Hello everyone, today was a short class period. We began the period discussing the 8% drop in our grades. Ms. Lahaise said that everyone got a zero in participation because we need to “earn it back”. After about 10 minutes of complaining, we watched a TED by Sherry Turkle about technology disconnecting people from the real world. It was actually really good because most of us have experienced what she was talking about. After watching the TED we wrote about it in our journal then discussed it until the end of the class period. Next scribe will be Logan.

Good evening one and all! I am SO SORRY! I don’t do Scribes very often, so whenever I am chosen for one, I usually forget! With that being said, sorry I didn’t post the most recent scribe until late… I WAS SEEING THE AVENGERS!! IT WAS THE BEST MOVIE EVER!! Anyway, let’s get into this scribe. The original day I was supposed to be scribe and forgot, we did nothing. Ms. Lahaise was absent and we had a sub… AN ENGLISH SUB! Who had a totally legit British accent. It was great to say the least! We just worked on our essays and the sub made a few people like Mahek read their rough drafts out loud.

Now for the next Friday, 5/4/12. We got into class and started a journal. The topic was: “No power is strong enough to be lasting if it labors under the weight of fear” – Cicero. After the journal, we read of course, and then switched seats. I am not in seat G1 so make sure to stop on by and say hello! When we were done switching seats, we conversed about the essays for a little bit and then got into new words. As Ms. Lahaise was bringing up the new words, the class talked about the journal… because I wanted too. We had a good discusion on the multiple interpretations of the quote and I believe I made some good points. SCORE 1 FOR ME! The topic then drifted into why teachers hate seniors. Ms. Lahaise said that it was because there is no fine line between child and adult. Teachers are used to having power over little kids so how do you aim that towards a teenager who is basically an adult, but also technically still a child? A little snippet was said about starting Dantes Inferno soon and then some of the class chose days in which to talk about fat paragraphs.

After that, Mahek went up and did hers. She read Catching Fire, the second book in the Hunger Games series and said that it was awesome and action packed. She talked about the relationship in the story between Katniss and Peeta (Bread) and also disclosed that there was a major twist. She also compared the book to the journal. After her, Tierra talked about her book, the Divorce Party. She didn’t like it that much and HATED the ending. In her defense, it did sound stupid and ambiguous as to what happens. Cesar then went up and talked about a book calld Germs which sounded like it was about the different horrors that governments use germs for… unspeakable things.

To wrap things up, thank you for reading! The essays got pushed back till Friday so that is awesome, and I hope you had a good time reading! The Scribe for next class will be Logan :) Thanks again :)

Class started with us (seniors) filling out an information sheet for Mrs. Young regarding college, as well as her announcing that she will be back to give each of us an envelope with our transcripts so we (the students) can actually mail them off to the colleges we will be attending, ourselfs. Anything dealing with “College” is important so do speak to Mrs. Young about all that jazz. Once Mrs. Young exited, Ms. Lahaise made it a point to explain the importance of work-continuance (I JUST MADE THAT WORD< UP :-D ) to us, since senioritis is threating to take over. "when you plan to leave your job for another you must inform your current job of this near future change, however, because your leaving  it doesnt mean you suddenly stop working where your at"- Ms. Lahaise. After that came new vocabulary definitions and testing, then we discussed the DONT'S OF OUR RESEARCH ESSAY.
1)DO NOT USE A CASUAL TONE FOR THIS REPORT, BECAUSE IT IS A REASERCH REPORT OUR AUDIENCE (MS. LAHIASE) WILL BE LOOKING TO RECIEVE HARD HITTING FACTS, NOT CASUAL CONVERSATION
2)DO NOT REFRENCE SOMEONE IN YOUR REPORT AND FORGET TO EXPLAIN WHAT TITLE  HE/SHE HOLDS. WE NEED TO KNOW WHO THAT PERSON IS AND WHY YOU ARE REFRENCING THEM (THEIR WORK/CREDIENTIAL TITLE WILL EXPLAIN THAT)
3)DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS IN THE BODY OF THE ESSAY, YOUR JOB IS TO INFORM
4)DO NOT REPEATEDLY WRITE "I", "MOST", OR "MANY" IN YOUR ESSAY.
once that was out the way our attention was turned to Bryan Stevenson, a lawyer who was given the opportunity to speak on TED. Some main points he hit on were *theres power in identity, a person can accomplish much by simply doing their job, but can accomplish much more when they're compassionate about it *our justice system is injust, people do not win cases based on innocence or guilt, but they do based on wealth and race. I did not like how he chose to run through topics the way he did, i felt like there was no structure to his speech. However, his life goal (challenge injustice) is great and the knowledge he's spreading to the world is even more beautiful.
Class ended with us sharing our thoughts on Bryan Stevenson.

