Ms. Lahaise was absent today and Mrs. Gold was our substitute. We didn’t have a journal, we right away got into our groups and started discussing Siddhartha. Mrs. Gold then gave us 8 question to answer about the book. At the end of the period, she collected the work.

    4. Explain pg. 71 ” He saw people going…”
    5. Pg. 72 paragraph 2. Explain why Sid thinks the things he is occupied with were merely a game?

    Today was a 2, 4, 6
    minimum day.

    At the beginning of
class, we did our normal last-minute review of the words right before the
vocabulary test. Since it was a short period, we had a very short silent
reading time. After silent reading, Justin presented his fat paragraph on a
book called Never Let Me Go. His description of the book was very vague because
he couldn’t give away too much of the plot. The book was about a girl who
reminisces on her high school experiences. She has a job that couldn’t be
stated to the class because it would spoil the book (Lahaise’s suggestion). The best
part of the book to Justin was the plot. The plot was an up and down roller
coaster. Just like the beginning of the roller coaster when the cars are slowly
going up the tracks, the book started off extremely boring. As soon as you get
to the peak, though, it takes off without hesitation.

    After Justin’s
presentation, the lit circle roles were collected and we watched a new kind of
TED called TEDyouth by a guy named Kevin Allocca (or Alloca). Kevin watches
YouTube videos for a living, and his speech was about how videos go viral and
how this new era of technology brings everyone around the world closer
together. We did a quick journal. Muhammad and Evan liked the video. As Evan
stated, he liked the video because for once it was a relatable topic and instead
of something heavy like human trafficking. Sandra and Sheresh disagreed,
saying that he “dumbed it down” too much and that it was about useless
information. Ms. Lahaise added that she saw the video as a relief “for 2
seconds we don’t have to think about something heavy.

    We didn’t do new words
today; we will do them on Friday.

    Ms. Lahaise has been noticing
in her other periods that many people have fails for not complete their blogs
and lit circles. She’s encouraging everyone to simply take care of business
because she doesn’t want to have to fail people.

    Journals will be
collected on Friday along with  the lit
    circle roles.

    Ms. Lahaise will not be
here next Friday due to Astro-Camp trip.

We will discuss the lit circle
roles we turned in today on Wednesday.

    Hi guys! 2/22/12
We took the vocab test today and we got new words!
We had some silent reading  time and then we had a journal on a TED we watched.
    http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/david_blaine_how_i_held_my_breath_for_17_min.html
Just copy and paste the link if you missed it.
After the journal we went in to our discussion on Siddhartha.
We talked about the chapters Gotama and the Awakening. We didn’t exactly go in a in depth discussion for the Awakening because of time!

So here are some key things in the discussion:

    - Evan asks if Govinda will come back?
Mrs. Lahaise said she didn’t want to give too much away and asked Evan, what he thought? He felt Govinda would come back and the class agreed. We felt he would come back to finish things with Siddhartha.

    - Siddhartha is not a follower
Govinda has left and Siddhratha is alone (this is a turning point in the novel)

** In Gotama Siddhartha is thinking for the first time of his life and how he wants to reach enlightenment
he feels that enlightenment can’t be taught it has to be experienced.

Ms. Lahaise pointed out that we can not forget that Siddhartha is our age.

-Govinda was not satisfied with Gotama’s teaching. He realizes that it is not what he wanted and his thirst for enlightenment was not quenched.

** Important thing to realize that Siddhartha and Gotama are different enitites in the book. Some people were a little confused since in real life Siddhartha is Buddha. We need to take this book as a fiction book and not the real way that Buddhism began.

*** Another important thing to realize is Nirvana is being able to understand ones emotions and not divulge in to them. For instance Gotama has reached Nirvana and he is not emotionless but is able to just understand his emotions and put them aside.

Through talking about Buddhism we talked about a Buddhist temple that is North Hollywood and how if anyone is super curious they can go there on Saturdays. Gevo went there and he said it was cool.:)

Just to be clear these notes are the super shorter version from my original notes so don’t rely on them too much:)

Took vocab test and got new words
Ms. Lahaise said that we don’t do the lit circles correctly
Ms. Lahaise told us we should be taking notes on class discussions
Scribe notes are your notes for the class
She will randomly start doing note checks
Ms. Lahaise gave us a lecture on how we should take notes:
    -key concepts(if teacher repeats something)
-write down something you didn’t know from a discussion
    -don’t write complete sentences
    -write stuff that is relevent
    -something you don’t understand
-something you want to further clarify/explore
-don’t forget the dates on the notes
    Second step to notes:
-go home and type up notes
-when retyping write in complete sentences
    Last step to notes:
-summarize notes at the very end
Notes started on 2/17/2012(Friday) and last two steps won’t be required until said by Ms. Lahaise
    New changes to Fat paragraphs:
    -won’t be written
-must stand in front of the class and sell the book
-you must make appointment AFTER finishing the book for a day to present the book
-Ms. Lahaise won’t chase you down to present YOU MUST BE RESPONSIBLE!
    -requirements two books min keep
Tereza gave a good point by saying that budda doesn’t care and has found peace even when Siddhartha challenged him
Muhamad said that buddha doesn’t have any emotions that’s why he is like that and doesn’t care about anything
Tierra gave a good point that people hide their emotions behind their ego and with no emotion at all they have left is their egos
After Tierra’s point Muhammad said Siddhartha’s desire for reaching his enlightment is stopping him from getting it and that buddha has complete control of his emotions

Class began today, and we noticed that a handful of people were not there, due to Pierce testing. So, because of this, Ms. Lahaise postponed the vocabulary test until this Friday. We had to do a journal. We wrote about the quote, “As I grow older, I pay less attention to what men say. I just watch what they do.” by Andrew Carnegie. After the journal, we had silent reading until 9:00. Ms. Lahaise printed out a new reading log, so for those of you who were not here today, you should go fill it up with what you’re currently reading. We all went into our Siddhartha literature circle groups and had a discussion about the chapter “With the Shramanas”. After that, we all sat back in our normal seats and talked about the chapter with the whole class. We talked about the book’s meaning of nirvana versus the modern day definition of the word. In the book, and in Siddhartha’s mind, nirvana is when you stop being reborn. Whereas, what the regular people of today say the meaning of nirvana is the feeling of complete bliss. In a sense, the two definitions coincide, because in the book, when you reach nirvana, it is when you die, and you stop going through that whole cycle of being reborn as something else, and having to suffer through existence all over again. The state of nirvana is when you finally reach the ultimate top of your life, and not having to keep going through the cycle of suffering again. We talked about how Siddhartha can control his mind very well, with the way he was able to leave his own physical self and go into the mind of a heron that died and was reborn into a jackal in the beginning of the chapter, and when Siddhartha was able to hypnotize the elder towards the end.  We talked about how Siddhartha left the Shramanas. He didn’t feel as though they were leading him to enlightenment. In the book, he said, “I suffer thirst… and on this long path of a shramana, my thirst has not grown any less.” (20) We argued that while the shramanas didn’t lead him directly to his goal, he still did learn something from them and was able to pass them as an obstacle in his journey. Jamana said that she didn’t think that the Shramanas were ever going to accomplish nirvana, because they won’t be able to disconnect from their own physical pain that they are going through. We talked about how Govinda plays as Siddhartha’s shadow or baggage, and that maybe, he would be his last obstacle in reaching enlightenment, because of the way he just follows Siddhartha around with whatever he does.

Important!!! For lit circle roles, we have to do five of whatever role we have for a chapter. If you are connector, make five connections. If you are discussion director, make up five questions and answer them. If you are illustrator, draw something, and write five things about it. For this Friday, we have to have read both Gotama and Awakening. For Gotama, do five questions, and for Awakening, do three.

