to be waiting for over 100 years to see (most of which have died).

Most of these issues are not thought of & there are a lot more where that came from.  These can inculed: how much will the end result will cost, why the particular statue was made (such as the snails), where did the pattern ideas come from, why was it built so high, is it considered safe, why was it give the it has, etc..?  If you’ve  seen all the images, you wouldn’t be surprised  that it took over 100 years to make.  Last question: if you had a life time job, what would it be?  It would seem architect Antoni Gaudi found his & must’ve enjoyed doing it even if the pay was low in my opinion, not that I would suspect that to be the case.

By the way, the full name of the temple is Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia meaning ”Expiatory Temple of the Holy Family” in English.

Low-Tech Invention 4/12

The concept of video telephony has gotten quite old. You would think the latest thing would be used often, but Aram Bartholl says nowadays cheap web cams and fast internet connections made video chat on the computer quite popular. (And it’s also possible to place video calls on all new mobile phones and networks but he’s never seen anybody using it. It’s still just to expensive.)  I agree with what he says, but of course one wouldn’t see these on a school campus. So I’ll just add that I aim every now & then. Sadly, I’ve been the one always starting up a conversation. With my imac computer, I can video chat, but it doesn’t always mean a friend can do the same.

Aram Bartholl says, “The general idea of video telephony is quite obvious and seams to be the next step after the good old telephone wich has been around for someting like 100 years. But is the image really a usefull addition to the voice? Is it maybe more interesting to see what the telephone partner is seeing?” In my opinion, one doesn’t needed to see who they’re talking to unless it’s long distance, or else set up a time & place to meet. If you want to see what your telephone partner is seeing, it’s certainly a loss of privacy and most people look at their own screen rather than looking at the other person.

Aram Bartholl also said there’s one very crucial moment about the video image showing a portrait, “If we talk to a person face to face (and this is what video chatting tries to imitate) you normally do have eye contact…”. He believes one of the main reasons why video chat doesn’t really appeal to him is the missing eye contact. Both participants look at their screens, but because the web cam is next to the screen, video chat today is more like observing your friend while they are looking at their screen. Even the tiny cams very close to the screen on labtops don’t really help. The partner’s view still seams a bit offset. Do you think this is a serios problem or a minor problem?

“Here is looking at you, Kid.” is a low tech hardware work around for this minor problem, in my opinion, that Aram Bartholl came up with. The simple screen addon is made of a mirror, some glass with spy mirror foil and an piece of card board and will bring the full experience of eye contact to another. The video image of the partner is literally detatched from the screen by two mirrors and shifted in front of the integrated labtop cam. While the viewer enjoys the video image they are now looking at the same time exacly into the camera behind the spy mirror. In the field of TV industry, this setup is well known as a telepromter. I use to make things to solve problems I had myself when I had the time. Nowadays, society buys there way out of the problem. If you had the time to invent something of your own, what would it be?

Life of Henry Ford

Born in July 30, 1863, Henry Ford grew up on a family farm, which is today known as Dearborn, Michigan.  He spended days in a one-room school unlike todays 6 separate periods for classes.  I don’t know if you are given chores but he sure was, farm work to be exact, not that he liked it of course.  He took interest in mechanical things at an early age.  I became interested in drawing at an early enough age, taking classes that made me as good as I am today.

At the age of 16, Ford had to leave home to work as an apprentice machinist, for the nearby city of Detroit.  Today, we don’t have to leave our parents at such an early age to gain knowledge in something we like to do, although he did occasionally return to help on the farm.  Nowadays we use a much faster method of transportation thanks to him.  He originally supported himself & his wife by running a sawmill at about the age of 25.  He became an engineer with the Edison Illuminating Company in Detroit in 1891.  Where do you think you’ll be doing in your twenties?