    Evan is next scribe

So yesterday in class, sorry for the late scribe post, ms. lahaise opened up the class with a talk about the missing smart board devices. She said that she faintly knew which class the perpetrator
was in, but didn’t know how to solve it. Mahek M. then came up with the brilliant idea to assign each device to a chair location, making it easier to know which device has been lost. After this short conversation, we take a vocab test, and then do some book talk’s. I went first and talked about a book called “Hangman” by Faye Kellerman, Sheresh went next and talked about a book called “Saint Higgie” (might have misspelled it), and finally mahek talked about “The Hunger Games.” After this we had time to work on our rough drafts for our essays.
the next scribe is going to be evan

Hey guys! Ms. Lahaise sent us all an email this morning saying that she wouldn’t be at school today and that we should bring our devices to school on Friday so that we could work on our research reports. We had the lovely Mrs. Gold today as our substitute teacher. She collected our homework and explained to us what she thinks a good introduction is. “It should be hard-hitting and attention grabbing. Don’t make it all fancy and poetic.” Which was basically a reiteration of some of the bullets from the website on introductions. After her spiel, Mrs. Gold let us work on our papers, allowing some of us to go to the library for research. At the end of the period, she stated that if Ms. Lahaise just so happens to be absent again on Friday, and she just so happens to be our substitute again, she would like to see an outline of our paper. Other than that, we didn’t really do much else today. The next scribe is…….. Justin Kamkar :D

  • Tereza B. 4/17/12

Today was another typical Tuesday. As everyone was coming into class “ready” to take the Vocabulary Quiz, Justin was collecting field trips slips that Ms. Lahaise needed to sign. (These field trip slips were for the Senior Picnic, so if you were absent make sure to get permission and a signature from Ms. Lahaise ASAP. Remember the one week rule!)

There was however one thing different about this Tuesday, because it was the first time we were taking the Vocab Quiz with the Smartboard controls. They were already on all of the desks as we walked in, so as soon as the test was passed out, we got to work.

After we finished the quiz we had a journal topic to work on, “If you want truly to understand something, try to change it. -Kurt Lewin”. Once everyone was done with the test we took a few minutes to give feedback on what it was like using the controls and then proceeded to talk about the quote.

Mahek went to share first and expressed how much she disliked the quote because she didn’t quite understand it. She did however try to change it to make it work, but I guess that’s still pending. Muhammad also shared his dislike for the quote because he disagreed with it (which is perfectly fine). Evan shared what he thought the quote meant, saying something along the lines of “to change something we have to learn everything that has to do with what it is, all the components, which results in us learning”. I also agreed and shared how I thought of lemonade when I read the quote, because in order to make lemonade either more sour or more sweet, you first have to learn what lemonade is and what it is made of.

Toward the end of the discussion, Ms. Lahaise reminded us that these journal topics are meant for analyzation when being written about.

All in all, the period went by smoothly. There is homework due, so make sure to check the calendar!

The next scribe will be Nicole. :)

  • Ayesha Shaikh 04/13/11

Hello friends! This was one of the most important days to be in class. So let me tell you a little about how it went… We started off Friday the 13th by Ms. Lahaise collecting our essay proposals. She talked about how broad our subjects were and helped us (individually) narrow our choices down.
A lot of students had a lot of questions about how the format of the essay was going to be like, so we briefly talked about MLA and such, but we didn’t get too engrossed into the subject of formatting.
Ms. Lahaise also noted that when we click on our homework and there is a link we have to click more details for the page to take us to the document. It’s really important that you remember this !
After this, we wrote detailed descriptions of what our essay was going to revolve around. We also had to come up with a way to creatively present our essays (something that pertains to the subject of our essays like a short movie or an interview). This part took up the rest of the period. The next scribe will be Nicole !

Sorry I’m late, I’m trying to remember what happened since I don’t have my paper where I wrote what happened in class.

Today we watched a TED and then did the journal.
    -We finished getting the words.
-There were book presentations from Carol, Jamana, and Ayesha and they were all good.
-Carol talked about The Vampire Diaries and was pretty excited about it.
-Jamana’s book was A Touch of Greeks and stated it was both romance and comedy.
-Ayesha read Into the Wild, her presentation was good and entertaining, she got carried away.
-Many juniors came in because they are planning on taking Adv. Comp. next year, Ms. L told us to scare them, hahaha. I guess we sort of did, hopefully.
-Ms. Lahaise told us about our project and how it will be on the calendar. She said “IT HAS TO BE IN MLA FORMAT, IT HAS TO BE IN MLA FORMAT,IT HAS TO BE IN MLA FORMAT!” So we got that right? Oh and also we have to have in-text citation. After she said that we had a few minutes left so everyone just minded their own business.