The next scribe shall be Cesar.

The class started off with a journal topic(s) followed by silent reading, literature circles, and a “pop quiz”….
Journal topics (can choose either one): “self confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings”-Samuel Johnson “Is all that we see or seen but a dream within a dream? –Edgar A. Poe
Silent Reading: Everyone please don’t forget that you need to write down what book that you are going to be reading in class
After silent reading Ms. Lahaise asked everyone if they were reading something interesting
Most of the people did not like the books they were reading including myself but those who do like their books and recommend them are Evan, Mahek , and Justin. I am not quite sure what Evan is reading but I believe it is science fiction based. Mahek is reading a very interesting book called Next In The Wind which has a touch of anthropology in it. Justin is reading a psychological book c called Never Let Me Go and would recommend it.
After our literature circle discussion we took a pop quiz which featured the first noble truth
    WE HAD AN AMAZING DISCUSSION….
After the pop quiz Ms. Lahaise asked us what our answers were and we all came to the general consensus that since his life was sheltered he never experienced any real challenges and wanted to experience the real world. He suffered because he could not express his own opinions and was essentially told what to do every single day of his life.
*HINT HINT *the next pop quiz is going to be on the second noble truth
**** Reminder if anyone is going to pierce as a freshman you need to take the placement exam and you also need to register as a freshman even if you are already taking pierce classes. The placement exam for both English and Math is next week on Wednesday 2/15/12

We started the period off with taking the vocab test. We then watched a TED that starred Jill Bolte Taylor who studied the brain. She talked initially about how her brother suffered from a brain disorder and eventually went into the story about how she had a stroke. She explained it like a very pleasant experience where she managed to reach perfect happiness, nirvana. The way she was acting honestly made me feel like she got herself high before she went onto the stage. We had to write six word statement about this TED.

Ms. Lahaise then began to tell us about the book we would be reading, Siddhartha. She explained everything to us through notes and strictly informed me to NOT put this information in my post. She gave us our copy of the books and stated that we will be using the literature circles again. There were 5 groups of 3 which would consist of a Discussion Director, Connector, and Illustrator, and 1 group of 4, which I’m in, consisting of a Discussion Director, Connector, Illustrator, and Illuminator. This was pretty much everything for the day. The next scribe shall be Sheresh.

No scribe was needed today as Ms. Lahaise was dealing with grade snafus.

    Started off the period talking
about the fat paragraph assignment that is due Sunday. You don’t have to do a
work cited page for the book, just cite the book and the page numbers for the
    quotes. We didn’t have time to do a journal today. We talked about our blog posts;
if you didn’t put a link on the blog then you get 50% off. Ms. Lahaise said
that she’s just going to grade all of the blogs instead of having us turn in
two of them. She continued on saying that technically writing about a random
subject with no source isn’t following the rules. We should go onto the website
and read the instructions for the blog, carefully, and follow them. She said
for example, “If you want to talk about Mitt Romney, Google something like,
Mitt Romney Mormon, find an article about it, read it, and talk about it.” At
that point she continued on saying, “It’s essentially critical thinking about
what you’ve read. No matter what profession you’re in, you will need to know
how to write.” The lengths of the blogs are supposed to be at least a page. If
you don’t know if it looks like a page, copy and paste your blog into a Word
processor. Ms. Lahaise recommends writing the blog in Word processor to begin
with, that way you have an extra copy and you know how long it is. The blogs
aren’t just a summary of an article; you’re supposed to give your opinion, your
thoughts on the subject. It’s a reflection, an analysis, NOT a summary. We
later discussed what assignments were going to be on the report card. Our 20
week report card will consist of our scribe posts, vocabulary quizzes, journal
checks, class contribution, blogs, fat paragraphs, Count of Monte Cristo essays,
and maybe our autobiographies (MAYBE!). Also, if you got an A or a B on your
Count of Monte Cristo essay, you’ll be fine, but if you got a C or below, you
can fix it. Later, we got into our groups to finish our poem project, because
it was the last day we can work on it in class. We took a 5 minute break to
hear Ms. Lahaise read to us, “Horrible Questions”, which was a book about the
disgusting things people will do for a large amount of money. We then continued
working on our projects until the end of the period. Celebrity Tales project is
due Wednesday and don’t forget your blog is due Monday night. Also, as Ms.
Lahaise was grading our blogs within the class period it came to her attention
that a lot of students have done some or all of their blogs incorrectly, they haven’t
followed directions and are losing a lot of credit for it. If you have any
questions or concerns about your grade, please talk to Ms. Lahaise. Next scribe
    will be Ayesha.

Hola Amigos. Today, at the beginning of class i realized that i didn’t have my book so i went on a perilous quest to find it, which i did. When i got back to class i saw that we were in the middle of writing down the vocab words. So, i sat down and wrote down the words. If you don’t have the words go ask someone for them.
After the vocab words, we worked on the Cantebarry Tales. We did four people the Monk, Friar, Merchant and Clerk. We, as a class, decided that he was a “liberal monk” (mahek’s idea), who was shady because he had money (Tereza’s idea). We also agreed that he was a bad monk because he hunted and carried a sword around. Ms. Lahaise, brought up, the fact that swords were used to fight with, not hunt with, which means that the “Hunting Monk” was a actually a warrior monk. Chaucer didn’t like him.
The next person was the Friar who was a pimp because he gave pocket knives to girls. He was also only in it to win it, and was only in the places where he could attain some money  to pay for the many women that he had. Ms. Lahaise told us that Chaucer was a writer of the people, which means that the intentions he had were solely for the good of the people. Therefore, when he talked about all the Religous figures he talks about them in a bad way because that’s what they were like back then.
The Merchant was next and we decided that he was a poser and fake. He amassed a big debt, but hid that fact and loaned money out to the people that needed it. He isn’t a great guy to do buisness with.
The last person we did was the clerk. We talked about how he was a lazy philosopher because he didn’t want to get a job and that he paid for his books with his friends money. He didn’t pay it up, and instead just said thanks.
We then worked on our projects for the rest of the period. Nearing the end of the class Ms. Lahaise talked to us about how the projects are due next wensday, we have homework due on friday, and how we are reading Siddartha as our next book. If you want to buy the book make sure it is the same as our edition or else it will be harder to read.

Hey sorry for the late scribe post, but yesterday we had the usual tuesday. We first took the spelling test and then afterwards we had silent reading time. After silent reading time or during, i don’t remember, I asked Ms. Lahaise if we still had to comment on each other’s Fat Paragraph, and to my surpirse she said that we didn’t have to. If you still don’t know what a Fat Paragraph is then go under “INFO” and learn about.
After that we worked on our poem projects for the rest of the period.

Today’s class period passed by pretty quick, but we definitely accomplished a lot. As class began, Ms. Lahaise reminded us that we should already know what to do when we come in and shouldn’t wait for her instructions, so the class started off working on the journal topic that was on the board. Today’s topic was to answer the question, “How far would you “go” to support a position you believe in?”. After doing our journal assignment, we got straight to silent reading and afterwards we discussed some of the books people were reading in class.

The next talk in class was a result of a failed scribe post from a different class period. Ms. Lahaise then asked the class what should be included in a scribe and what a good format would be, so make sure you look at her latest post.

Now onto some very important information about The Canterbury Tales. We read a bit more of the prologue as Ms. Lahaise re-explained direct and indirect characterization. As a class we had a very good discussion about the characters we read about and Chaucer’s intentions and feelings towards the characters.