After 2 unsuccessful attemts to esablish a company manufacture automobile, the Ford Motor Company was finally incorporated in 1903 with Henry Ford as vice-preident & chief engineer.  You can see he didn’t give up at one.  He didn’t even give up at two.  How many times would it take you until you gave up?  They weren’t machine made, they were man made with a total of 2 to 3 working on each car.  Image that!  It certainly didn’t make things any easier.

Henry Ford realized his dream of producing an automobile that was reasonably priced, reliable, & efficient.  Remind you of the post before this one.  Josh Silver pritty much had the same goal with his adjustable glasses.  When your still in school, you never know what will happen.  You can get a job that’s high in pay & dislike it, or a job with reasonable pay & love it.  In my opinion, only then can you make a difference.  Ford made a living out of something he loved & made the difference you see today.

Dependent upon what you like to do, how do you go about getting better at it?  As an artist, I go to art class, but I understand somethings don’t have classes.  It could be your state of mind, like helping others, competing, cooperation, etc…  Think about what your doing every day to better yourself.  Henry Ford got started as an apprentice & became an engineer with the Edison Illuminating Company in Detroit.  I started in an art class, outside of school just the same & now it’s  in school.  What are you doing to accomplish your dream(s)?

Low-Tech Invention 1/12

I’ve decided to post someting extra inbetween WRs to enspire readers to try do something on there own.

A Zulu man wearing adaptive eyeware

Many of these inventers had different backgrounds & were motivated to make something convenient for themselves, as well as others, out of something common where they lived.  If I had to think of something that would help me in my daily life, I wouldn’t come any where close to this one, even though I wear glasses my self.  Heres  Josh Silver’s adjustable glasses:

British inventor Josh Silver worked on eyeglasses that could be tuned by the wearer in 1985. His goal was to bring better vision to a billion people worldwide who cannot afford, or don’t have access to, an optometrist. But he does have to stop there, it could potentually replace regular glasses.  He devised a pair of glasses which rely on the principle that the fatter a lens the more powerful it becomes using two clear circular sacs filled with fluid inbetween tough plastic lenses.  Silver’s goal now is to distribute a billion pairs of his adaptive glasses to poor people by 2020 .  Already, 30,000 pairs have been given out in 15 countries.  His hope is to get the cost of making each pair down to a dollar each.

My glasses cost about $100 dollars every time I have to replace them.  Not to mention I loose them everynow & then.  This simple invention can help students in schools over all.  In my opinion, lets say you forget your textbook at home.  A teacher can give you a spair copy if they have it, right?  Now, imagine the same with glasses.  Otherwise, the student would have to move dependent upon where they sit.  This shows that Silver’s adjustable glass can help others in more ways than just giving it to those that are unable to get a pair themselves.  It can go to those that already have a pair as well.

I wish Josh Silver good-luck in accomplishing his goal.  Hopefully, word gets out about this helpful invention, the adjustable glasses.

10 Things We Should Say More

How many words do you speak each day?  For me, it’s very little, but most speak about 16,000 on average.  Yet, most of what’s said is meaningless, or as I use to say at some point in my life, pointless.  Mainly when it comes to angry arguements, it’s out of control and out of your hands.  It may be just someone’s pride taking hold of thier instincts with out a second thought.  There is a simpler and wizer way to use those words.

What I decided to do was have a week of silence, but that was too drast and worried many friends, family, as well as strangers that just so happen to pass by.  I was completely fine considering I didn’t get into any conflics, but I soon forgot how to just have a good time.  To this day, I find my self unable to laugh as hard as I use to.  I can always give a smile at least.  Now I know I could’ve taken smaller steps to a better life style.

Now that my backspace(past) is rewriten, here are 10 things we could all live with saying more often:

1. “Hello”: In my opinion, a great time to say this is to not just to a friend, but to someone you see on more than one occasion.  It might be on a bus, train, waiting room, or even a long line.  Just sitting or standing there isn’t going to brighten the atmosphere.

2. “Thank you”: In my opinion these 2 words can give both the speaker & the listener a better mood.  Though I am some what confused when a cashier says it when they give you your meal at a restaurant.  It’s because you bought it, right?