Alright well the first TUESDAY back to school after having our last spring break before our longest yard to graduation we got a lot of things done.

First we all arrived to class after first period the usual, but then Ms. Lahaise decided to flip the class around and start off the class with journals instead of the vocabulary quiz. We had a good amount of time to write the our response to the quote, but then she passed out the little smart board controls since we’re her test subjects.

We took the test on the controls again and figured out a better method to taking the tests. She printed out the vocabulary and we just put in the letters we wanted to use. BOOM we were done.

We finished off the class with vocabulary but we didn’t get it all done so it will continue tomorrow.

    Then RING the bell rang.

…. Helloooooooooooo u guys (smiley face), I am your scribe for today.
The class was jump started with our vocal test that was originally scheduled for Tuesday of thus week, but since Ms. Lahaise wasn’t present Tuesday we took tge test today. So, if you were absent make sure to make that assignment up. After the vocab test tge class spent about 20-30minutes on silent reading. Then came our TED which starred Rob Reid today.
Rob is an copyright mathematician who pretty much gave our generation permission to download music illegally. He’s pretty humorous and sarcastic, my type of person. Most of the class… Well all of the class was confused about what his point was, but that’s okkay he’s not important anyway. I only mentioned him because he was the TED performer today,. In fact the commercial that was shown AFTER his TED was more interesting than he was. HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!! Anyways the TED was followed by the definitions to our new vocabulary words which in turn was followed by the class discussion. We discussed the TED^ and the ending of Siddhartha.
    Class Discussion Notes
-The main concept is everything and everyone are connected in the circle of life. Even with each of us being individuals, we all have a connection to eachother and history will continue to repeat itself between us.
-Wisdom cannot really be obtained through speech but mores through experience.
-Ultimately time doesnt exist, the past and future doesn’t matter, what matters is the present.
-The relationship between Govinda and Siddhartha will always be under analyzation and debate
-One thing that the class in general agreed on was that the end could’ve been better.
Seeing that today we finished Siddhartha it’s only right that Ms. Lahaise gives us an last huge assignment on it. Next Tuesday be sure to bring any electronic device you’ll need to work on the upcoming Siddhartha essay. It can be handwritten or typed, but I know most of us would prefer typed. SO, BRING YA GADGETS PEOPLE! If your a scholar, use this weekend to brainstorm for the essay (smiley face).
Last but not least, we ended the class with book advertisements (oral fatparagraphs) from shereesh and yocelyn.shereesh spoke to us about “the hunger games” and yocelyn discussed a book by the name of “sold” which is based on a true story. Both advertisements sounded pretty interesting so don’t hesitate to check them out.
    Next scribe will be Sandra.

I did this all on my iPod. Yay me!!

-the main concept of the book was, everything and everyone are connected in the circle of life. Even with

Today Ms. Lahaise was absent so we had a sub! It was also a shortened day so there really wasn’t much to do. We had to do a journal which was a quote by Winston Churchill – ” History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.” After that we had silent reading for the rest of the period. Tomorrow we have a vocab test I’m assuming. So study hard. :)
I will be tomorrow’s scribe because there wasn’t much to inform you guys about today!

Hi friends ! I am going to be doing the scribe post for Friday, March 16th. It was a real interesting class period this one ! Oh yes it was ! We started off by turning in our Lit Circle Roles for ‘Siddhartha’ (Chapter: OM). As our homework was being collected we started the journal (which was a quote) on the board. Instead of jumping into ‘Siddhartha’ or the journal topic, Ms. Lahaise asked each and every one of us what our passions in life are ! What a great question ! As everyone talked about what they loved doing and what interested them the most Ms. Lahaise made evident that our current passions won’t stay with us forever. As we grow old our passions will begin to change and we will lose them soon, which made me so incredibly sad… ANYWAYS ! After we talked about our passions Ms. Lahaise said that we are going to do more with this discussion, so she told us to please remember it. After that we jumped into ’Siddhartha’. We didn’t get into our groups however to discuss and what no which was very refreshing. After having our discussions of the book we realized that Terez and Carol didn’t have enough time to present their books ! So they’ll be doing that on Wednesday ! Hope you guys had an A+ weekend ! Remember, if you’re finishing up on your books for fat paragraphs don’t forget to sign up to present them ! We have to have two books finished and presented by the end of the semester ! Be responsible ! Love Always, Ayesha xxx