Then she went on to explain our project that goes along with the reading, which is that we must write ten lines of a poem on 7 different celebrities (70 lines in total) in either groups of two or by ourselves. However, we should also make sure to give the 70 lines of celebrity descriptions an intro, just as Chaucer does in the prologue. The poem must rhyme and when writing you should keep it classy and clever, keeping direct and indirect characterization in mind. Most of us got in pairs because Ms. Lahaise gave us the remainder of the time to brainstorm and plan ahead.

Altogether, a very successful class period, and the next scribe will be Ayesha. :)

oh my gawd guys im so sorry! okay well yesterday we were greeted my the wonderful Ms. Lahaise. We all turned in our autobiography whether it was turned in via email or in the box in the class. Class started with Ms lahiase telling us that we have a vocab test! We all needed time to study but it wasn’t really given to us, so we took the vocab test. once we finished our tests we had silent reading for about 10 minutes then we went on to our daily TED. This TED was about three teenage girls who won the google scinece fair. They each had a presentation that dealt with some form of research. We then had a discussion about our feelings on the TED the opinions varied but they were either i liked all three or just one, or we disliked one of them. we got new words and there is a vocab text next week. we were given two worksheets that go along with the Canterbury Tales. Bring the worksheets in every class period along with your books. DONT FORGET TO BRING YOUR BOOKS BECAUSE IF THEY ARE IN YOUR LOCKER YOU CANT GO GET THEM!! that is all that happened in class yesterday! again im so sorry for being late :/
OH SNAP! okay also just a reminder if you dont post who the next scribe is you lose 50% of your scribe grade
with that being said the next scribe is tereza <3

Bring the worksheets in every class period along with your books. DONT FORGET TO BRING YOUR BOOKS BECAUSE IF THEY ARE IN YOUR LOCKER YOU CANT GO GET THEM!! that is all that happened in class yesterday! again im so sorry for being late :/
OH SNAP! okay also just a reminder if you dont post who the next scribe is you lose 50% of your scribe grade
with that being said the next scribe is tereza <3

HI EVERYONE!!! sorry for the late scribe post and I hope you can forgive me. so lets start this off shall we? The started off with us going into class and I could automatically tell that Ms.Lahaise was not in a happy mood due the fact that she was tired and exhausted. We started the class off by watching a TED by Brian Skerry. For those of you who don’t know or don’t remember this ted from last year, it was about the sea photographer who talks about the serious issues we face today with oceanic wildlife. I personally really enjoyed the TED because he made his point clear and straightforward. he made an interesting point about how people take from the sea expecting no serious consequences. this is again due to the mindset that says “one more won’t hurt” . this is a very dangerous way of looking at things because if we keep thinking that way, it is only a matter of time before we run out of resources which will eventually cause a very big change in our lives and things will take a very negative turn. it is up to us to change our mindset to something more along the lines of “we need to stop abusing nature now!” rather than something like ” ehh….we’ll get back to it later…” because until we change our way of thinking, this whole world will suffer in the future but like most things that exceed the point of repair, it will be too late to do anything. I especially liked that he wasn’t saying that we should stop fishing altogether but rather that we should fish in moderation so we can give nature a chance to regroup and reload in a sense. Some people said that the fisherman need to fish a lot because it’s their means of living so what can we do? Ms.Lahaise being the super smart and amazing person that she is suggested that they could make a law where they were only allowed to hunt a specific type of fish for a specific period of time because that way we don’t short out our supply for one specific type of fish but rather give it a chance to recover for the future. If you do not watch this TED for the information he is giving out then simply watch it for the pictures that he puts up because as we all know, a picture is worth a thousand words. The link for the TED is right here: http://www.ted.com/talks/brian_skerry_reveals_ocean_s_glory_and_horror.html

The next scribe will be Destinee =DDD oh and i love Ms.Lahaise =)

Hello there friends ! I’ll be doing the scribe post for December 2nd ! Olrighty then… Class started off with Mrs. Aldrich (from the counseling office) coming in to talk about college classes at Pierce next semester. If you are planning to take a college class next semester, it is advised that you see one of your counselor and discuss which classes you plan to be taking. She handed out half sheets of paper which basically asked if you were interested in talking a college class, and if so which one. It was kind of like a request form.
Anywho ! After that whole shenanigans was over we discussed our Autobiography assignment !!! We went through page by page and discussed the topics and questions asked and brought up in the packet we had to print out and bring to class. Ms. Lahaise let the entire class know that she would except students to bring in their laptops to class to work on their Autobiography project. She also made us aware that she will be checking every so often to see we have finished and completed a total of FIVE assignments ! There is acctually an ‘Autobiography check’ coming up this week so better have you information together !!!
After we were done discussing the Autobiography assignment, Ms. Lahaise let us start working individually on the project. A few people brought in their laptops and were much on task the remaining of the class period. *Note: Ms. Lahaise will be giving us a lot of time in class (almost all the time we meet) to be working on these exciting projects ! Please come to class prepared with lots of needed information, tools, and materials !
Hope all of you had an amazing weekend ! Remember, tomarrow (Monday, December 5th) is a 1-6 day with a 3:03 dismissal. This schedule is due to club pictures ! xxx

Hello, seniors! Today was just like any other regularly short Tuesday. We came into class, sat down, had a couple minutes to study for our vocabulary test, and took the test. Jamana was the first to finish her quiz. When asked how she finished so quickly, she stated that she wasn’t going to sit there with her test, acting like she knew where any of the words went, when she didn’t study. That’s honesty right there. Good for you, Jamana. After finishing the quiz, we had a journal to do: “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it’s time to pause and reflect.” We didn’t really have the time to have a discussion, so after writing about the journal topic/quote, we all changed seats. Someone (I forgot who, sorry!) yelled out, “All the brown people are still together!” and people started to laugh. Ms. Lahaise made a South Park reference in a joke saying that one of the students was like Token (a bazillion cool points to her), but no one really understood until Evan finally pointed out that it was South Park related. After the whole new seat arrangement, Ms. Lahaise gave us the new vocabulary words and told us about bringing our autobiography instructions (found in the email she sent out) to class tomorrow. The autobiography will be due before winter break, hopefully. We will all have time during most class periods to work on them. Ms. Lahaise is also allowing us to bring our laptops. She is letting us keep them locked up in the cabinets, for safety, if you are intending to leave them in class. The autobiographies are also going to be what your 2nd fat paragraphs are about, but we’ll get more into what we will be doing with the autobiographies in class tomorrow morning. Other than that, that’s pretty much all that happened in class today. The next scribe is Mahek!

    11/18/11 scribe post.

last Friday at the beginning of class we all joined our lit circle groups and discussed what we thought of the end of “The Count of Monte Cristo”. Which was a pretty interesting conversation for my group if you ask me. After about 20 or so minutes of Monte Cristo talk, Ms. Lahaise spoke to the class about the requirements for our essay assignment, which is due next Tuesday. NOW, there is lots of important requirements regarding this essay! so if you were absent it’s a must that you see Ms. Lahaise and find out what you need to know. If you were present during class, you already know the deal. We spent about a hour on the essay topic I believe and then after that returned to “The Count of Monte Cristo”. This time it was a full class discussion though, not a lit circle type thing. The last discussion about the Count was definitely interesting and diverse. We all agreed on plenty of things regarding the count. Yet, we all disagreed on just as much. Ooh another important thing, since I’m the last person out of the whole class to do scribe (meaning EVERYONE except me has done it already lol), I think it’s only right that we start the rotation all the way over. It look’s as though Nicole was the first scribe for this year of Honors Advanced Comp, which means I’m picking her again to start the rotation over. so the next scribe will be Nicole.

