Let Him Express Himself

Teenagers now-a-days express themselves through many different types of ways. One of the most popular being the way they dress. High school doesn’t have as many rules on dressing as middle school and elementary school have, allowing kids to dress even more as they please. But at North Cobb High in Georgia they decided that for one boy what he was wearing was “disruptive” and would not allow it.

Jonathan Escobar, a teen at North Cobb High likes to dress with wigs and high heels. Basically, rather than dressing like the boy that he technically is, he dresses like a girl. And in my opinion a pretty well dressed girl. Butttt… people who are what I like to call homophobic and insecure decided they didn’t like the way he dressed and had to go as far as starting a fight over it.

The school thought that the right thing to do was to tell Escobar that he had to dress more like a man or he couldn’t return to school. Escobar left the school because of his parents but now lives with his sister. The new school he chose to go to allowed him to wear what he wanted as long as it abided by the schools dress code.

Now I think the fact that Escobar’s formal school told him that he couldn’t dress like he did because it was “disruptive” is ridiculous, stupid, and unacceptable and annoys the hell out of me. If he wasn’t wearing anything raunchy or revealing or broke the school’s dress code he should be allowed to express himself however he wanted. The people who started a fight should be the ones kicked out of school for being close-minded and violent. And even if they weren’t kicked out, the way he dressed would have eventually blown over.

This entire incident tells people that it isn’t okay to express yourself and probably makes people even more insecure about their sexuality. I’m happy that Escobar speaks out and that the there are people who support him, like me. Don’t discriminate against anyone please, because (thank gosh it didn’t happen to Escobar) it can cause serious damage.