So to start off sorry I’m late posting this up. Wednesday went by pretty fast, the usual happened in the morning and Ms. Lahaise collected homework. We watched a TED by Mike Rowe the guy from Dirty Jobs, did a journal, and then silent reading. We talked about the TED for a while and Tierra said it was her favorite because he was interesting, funny, and she knows him. She also said she liked his humor and the connections he makes to people. Then Gevorg said that he got a different point of view, he thought that Rowe was trying to tell us that if you want to experience you have to do whatever it is you have to do. Ms. Lahaise then brought up our last discussion about how you have to do something you love or else you won’t be happy. Also that we do need those jobs such as plumbers, cable guys, etc., “Hollywood makes jobs look like a joke.” -Rowe She agrees with him because it’s true even as a society we don’t pay attention to those jobs/people. After other comments we got into groups for like fifteen minutes if not less and discussed about Siddhartha and the Son, whom we sort of stated is a D.B. Then we discussed it as a class and we all thought the son was spoiled and mean. Ms Lahaise said that it’s not entirely his fault because he has no lead, he just lost his mother and his father is just being nice and calm giving the son his way. Muhammad kept saying how we would’ve beat the son and others agreed with him. Ms. L then said that beating a child causes fear in them and that sometimes people just want to vent. Therefore the son isn’t 100% guilty since he didn’t have the structure he needed, Siddhartha didn’t give it to him. How is the kid suppose to know what’s right and what’s not if he isn’t being taught? Elliot said that the story is repeating itself because Siddhartha wants his son to reach nirvana just like Siddhartha’s father wanted that for Siddhartha. Last comments were that Siddhartha had desire when his son was there but lost it when the son left. Siddhartha has done the sixth step of the Eight-Fold Path which is Right Effort by putting effort in letting go of his son.

  • Evan J. 3/9/12

    Evan J. 3/9/12

GOOD EVENING EVERYONE! Alright, so let me start off this post
by talking about the annoying problems of life. First things first,
pardon the lateness of this Scribe Post. I was at school ALL DAY
waiting for the talent show and didn’t get back until about 10 or so
minutes ago. Anywho, one more thing I’d like to clear up is that I
can’t seem to get that fancy box above my post that has my name
and date, so I just typed it above. Now with all that cleared up,
let’s get into some good ol’ fashioned Scribe posting!

As the class began, many people were talking about the
homework. There had been some confusion on where
to turn it in, and for anyone who does not know, it is to
be turned in into the homework drop on this very site.
When Ms. Gold finally got our attention, she proceded
to explain our class assignment. The class work dubbed,
“one-pager” was a literary stew formulated by Ms. Lahaise
herself! Why don’t we get into what the assignment contsists of
    shall we?

Disclaimer! The assignment can be done in any order, what you
are about to read is just what I wrote down. The one-pager starts
out with you choosing a specifis theme or chapter from Siddhartha.
Once chosen, the assignment had us describe that theme or chapter
through various methods. One such method is visual. The assignment
asks for one  picture depicting the theme or a scene. The next item
on the list are quotes. Two quotes clearing showing an example of
the theme or chapter are required. Along with that, the one-pager
asks us for two thoughtful questions and two answeres to go with
those. Finally, the assignment is wrapped up with the personal
statement. Now in class, there was some confusion about this. What
I absorbed is that the personal statement is supposed to be your
reflection on the theme or chapter of your chose. There seems to
be little restriction on this. You simply need to get your point across.
Oh! And one thing I actually forgot. The one-pager is required to have
various words that create or reveal the theme of SIddhartha that you
    chose.

With all that being said, it was a slow period. Ms. Gold told us about
some guy who became rich from a hedge-fund. He partied all day,
erryday (<— gangsta spellage!) One day however, he woke up with
a massive hangover and HATED what he had become. This man
then went on sort of a spiritual quest and now has opened up a play
based on Siddhartha and the teachings on Buddah! Pretty cool right?
    Yeahhh!!

WELL that concludes today's Scribe Post. I do hope you enjoyed it
very much so. Once again, pardon the late-ness and what not. If this
Scribe is to short I would gladly do another one next class period, but
for now, the scribe next class period shall be… CESAR! Or anyone
who hasn't done one lately. (Only if Cesar has done one lately.)
    THANK YOU AND GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD NIGHT!