Today we walked into class begging Ms. Lahaise for a couple minutes to studying our vocabulary words as she prints out our tests. She then handed out the tests and instructed us to begin silent reading after we finished. When all the test were collected, she put up new words for us to copy. Ms.Lahaise also stated that she sent everyone a email of chapter 113, some students could see the highlighted parts and others couldn’t.
We then watched a TED by Marco Tempest, about his favorite subject “deception”, followed by a journal like usual. Everyone seemed to enjoy watching this TED talk and as a class we had a discussion about it for approximately 25 minutes. There were many different responses to this TED, some stated that lying is the right thing to do at times and others believed lying is never the answer and you should always tell the truth. Muhammed made an excellent point that “sometimes you have to lie to save yourself, from confrontation or consequences.” On the other hand, Ayesha stated that she believes “lying is a terrible thing to do and if you lie you should get punished!” Sandra explained that she thinks “lying is essential in everyones life, and if you don’t lie that will cause you to become depressed.” After everyone got a chance to share their thoughts, Ms. Lahaise asked the class “who thinks they can go a day without lieing?!” only a few people rose their hands. Justin then brought up another topic pertaining to the TED about “false hope.” Tierra responded to his point with a great example that if “a student has a F in the class giving them false hope would be telling them that they could still earn an A” which is darn near impossible. Ms.Lahaise ended the discussion about the TED and called for homework, which was our lit circle roles. We then got into our lit circle groups and was given 10 minutes to discuss our assigned reading which was chapters 104 thru 112. For the rest of class period we discussed what has recently took place in the reading and many great points were made. Muhammed stated that he “felt Villefort has suffered too much, now that his wife and step son our died and he put his only son up for trail.” Ms. Lahaise expressed that Villefort’s character has been the same throughout the whole book and the Count has changed dramatically towards the end of the book. Justin connected Villefort to “a spoiled kid” because he has to get what he wants, the way he wants or he will start conflict until it happens. Justin also stated that he “has been reading and reading waiting for the story to have a dramatic turning point and its taking too long for this to happen, which made him angry.” On Friday, we are suppose to have completed reading the rest of the Count of Monte Cristo and turn in our last lit circle roles. :(
The next scribe is…Jamana! I think she’s the only one that hasn’t been scribe yet.

    Hey guys!
It is 11/15/11 today and it was a shortened day! Even though we only had a short period we went over many things today. Before we started the class Mrs. Young came in to tell us that Monday at 9.00am there is a Speaker from UCLA coming for a personal statement workshop. So if any of you are having issues with your personal statement it might be a good idea to go and check that out!

Today many people were turning in their permission slips for the econ summit that is coming up. After getting many slips, Mrs. Lahaise asked “Who was going to be in class the day of the summit?” Only two people raised their hand! Then jokingly Mrs. Lahaise said she was going to bring her pumpkin pie that day! Emphasis on the joking part! Don’t worry guys we will get our pumpkin pie, well at least I think she was joking. O.o

We started talking about Romanticism. The Count of Monte Cristo is a Romantic novel and one of our essay topics is about Romanticism. Romantic novels don’t mean they are about love and kisses which is what might come to mind when we hear the word Romantic. Romanticism is about nature and emotions. Romantic novels are about emotions over intellect and they usually have a strong emotional hero and many characters with inner struggles. For instance Villefort is one of the characters in the novel with an inner struggle. The Count also is a character with many inner struggles. Romanticism has a lot to do with mystery and imagination, the Chateu Di Iff is an example of a dark mysterious place that is an example of Romanticism in the novel.

Van Goh and many artists of his time were impressionists. Impressionism is not only a painting style but it relates to an impressionist time period for artists. Just like Impressionism is an era of painting Romanticism is also an era. Romanticism relates to an era where many writers wrote in a Romantic style. With Mrs. Gold we read some of Emerson and Thoreau. Emerson and Thoreau were both transcendentalists. Transcendentalism is the same thing as Romanticism.

Once we started grasping what Romanticism was we start asking about books we have read that we thought might be Romanticism. The Great Gatsby, Heart of Darkness, and A Separate Peace are not Romantic books. I was surprised by the fact that the Separate Peace was not a Romantic novel because many of the characters deal with inner struggles and then Mrs. Lahaise explained that for a novel to be a romantic novel it needs to have many elements of romanticism. A Romantic Novel has these elements; emotional hero, nature, inner struggles mystery, and passion. This was the end of our lesson on Romanticism. If you are still confused about what Romanticism is check your emails. Mrs. Lahaise sent an email about what Romanticism is which will be really helpful especially because I wasn’t able to explain it that well on the scribe since everyone was talking so fast during class! Sorry! So make sure you check your emails.

After Romanticism we had a lesson on Essay writing. We talked about how it is important to start off your essay in an interesting way. The best way to start off an essay is in a question.
Here is an example if the topic of the essay was Romanticism:
What is your idea of a Romantic Novel? You may think a Romantic novel is about hearts and kisses, no it is not…

^^^ That is a good way to start off an essay!

When writing an essay especially one that is a response to literature it is not good to write in first person. So if you can’t help it, write the essay like you normally do, then just go and delete all the sentences starting with the letter I.
Writing in first person is acceptable sometimes like when writing your blogs. So go crazy with the first person in your blogs

Tereza felt that the example of the essay being started off with the question was kinda cheesy and she heard that some teachers don’t like that. Mrs. Lahaise felt that most teachers would like the essay starting off with a question but she also said that you have to write to your teacher. If you feel like your teacher will not like a cheesy start to an essay than don’t write your essay like that. It all comes back to audience and purpose. Keep those things in mind while writing.

A question is a good way to start off you essay but it is not the only way. Four other ways that are good way to start off an essay are a quote, anecdote, shocking statement, or a definition. If you are going to start off with a quote then make sure your quite is by a prestigious person. You can’t do a quote by Justin or Shereesh even if they are awes some!J

Here is an example of starting off an essay with a shocking statement:
    Topic: Smoking
This year alone five million people died from smoking.

^^ This is untrue, it is just an example!
An anecdote is a short story. A short story is a good way to start off S.A.T essays or personal statements but it might not be the best way for a response to literature! The last way to start off an essay is by a definition but this is the least desirable way and is probably only good for science classes.

Once we finished covering ways to start off an essay we started to talk about thesis statements. The best way to start off a thesis statement is by taking your topic and turning in to a question. Once you have made it in to a question, answer your question and that answer will be your thesis.

Ex. Topic: Describe the world around you.
Questions: What is the world I come from?
    Answer/thesis: My world consists of ___, ____, and ____.

Once you have a way to start off your essay and a thesis statement its time to start writing. Don’t forget our essays are due November 23, 2011! Even though only our first draft is due that day it still needs to be like the final draft. It is suppose to be 1,500 words and anything less won’t count. 1,500 words is the minimum so for a good grade you are probably going to need more than that, but at the end of the day it is about quality not quantity. Writing 1,500 shouldn’t be too hard because Mrs. Lahaise was brainstorming ideas and she can write an eleven-paragraph essay for the Count of Monte Cristo. She said its not difficult to do because you are suppose to connect the book to other sources.
Here is an example of a break down of how she got eleven paragraphs:
    Ex. Romanticism
Paragraph topics for the Romanticism essay:
    Intro
    Conclusion
    Count
    What Romanticism is
What elements make it a Romantic novel
    Outside Sources.

^^ These are a few paragraphs for the Romanticism topic if Mrs. Lahaise was writing the essay. So don’t worry about the word count and tomorrow we are going to continue our writing lesson. At this point the fire alarm rang.