3. ”Please”: In my opinion, this word turns a demand into a request and makes people more willing to fulfilling it.  Just adding this word can do alot.  It’s sure better than being told to do it by a parent or being forced by the person your telling.

4. ”Here, have my seat”: In my opinion, offering a seat to someone less able to stand is reasonable enought to get up and say these exact words.  Just like that saying goes, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”.  Consider that you have been sitting longer than they have or you were going to get up shortlythat is when it comes to a bus.  Your not only getting up for there sake, but for your sake as well.  Of course, I’m just stating the obvious

5. ”This ones on me”: Well, this points toward couples or friends that go out.  Mainly, to buy lunch or dinner for the other.  I can’t say anything about this phrase for I don’t have a job, but I do have money.  So, I’ll just say allow family & friends to barrow money when they need if you don’t.  Sadly, it’s a problem I haven’t solve myself yet.

6. “Let me help you with that”: In my opinion, you should always help those in need, especially when your not busy.  It shows that your not lazy & that your not someone to sit there & watch as well as talking on the phone, listening to music, playing a portable game, etc…  Watch your surroundings & make your self useful.  Considering I’m a boy scout, I’d know.  I also know when everyones doing fine on their one.  It can also be put as a question, “Do you need any help with that?”  I case they look like they don’t need it, at least you took the time to ask.

7. “I don’t think we’ve met. I’m…”: In my opinion, this is a great way to invite someone into a conversation.  I’m sure it would make them more comfortable speaking to you if you started the conversation your name.  You may even become friends, but not giving a name indicates your just trying to pass time.  I depends on where & when you met, short period or long.

8. “What I’m really passionate about is…”: In my opinion this is when you want to get to know someone better.  You could tell them about yourself first or ask them to tell you about themself if you’ve already gained there trust.  This is past the point of small talk to trying to find a connection.  I guess it’s a way to make a friend you can talk to rather  than just play around.  In other words, someone who will listen to you.  I think I’m going to deep here.  I’m thinking about problems when it could be your success.  In my opinion, you should be able to talk about both.

9. “Have a great day”: In my opinion, great is more enthusiastic than good or nice.  I personally use great when ever I’m asked how I’m doing, so I know first hand.  I think this phrase is used often enought to tell you the truth.  It just needs the great, because I’m always left saying “you too” in the end.  I might as well start adding “thanks” to it now.  To think I’ve some how thought of the same idea as the writer of this aticle.  It’s true, I didn’t always say “you too”.  Anywho, say it before leaving anyone you talk to.  Just that phrase might’ve changed there day.  I even say good night at times no ones going to sleep yet.

10. “I love you”:  In my opinion, these words are the most important when it comes to family.  Some thing they not need to say it because they thing they already know, but sometimes they don’t.  Whether you show it or not isn’t always enough.  Hearing those words confirms it.

Anybody could do it once gotten use to.  I believe my mom is a perfect example.  I could even bring up a, “just the other day”,  if I wasn’t drifting from the topic.  At any rate, I could mention that she brought up a topic they had in common and still went their separate ways.  No need to make another friend, just a descent conversation.  Parents should constantly tell their child to use these phrases, as well as use them themselves just as my mom has.  These 10 things, out of all the meaningless chit-chat we use everyday, can make a big difference.

In this article’s comments, it had to other phrases that caught my eye:

1. “I’m Sorry”: An arguement can turn into a fight if a conclusion isn’t met.  This mostly starts when a misunderstanding isn’t discused and is instead taken to action.  Even if you weren’t the one who started it, saying sorry will set a good example to the one your telling.

2. ”I forgive you”: In my opinion, this should be said after sorry, simlpe because they might not say it again.  I’m most defenently not going into sarcasm when it comes to sorrymainly because I don’t use it on as often as most people.

What phrases do you think we should be saying more often? What would you say to bring a smile to someone’s face?