    -Evan, out!

  • Sheresh K. 3/7/12

Class started off with a journal topic followed by silent
reading and class discussion about Siddhartha.

Journal topic: “So go ahead and fall down, the world looks
    different from the ground.”- Crockett

    Siddhartha (condensed class discussion)

    By the river…..

Did Siddhartha hit rock bottom? One student stated that when
he had everything money could buy yet he hit rock bottom which was when he was
    contemplating suicide.

Govinda finally makes an entrance! One classmate thought
that is was funny how Govinda does not appreciate Siddhartha anymore and after
    hearing his story just leaves.

     “As a counter
argument one stated that Govinda may have wanted to meet Siddhartha at the end
of his journey not during the middle of it”.-Justin

     “Siddhartha is still
entrapped in the cycle of death and rebirth thus he has not reached nirvana”. -
    Ms. Lahaise

“One thing about his cycle is that each time he is reborn he
retains all the previous knowledge and tries to learn from them. Govinda on the
other hand has reached nirvana Siddhartha searched hard to find nirvana while Govinda
who was not interested found it.  Govinda
never sought out nirvana yet he was the one to reach it first”. – Ms. Lahaise

“Siddhartha acts like he is superior then everyone else”-
    Muhammad

“He is like the jerk in school” –Carol

“I don’t think he has reached the top of the pyramid yet
    because he is still arrogant”-Terez

“I think he is going to reunite with his son and that is
when he will reach the top of the pyramid”-Mahek

“If he was really reborn then he would not be arrogant”-
    Muhammad

“He still does not have love and belonging so he cannot move
up the pyramid. He still does not know how to feel” – Muhammad

“I think he needs to return home and seek out love so he can
finally move up the pyramid” – Terez

*****Essay question we might receive on the test*****

Compare Siddhartha’s life with Maslow’s hierarchy (the
    pyramid)

** Also make sure to check the calendar daily because a few
changes will be made regarding the homework!!!!!*****

The next scribe will be EVAN J

  • Tereza B. 3/2/12 add on

Sorry I forgot to mention that journals were also collected!

  • Tereza B. 4/2/12

Time just slipped away today, and class was over before I knew it.

We were originally going to start class with a journal using the Brainstorming Wheel but since Justin was gone taking pictures, and he’s the one who loves the the wheel, Ms. Lahaise decided to give us a quote instead. Originally Ms. Lahaise gave us a quote by Oscar Scott Card, “Sickness and healing are in every heart, death and deliverance in every hand.”, but there was some confusion as to what the quote was really saying, so we were given an alternative quote that we could respond to by Rene Decartes, “In order to improve the mind, we ought less to learn than to contemplate.”.

After finishing our journals we had silent reading until it was time to talk about the journals. Even though people had a hard time understanding the first quote, that’s the quote we had a great discussion on. Once we were asked about what we thought the quotes meant, Evan shared that he saw it literally and that the second part had to do with physically being able to give death or take it away. He read “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card and could make many connections between the quote and the book, but Ms. Lahaise pointed out that she didn’t see it as being physical, but that death could represent sadness (dying inside) and deliverance could be brought to you by a friend.

The discussion on the quotes slightly brought us to talk about Siddhartha but Ms. Lahaise did not want to get into it just yet.

Ms. Lahaise also brought up the idea of working on blog related material in class because she wants us to add more to our blogs and have more time to do them. Although we didn’t come to an exact conclusion, I’m sure she’ll be deciding something over the weekend.

We got new words, if you were absent or didn’t catch them all make sure to ask someone from class.

We were running out of time, so we skipped our lit circle groups, and started to discuss “Among the Child People” and “Samsura” from Siddhartha. Muhammad, Ayesha, Justin, Sheresh, and Tierra filled Ms. Lahaise in on their group discussion from last class period. Girls argued that Kamala did not really love Siddhartha but was infatuated with him, whereas the boys argued that Kamala is definitely in love with Siddhartha. We moved on to discuss the symbolism of the bird and the mango tree, and then Ms. Lahaise asked us why the author would make Kamala pregnant. Mahek shared with the class her prediction of what was going to happen later on in the book and because Ms. Lahaise kind of laughed at the prediction we’re all guessing Mahek’s right.

Ms. Lahaise gave us one final question, “Why do you think this book was so popular with young people in the sixties?” or the “hippy- dippy days”, and the bell rang as we took our turns answering the question.

Make sure to switch lit circle roles, everyone have a good weekend, and the next scribe will be Sheresh :)