Welcome to the Advanced Comp. second period recap! On today’s agenda there was the vocabulary test, journal, some silent reading, lit circle discussion, and then the switching of roles. A few minutes after class started, as everyone crammed to go over the vocabulary words just one last time before the test, Ms. Lahaise asked if everyone was ready. Disregarding those who were saying, “no”, Ms. Lahaise passed out the tests and everyone got to it. (I hope all of you remembered to put the test ID on your papers.)

After we finished the vocabulary test, we were supposed to continue on as usual and get started on the journal.

The topic for today was: “Love is consistent. Hate is random.” (Proverb)

After we finished the test and our journal, there was a period of silent reading, as usual. When everyone was finished and we had had our time to read, Ms. Lahaise collected the homework, and seconds later decided that she would also be collecting journals. (Yes, there was excitement could definitely be sensed in the air, as you can imagine.) HOWEVER, Ms. Lahaise said that if we didn’t have our journals ready today, that we could turn them into her tomorrow morning! (So if you didn’t turn them in today, get to it!) The number of journals that you should have is at least nine. (I think during this time, Justin and Muhammad were also discussing how they were “toady” students. I wonder who won that discussion.)
Following the turning in of homework, we separated into our lit circle roles and started to discuss what we had read and what we had come up with in our roles. Before we got into the class discussion, we made sure to switch roles. During the class discussions, Ms. Lahaise said that we should also discuss Chapters 93- 98, which I was so excited about because I had caught up that far and I would be able to participate. I talked about how I connected what had happened in those chapters to “The Vampire Diaries” and “Pride and Prejudice”. (Yes, even though Ms. Lahaise doesn’t like Jane Austen.) We discussed different themes that could work for the book, such as karma. You know, “what goes around, comes around”. (If you haven’t heard the saying before, just listen to the Justin Timberlake song.) We also discussed how it was so obvious that Eugenie was a lesbian, well some of us were a bit shocked. Mahek also shared her connection, which Ms. Lahaise said was more of a metaphor, between The Count of Monte Cristo and a storm. (That was a good one Mahek. Nice!) As our class discussion was coming to an end, Ms. Lahaise reminded us to go on her website and look at the Count’s essay prompts which is on the calendar because the first draft is due in two weeks!
As usual, we were running out of time, and we still had to be given new words. Tick-tick- tick went the clock, and we ran out of time. We will finish getting new words on Tuesday, but if you were absent today, make sure you study those vocab words so that you can make up your test Tuesday at nutrition. ;)

Tomorrow is a 1-3-5 day, no school Friday, so see you all again in class on Tuesday! :)
The next scribe will be my good buddy Mahek! :)

Hello! Hello! I don’t think I can top Evan’s super-awesome-dual scribe- scribe post, but I can sure as heck try right?! Anyways, I also will be doing a dual scribe as Evan so here I go!
On Friday, November 4th 2011, we had Mr. Pugh as a sub because Ms. Lahaise had an ear infection :( . The journal was written on the board, so we quietly worked on that and after the journal we talked lightly of The Count of Monte Cristo.
Today, we started off class by watching a TED (the one of Eve Ensler) and wrote about it on our journal. After that we got our new vocabulary words and definitions down then had about six minutes to talk about the TED we previously saw in the beginning of the period. Then the next few minutes before class ended, we had a lovely conversation about The Count of Monte Cristo! We talked about vengeance and Pulp Fiction, it was soooo great.

HELLO, MY BABIES, HELLO, MY DARLINGS, HELLO, MY RAGTIME GALS! Anyways, on a serious note… well, sort of serious (operative word: “sorta”) . Hello class! I am Evan T. Johnson here with YOUR daily scribe! But get this… this is the first… get ready… DUAL SCRIBE! That’s right, a scribe post that consists of a whopping TWO class periods! So without further ado, let’s get started!

On Tuesday, November 1st 2011, most of us shuffled into class in an unenthusiastic manner. Justin Kamkar alerted me to the fact that I would be scribe. Intrigued, I asked Ms. Lahaise if I should just wait till Wednesday to do the scribe, seeing as how Tuesdays are so darn short! We came to the conclusion that I would do both days. Hence, this super awesome DOUBLE SCRIBE POST! Continuing: A few people brought up the point that they were having trouble accessing their grades. As it turned out, Ms. Lahaise hadn’t paid the website so the service was shut down temporarily. She then assured us that everything was paid in full and the service returned. Next we dove into a TED Talk. The speaker was Aimee Mullins, who as it turns out, is famous for not only having one crazy-spelled variant of the name “Amy” but for just being downright extraordinary as well! This, in my opinion, was a nice change because Mullins’ talk was far less depressing than the most recent TEDs we’ve watched. After that, there was not enough time to do a journal so we were told to do it for homework. Before the class concluded, Ms. Lahaise lectured about writing. It was pretty interesting and put many things into perspective. The things she talked about were purpose, audience, and format. She explained that you wouldn’t write something to her in the fashion you would write to a friend. An example she gave was that our blogs are addressed to the world, while essays should be more formal because they she is our audience. Another point she made was that things have a specific format. Again, a blog format would differ from an essay format.

Now let’s get to today. We walked in as same as usual and sat down and whatnot. A comedic scene unfolded where Sandra and Mahek arrived late. Their excuse was that they had Mr. Noguchi for homeroom. Ms. Lahaise didn’t buy the excuse (because it wasn’t really one) and Sandra caused silly banter with Mahek. After that, I caused a stir and I can’t quite remember what it was about. I think it had to do with Facebooks and emails. Things like that. Anyway, when things settled down, the class began a vocab quiz. And as always, THAT was interesting! After that, we jumped into a journal. The first quote journal in a while actually and an interesting one at that. “At what point is loyalty too much to ask?” If you didn’t like the quote, a free write was acceptable. Naturally, when finished with the journal, silent reading started. At the end of silent reading, Ms. Lahaise called upon the class to talk about the journal. Barely anyone talked but Logan and Tereza spoke their minds. When all of that was dealt with, the class spit up into their literature circles to talk about none other than the Count of Monte Cristo. In that time, Ms. Lahaise collected our work and Sandra and I got 1/2 credit! Can you believe that? All because gosh darn Muhammad had to go above and beyond the call of duty and do what was expected! Darn you Muhammad. So for the rest of the class we pretty much just talked about the Count. Some good points were made. We talked about chapter 84. Ms. Lahaise revealed that her favorite line was when Caderousse died and the Count simply says “one”. So like I said, good points were made. Also, one odd one! Tereza compared the Count to Hannable Lector! How strange is that? So to wrap things up, Gevorg is no longer allowed to talk. Mainly because he just spoils everything. Ms. Lahaise also stated that she liked my hyperboles! SCORE! Also, one last side note, if anybody is a Connector for Friday, make sure to do a great job! Ms. Lahaise said she would focus on them a lot.

So, I hope you enjoyed this DOUBLE SCRIBE POST! I had a lot o’ fun writing it! The scribe for Friday will be the one and only and wonderful Ayesha Shaikh. I love you all! Goodnight, and have a wonderful evening!

  • destineem

guys im soooo sorry for this late scrobe post! okay well on wednesday we walked into class begging Ms. Lahaise if we could study for 10 minutes ,but she shut us down and said we were going to watch a TED.Little did we know that technology wasnt going to be Ms. Lahaise’s friend, so we took our vocab test. The TED we watched was about terrorism and how children are being froced into it. After watching the TED we did our journal and proceeded into silent reading. After silent reading we went into a group discussion about the TED. I was unanimous that everyone hated what was going on in Pakistan, but there wasnt really anything we could do except raise awarness. We all realized that we can’t change a country that has been this way for centuries. We had this discussion for majority of the period and then we realized that class was almost over so Ms. Lahaise gave us our new vocabulary words. DON’T FORGET TO READ AND DO YOUR LIT CIRCLE ROLES! :) the next scribe was sonali

    Friday October 28, 2011.
So we all walked into class and sat in our seats as usual, but today’s class was not like any normal day. We had no journal and no silent reading! Ms. Lahaise told us to get into our literature circle groups and start working. A few people asked for a TED, but Ms. Lahaise said no TED today because we really need to work on The Count. We got into our groups and Ms. Lahaise said we had ten minutes for our discussion, we asked for more time so she gave us eleven minutes, lovely right? However as we worked she said she would give us until 9:15 and we had to finish our body biographies as well. We all got to talking about the movies because Gevorg brought up how he saw one version with a Zorro type character. Awkward… Anyways, Muhammad told Ms. Lahaise to make her own version when she commented on how all the other versions are bizarre. She then mentioned how first period wants to make a movie in second semester, Muhammad then protested that our period should make it since we’re “better” but Ms. Lahaise said we do not have enough people. She ended up giving us a lot of extra time to do the body biographies, then we all presented them.
    Presentations:
    1) Sandra, Jamana, and Muhammad —> Abbe Faria
They drew him as a very skinny and unhealthy person because they felt that being in prison that long would make him look like that.
They thought he was the most important character because without him Dantes would never have become The Count, and there would be only half a story.
    2) Teresa and Cesar’s —> Luigi Vampa
They said that he went from being a shepherd boy to being the biggest bandit.
Their character had a mask drawn on his eyes to symbolize how he was sneaky and deceiving.
They also said that even though he had negative characteristics he also had good ones. He was loyal to the girl he loved and he was noble because the first time he met The Count he showed him which route to take but did not take any payment in return. He is also true to his word because he does not refuse anything The Count asks him to do.
    3) Nicole, Sheresh, and Gevorg —> Madame de Villefort
They drew her with devil horns holding money and poison. She was also wearing green to symbolize her greed.
They said she has both good and bad characteristics because she cares a lot for Edward but at the same time is trying to frame Valentine for being the one behind the poison incidents.
    4) Logan, Destinee, Tierra, and Karine —> Mercedes
They drew her as a really cute and innocent looking girl. They talked about her love and devotion for Dantes by using a quote that she says to Fernand when he is trying to get her to marry him.
    5) Mahek, Ayesha, Evan, and Me —> Albert de Morcerf
We talked about the different characteristics of Albert and his love for women(the carnival at Rome), his mother(he would rather upset his father then hurt his mother by not marrying Eugenie), and his father(he is ready to duel Beauchamp immediately because he refused to retract the ill word against Fernand). We also talked about his infatuation with The Count and how impressed he is by everything that The Count does.
The we had a class discussion about the book. Ms. Lahaise asked us who we thought was the most important character. Some people said Abbe Faria, Tierra said that Villefort, Danglars, and Fernand are equally important, Sheresh says it is Madame de Villefort, but remember there is no right or wrong answer. Mahek then talked about how some of the characters are being used as collateral damage by The Count, because he is hurting innocent people in the process of his revenge. We also talked about Caderousse and why he was brought back into the story and how Andrea/Benedetto wants him gone. We also talked about how the story changes again and again, and never really stays consistent but is still very intriguing. This got us to talk about Mr. Nomachi and how he says that every book is the Odyssey, Ms. Lahaise explained this is because every book is a journey and it is about finding yourself. Evan disagreed because he does not like when people say that books are the same because every book has it’s own story. Teresa then said that she understood what Evan was staying but she still thinks that a lot of stories are the same just with a different backdrop. Jamana then asked why most writers in that time did not get famous until after they died and no on really knew, but Teresa thinks it is because no one really analyzed the books back then, which makes sense. We then switched roles for the literature circle and have to read to chapter 83 by Wednesday. Please do not read ahead unless you are extremely good at keeping it to yourself.

The next scribe will be Evan!! (:

  • karinea

Today was a really chill day because Ms. Lahaise was absent. Guess who the substitute was! Mrs. Gold! Mrs. Gold started off the class talking about how Ms. Lahaise taught the Count of Monte Cristo lesson differently last year, they wrote analyses on each chapter. She then talked about our college applications and how we should get them done soon rather than later. She continued,” When you write your application, even though you don’t know what you want to be, Make believe you do.” Mrs. Gold then said that one of her old students had wanted to become a music producer and his parents didn’t want him to because they didn’t think he could get a job and Mrs. Gold gave him advice, she said to do what you want because if you want it enough, you’ll succeed. Mrs. Gold has double majors in Art History and a double major in education. It’s easier to get jobs with double majors, also with both PHD and MD. She said to make an appointment with the head of the major you want, at the school you want and talk to them, see what you can do. She concluded the class by saying, “College is the best time ever. Now do something, do a freewrite on the book, I’m going to leave Ms. Lahaise a letter about this.” All we had time to do was our journal.

Hey this is Gevo with you daily scribe so today was a really intense day. As class began Ms. Lahaise was going to show us an interesting Ted. She showed us the Ted about the Human Trafficing and how women are being abused. After we watched the Ted we started to do silent reading. Now after silent reading now the interesting part came. For one whole hour we discussed this journal topic and for everyone it was very emotional. The basic responses for all the guys in the class were that the people should just die and burn in hell. Most of the girls also expressed there feeling torward this topic. But for whoever is absent you have to realize that it is a serious problem that we are facing today. Xavier pointed out a good suggestions that it first starts with what you do then what you can do for others. After the journal discussion the last 20 minutes of class we worked more on our count of monte cristo body biography. The reason we only had 20 minutes was because ms. Lahaise thought that we already completed it on monday. So last reminder is that there will be no vocabulary test on tuesday it is changed to monday. On tuesday we will have our count of monte cristo discussion. And last the next scribe post will be Carol!!!!!

Today was a short period and we had the usual everyday talks amongst students. Ms. Lahaise showed us how to make a pretty link. She told us we could go back and edit our post as long as it was on time! We had a vocabulary quiz then we did journal and got new words.

  • justink

Today we started off the class with a discussion whether or not to write a regular journal, one with a quote, or watch a moth. Ms. Lahaise made the executive decision for the journal, and it turned out to be a quote, which is “One volunteer is worth ten forced men.” After the completion of the journal we had silent reading time, where “everyone” silently read. Once silent reading was over Ms. Lahaise explained to us how silent reading is half of the Fat Paragraph grade. Hence if you don’t read, and instead sleep there goes half of your Fat Paragraph grade. Afterward this talk, we had a talk about our blogs, and how she is progressively posting on everyone’s blog, and stated that once she posts on your first blog, you should change your second blog to fit the criteria, and when the time has come to write the third blog you will know how to write it. Than for the rest of the period we worked the Body Biography project with our lit. circle groups. Nearing the end of the period, Ms. Lahaise commented on the lit. circle work that we turned in, and how they weren’t completed the way she wanted them to be. The plus of this is that if you got 1/2 credit than it only went your homework section. Some people who did/do a good job on their lit. circle roles are Sheresh and I believe Logan. So ask them for any help. She than proceeded to say that our quiz has been postponed till Wednesday, much like the reading up to chapter 78. To make sure remember to check the calendar because that is the honor thing to do. That was what the class was like, and the next scribe will be GEVORG!!!!!

so today was a pretty relaxing day which started with Ms.Lahaise telling us how everyone is getting spammed on their blogs. My compliments as usual were unanswered by Ms.Lahaise but I know she appreciates them because they make her day. She knows im the sunshine to her but enough about Ms.Lahaise and how she’s so amazing. We then saw a TED with Joachim De Posada which was interesting because he talked about how the key to success to delay gratification or in other words “don’t eat the marshmallow” which almost everyone in our society today does because of the sheer lack of self control. After we saw the TED, we took the vocabulary test and then did our Journal for the day. We then got new vocabulary words which i can’t post here because its against the rules so who ever was absent should take care of business or else Ms.Lahaise will be upset and no one wants that. As a side note i love Ms.Lahaise =)

    October 7,
Alright so on Friday Ms. Lahaise was absent and we had a substitute. When we entered class there was a short list on the whiteboard of what we were going to do. We did a new journal for a bit then we did silent reading for twenty to thirty minutes. Ms lahaise left an assignment for us to do for the rest of the period. The substitute didn’t have any other copy besides the one Ms. Lahaise had left so she got copies of it and gave one to all of us. If you were absent ask for one since its a big project. We got into our lit circle groups for the project. If you were absent you don’t need to be in the lit circle group but it was quicker for us that way. That was pretty much what we did in class. Ms. Lahaise will be back on Monday for those who still haven’t read the email or haven’t gotten it. Next scribe can be…….. Yocelyne.

    October 5th
Alright so today was a very eventful day. I mean it started off with your usual Muhammad making his daily compliments, Ms. Lahaise rejecting them. Of course we moved on to the TED talk which was Sarah Kay, personally one of my favorites! If you missed it, then I recommend you go and watch it! Then she gave us our usual time to write our journal. Except it was a bit interesting since she wanted us to possibly try to write our own spoken word poetry(ooops spoiler). Reading time….30minutes later. Discussion. It started off with people making very nice comments on Sarah Kay’s talk. You know the usual, “Oh I love what she had to say, so inspirational.” But it wasn’t until Evan spoke, “I don’t get what the point of this TED was.” That I noticed how much people were really into it. Everything after that was repetitive. Then Lahaise asked what if Sarah Kay was ugly, would you still get the same message. Some said yes others were honest and said no. I believe that it was Destinee who said no, since people are superficial by nature or atleast that’s how we’ve been brought up by this vastly growing culture of superficiality. Which although true only made some of us question one’s values and character. Although we could have kept going Lahaise cut us short and sent us on our merry way. to work with our lit circles. Then we exchanged rolls and bell rang. To sum it up find out what your roll is now, watch sarah kay because I think you’ll get something out of it rather than nothing. Are we really that superficial or are we just to lazy to be the difference out of the bunch? Sorry it was late guys ): I hope it was a bit intriguing.

Today was uneventful…vocab test and journal. No time for new words. That will be Wed. Be sure to check calendar for homework. Dear sweet Sandra can be the scribe tomorrow.

    9/30/2011 Scribe post.

We walked into class and immediately began to work on our journal which was already on the smart board when we walked in. Suddenly, Ms. Lahaise mentioned the homework that was due… Uh oh! Unfortunately, very few students actually did the lit circle homework that she assigned. Apparently there was some confusion amongst the students who didn’t actually look on the website for the instructions. Ms. Lahaise didn’t even get upset because its our own responsibility to make sure our work is done and to look on the website. Despite the fact that few people did the assignment, it still counts towards our grades.
After that discussion we continued to work on our journals and do silent reading for about 20-30 minutes. The quote for the journal was “that which opposes produces a benefit” — Heraclitus. Ms. Lahaise also added some thought provoking questions to help us understand the quote better. Ms. Lahaise asked the class if there was anyone who wanted to speak about the quote.
Evan raised his hand and said that when he was faced with an obstacle, he thought outside of the box and reached his objective. When he was in San Francisco, there was a fat paragraph due and he didn’t have a computer to turn it in on. So, thinking outside of the box, he used his windows phone to type up his assignment and emailed it to Ms. Lahiase.
Ms. Lahaise exclaimed, laughing, “I remember that! I don’t remember many things from last year, but I definitely remember that.”
Mahek then raised her hand and said, “do you remember the show George of the Jungle? And how he used to always run into the tree?” The class giggled some. She then went on to explain how every time he ran into the tree, he had to find a way around the tree.
Justin spoke about how he had a speech problem when he was a little kid. He used to think faster than he was able to speak, and this made it hard for people to understand him. His sister sometimes had to translate for him.
Muhammad raised his hand and spoke about what Justin had just stated. Apparently he had the same problem as Justin as far as the speech problem.
Lailah raised her hand and said that she had a friend that goes to her church who she thinks has aspergers, a slight form of autism, and how people at her church judge her because she’s a little different.
After a long discussion of many other partisipants, Ms. Lahaise quickly begn to make pointers and a few announcements:
Whenever you post a bi weekly reader or fat paragraph, it needs to be in a category or have a tag or else she wouldn’t be able to distinguish between an assignment or a post for fun. You make a category by going to the dashboard and clicking the “+ Add New Category” button on the right hand side of the page. You can name bi weekly readers as “Bi Weekly Reader” and fat paragraphs as “Fat Paragraphs”.
When you’re doing a bi weekly reader, or any other post, and you want to add a link, you can do so without making an ugly-looking address line at the bottom of your post. To make a nicer-looking link, simply highlight the link and refer to the toolbar above the text box and click on the button that says “insert/edit link”. A box will pop up where you paste the link and name it whatever you like. Click “Add Link” and wa-lah!
To post a video, get the embed code from the video’s website and instead of pasting it on the visual tab, switch it over to the HTML tab and paste the embed code.
To add an image, go to the “Add An Image” option where you can either choose from your computer, URL, or media library.
After these quick pointers, the class was basically over with 5 minutes remaining. There will be a vocabulary test on Tuesday.
The next scribe will be Sandra.

Sorry for the major latenes everyone this totaly sliped my mind for those who where absent wensday we startd class by taking our spelling test for the week. After the test we started silent reading and Ms. Lahaise gave me a very interesting book entitled “The Last Lecture”. After silent reading we learned new words that you have to get frome someone else. We then watched a TED by who I think is one of the best talkers of Ted I’ve seen in class. He was a man named John Francis and his talk was about listening and taking care of the ecosystem. We then had a freewrite and a discussion following after it. The discussion we had eventually set the tone for our class which is now to actually listen to people and understand when they are talking were they are coming from rather than just listening and waiting for them to finish so you can say what you ned to say. For some who had seen the talk for the second time, they said that they didn’t enjoy it as much as they did when the first had seen it or vice versa. Ms. Lahaise also made it clear that from now on rather than just looking at a Ted and picking out certain negative or positive things, look at the talk as a whole and discuss the whole thing. That’s what happened in our class on wensday thank you for reading this!

Today’s class was short and productive.
    1. Vocabulary test
    2. Students worked on their Count character maps
    3. New vocabulary words

Muhammad tried to look productive. Tereza was productive. Destinee loves her iPad.

Hey there! Today was a pretty awesome day. Aside from having AMAZING weather, we also had our final rules assembly :( which took up about half of our class time. As soon as we got back from the auditorium, we began our journals. Today, we used the fantastical Brainstormer and Ayesha got to spin the wheel. The wheel landed on: “Daring enterprise”, “Aztec/Incan”, and “harpoon”. We initially had exactly thirteen minutes and fourty-four seconds to create a story out of those three topics, but ended up getting more time. Yay :D Destinee and Ayesha shared their lovely stories to the class. Ms. Lahaise was astounded at the creativity and told the class about her idea of starting a class solely focused on creative writing. After journal discussion, we began a Count of Monte Cristo project. The task is to create a character map, different (and better) than the one that was posted on the Count of Monte Cristo Blog over summer. We got into four groups. The group leaders were Evan, Tereza, Tierra, and Muhammad (Sandra and Mahek are in Muhammad’s group). We didn’t really have that much time to work on it, so we’ll definitely be getting back to to the maps as soon as possible, which is Friday, I think? Friday is also vocabulary quiz day, due to the fact that we won’t meet up on Tuesday, and Monday is when we take our pictures during English.

Also, important new stuff: The forum is gone! This is where the scribe posts will be posted as comments from now on. There is also a calendar up on the right corner of the white board in class now. For those of you who won’t be able to make it to class on a certain day, put your name up on the date you won’t be there beforehand.

And I think I’ve said everything… Next scribe is Xavier.

Website Issues: New students signing up may still experience technical difficulties but the site will be free of problems soon

    TED – Ken Robinson
    http://www.ted.com/talks/ken_r…..ivity.html

Lahaise: ” His message about education is very powerful” ” I show students TED talks because it shows them what a good speaker is because in the near future all of you will be presenting in class and throughout your lives”

Journal– Reflection on the TED (sorry in advance if i spell anyone’s name wrong)

Teresa : “this is my second time watching this TED and i got the same message out of it. Art is important and it is necessary to make to more of a requirement in schools”

Justin: ” What really?” (to Teresa’s first statement)

Ayesha: “It made a big impact on me. When i am in art class i just think ART ART ART ART………” ” My mom does not agree with my infatuation with art

Lahaise: Is it a cultural point of view??

Ayesha: “My dad is really cultural and thinks that art is useless”

Lahaise: “For my first department meeting i am going to show this TED and hopefully your mother will understand you better” ” Ms. Roger’s daughter is an artist and when she first came to Ms.Roger’s and I to tell us about wanting to pursue art we both tried to persuade her out of it and finally she became a art teacher…. Though she lost her passion for art and I hope you don’t Ayesha”

Muhammad: “I agree with Ayesha that’s totally my life creativity is a process of trial and error but in society error are always considered a bad thing.. I feel like there are always two voices in my head one telling me to follow my dreams like being a rapper the other telling me to accomplish my parents dreams”

Lahaise: ” Muhammad are you going to pursue your dreams?”

Muhammad: ” I am going to do what my parents want me to do otherwise i feel as though i am letting them down”

Layla: ” The perception for artists is being sleazy/bad people. Society doesn’t appreciate artists but instead think that all artists are only good for the cover of vogue… but when an artist looks at a canvas they get inspired with what they look at while other’s don’t actually understand what they are looking at”

Sonali: ” I agree with Muhammad it’s basically the same thing but with more stress and competition we are more driven to pursue the arts but because of society we are pushed out of arts. When i went to the college fair last weekend my mom wouldn’t even let me look at Art schools”

Tierra: ” I think its really ironic about the whole higher subjects and math being one of them because for our actual jobs we use very little math”

    Lahaise: “I can barely add!!”

Carol: ” It’s never been in my mind to do something in the art field. My mom always tells me to become a lawyer”

Lahaise: ” what i am getting from this is that immigration/family factor’s into your live’s a lot”

Everyone :“Its not necessarily our family’s fault but actually they believe that money equals happiness”
Xavier: ” It’s crazy i was listening to all the stories my parents tell me that i can do anything i want to do such as becoming a video game designer and being a sports therapist because i want to incorporate what my mom wants me to do”
Destiny: ” Art for me is makeup and fashion that is what i want to do. My parents don’t think that there are many jobs for that field so i am thinking about becoming a plastic surgeon”
Justin: ” My dad had so many jobs when he first came to America i my dad does not want we to go through the tough times he went through”
Lahaise: “My boyfriends family emigrated form Russia and his nephew got a full ride to college and their is so much pressure on him to do well ”
Muhammad: ” Also respect plays a big part for instance being an engineer equals respect then on the other hand being a musician equals no respect in society”
Lahaise: “imagine if Steve Jobs was never born!!” ” It’s hard to go against your parents but if you don’t your life is going to be miserable because 50% of your life has to do with you work. Find out what you love to do!!” ” I used to work at Nordstorm and made $600 a week but i felt miserable so i quit and finally i found my passion TEACHING”
Lahaise: ” if your not wrong you wont learn. Its OK to be wrong!!”
Muhammad: ” I believe the whole immigrant issue does play a factor in our lives because i have friends whose parents also a re immigrants and they are dealing with what i have to deal with”
Cearsar: ” i actually don’t agree my parents are immigrants but they want me to become anything i feel passionate about and they always tell me that they will support me with whatever i choose to do”
Xavier: “Immigrants they see America as the land of the free but what they don’t see is what they are putting their children through by trying to accomplish their dreams through them”
Then after the discussion we all had to share our sentences out loud
    Internet/ Blog talk:
“I don’t want you to be afraid but aware of the Internet. You all have grown up with technology and we teachers think you guys are tech savvy but you guys are just innocent little babies . What you guys don’t know is that when you type of search something on line you are leaving digital footprints. I want you all to be careful and not misuse the Internet. Have you ever googled yourself??? Once again be careful you don’t know what could pop up”- Lahaise
    Layla: ” Identity theft ”
Lahaise :“You all if you like can use your sentences and incorporate them into your bi weekly readers I have never done this before so you guys are actually my guinea pigs”

    Scribe post 9/12/11 by Justin:

Its been a while since the last class period, 4 days or so, and so i don’t remember that much but i will write the most important topics we discussed in this post.
When class started and everyone was in their seats Ms. Lahaise asked a few individuals what an average day in her class is like which goes something like this: journal or Ted, silent reading (the book has to be a book you are reading on your own free time, not a school related book), and then a specific topic that Ms.Lahaise picks herself.
After this little introduction we watched a video about what drives us and “what is your sentence”, , and than the response to the video . At first Ms. Lahaise thought we were too young to respond to this question , but when she watched the video she changed her mind; you have to watch to see why . Then she told us to think about what our sentence would be because we have to share it with the rest of the class on Wednesday.
After this little motivational video we wrote our essay on The Count. Which was than followed by a speech by our great teacher that told us of her expectations that she held for us. Such as how a “Deadline is a DEADLINE” and how she is a hard@$$. She than procedded to tell us not to cheat on her vocab words and how we shouldnt plagerise and all that good stuff that teachers talk about.
The last thing we did was our vocab words.
She also said that the character chart for The Count was going to happen this coming Friday and LOOK AT THE CALENDAR.

Hi guys!J Today we had a fairly easy day in class. Everyone came in and started studying for the vocab test. If you were absent today and missed the test you can make it up on Tuesday during nutrition. The class got to study for about 5 min and then we took the test.
After the test we had a journal.
The journal: “An old friend will help you move. A good friend will help you move a dead body.”
    – Jim Hayes
While doing the journal Mrs. Lahaise reminded us for the first journal check she will give us a warning from before but after that she will collect them randomly, without a warning. Make sure to keep track of your journals. This was journal number oneJ. After the journal we got new vocab words so make sure to get them from someone in class because we will be having another test on Tuesday.

Mrs. Lahaise had some important announcements for us. First she asked us to be honest about whether all of us will be on chapter 35 by Friday. Everyone raised his or her hand!:) Mrs. Lahaise also told us that we would have folders in about a week. The folders are where all of our work goes, like graded vocab tests. You can go and take a look at your folders anytime but you are not allowed to take anything from them. The folders are very important because if Mrs. Lahaise’s computer breaks down and we don’t have grades she can just recreate our grades through the folders! Mrs. Lahaise mentioned that last year there was all of this weird stuff going on with folders like people taking other peoples folders and their work then changing the name, putting another persons name, stuff like that. She said she is really disgusted with some of the juniors and seniors for doing things like that last year. Basically, don’t do anything dishonest with the folders. On a lighter note we found out that the AP kids last year had a 75% pass rate! Good job AP people!J
