Today in Ms. Lahaise’s class, the students came in the room and were immediately given the first portion of the Math CST to complete. This test took the majority of the period to finish, and once everyone was done, Ms. Lahaise began to discuss a little bit about the Cyber Bullying project. The students were to form groups of 2 or 3 people, resulting with 10 groups in total. The dates that we are to present include Tuesday, May 29th to Friday, June 1st. Throughout the four days, the students will present in front of classes taught by Ms. Rill, Mrs. Nissen, Ms. Rauch, Dr. Armstrong, Ms. Gordon, or Dr. Grekov for approximately 15 minutes. Every group picked a certain period they would like to present on one of the days offered, in order to notify the teachers in advance. On Monday, Ms. Lahaise will discuss the project in more detail so there will not be any confusion. The class also left their Bedford Readers on their desks at the end of the period and cheerfully went about their day. May you all have a great and well deserved weekend!

Today, unfortunately, Ms.Lahaise was not here and therefore another sort-of free day was enjoyed by students. Although it was seemingly a sort-of-kind of a free day, work was not gone undone, and so as all the students began to congregate in Ms.Lahaise’s class, everyone took their seats and waited for the substitute to take attendance. After the substitute took attendance, he showed us the assignment on the board which was to get in our Lit Circles and discuss the home work, and then to get in pairs and test each other. Once he showed us the assignment, he let us get into our circles and everyone did their thing. When class was ending, we made a pile up front and turned in our homework (which by the way was hand written so if anyone typed it, you are S.O.L).
Not much went on today, due to the fact that Ms.Lahaise was not here, however here is the daily scribe! (=

Today in Ms.lahaises class most of the students came in anxious and jittery as some had Ap tests the next day or the next week! Ms.Lahaise began to calm us down and talk to us about what we are to expect next week for our AP Language and Composition test. She told us that he believes we are all ready and prepared to do great! =) yay! She gave us some good tips on how when studying we are to make the rhetorical strategies book out “bible” haha Ms.lahaise is to funny! She explained to us on how she is not going to assign homework for the weekend because she wants us to study up for the big week! We then went on discussing the journal from last week since we did not get to finish our discussion. After we talked about the journal Ms.lahaise gave us some work in our rhetorical strategy’s book. We had to overview passages and write down what strategy’s we found. She allowed us to work in a group of 2 or 3 while she finished calling people up for their essays. As the class was coming to its last 10 minuets Ms.Lahaise went back to discussing the AP test and how we MUST MUST review and focus because we will be sitting a long time in the test. As for the people who are coming for the practice test you guys must make sure to be on time and remember its not just her class that can come and take it other students that want to prepare can as well. Make sure to come through the front gate and straight to her classroom. Do not be late because the faster you get started the faster you are out of there. She then told us about how she will be bringing us a piece of peppermint to eat because they say peppermint helps you to focus and enhance your skills while taking the test. That is so sweet of her! After that class had finally come to an end and everyone was clearly checked out of class.She then decided to change her mind and give us a easy assignment for the weekend in our rhetorical books to prepare us for the test! Everyone of course complained but you guys have to remember it will help you in the long run! Good luck to everyone on the AP test i know you will all do a great job!

After some brief confusion over seating
arrangements, today’s short class started with Mrs. Lahaise showing her
favorite T.E.D. in lieu of a vocabulary test. The T.E.D. featured Sherry Burkle
talking about society’s shift from conversation to connection via social
networking, and the accompanied risk of people losing themselves as they lose
each other. We had a few minutes of journal writing to reflect on the talk
before Mrs. Lahaise started talking about testing. Everyone is going to take
the AP test on Glenn Hall, and will have to make up CST’s Thursday. The CST’s
are especially important this year, so don’t blow them off. The English CST’s
are supposed to be Monday and Tuesday, and we’re all expected to do very well.
If you go from Proficient to Advanced, your grade will be raised. However,
getting a 5 on the AP Test won’t count towards the class, because, as Mr. Mukai
pointed out, there are people who can get 5’s without contributing to the
group. Incidentally, there will be 15 questions on the English CST’s that are
part of the EAP. Don’t forget to do those. After all the test talk, the
discussion move to the T.E.D. There were varying views, and people both agreed
with and disagreed with Burkle. Sung made a point about people losing the
ability to bridge topics while speaking, which, Mrs. Lahaise said, is the art
of conversation. She also used Mrs. Shaik as an example of the limitations of texting
in expressing peoples’ personalities. By the time the class ended, there had
yet to be a general consensus, except that pretty much everyone had turned against
Sung. If you didn’t get to share your ideas, save them for Thursday, because
the conversation will continue. Don’t forget to do your lit circle work either.
By the way, I believe scribe posts are supposed to
be posted with your first name and first initial of your last name, followed by
the date of the class. Most people don’t seem to be doing this, so keep it in
mind. At this point, I think it would also be helpful to add some sort of
counter to the site to keep track of scribe posts. Anyway, enjoy your midweek.

As we all came into class to have our seat, we were all informed of a practice test for the coming AP Lang test next week. To some of us, it came as a surprise, and as others, a nuisance. We all eventually quieted down, except for a few students that asked for what page Ms. Lahaise wanted us to take the test on. Then we started, and then there was silence. Except for the constant sniffling, coming from myself and others.
After the testing time had ended, we went over all the questions and calculated our scores. After all that was settled, we turned in the tests.
Once that was finished, we had about 30 minutes left in class. And with nothing much left to do, Ms. Lahaise decided that it was best to simple give the class some free time.

Ms. Lahaise began the period by collecting our Lit Circle
Roles. She then talked about what will be happening next week because of the AP
testing. The vocabulary test will be cancelled next week and the following week
will be our AP test for Language and Composition.
She then passed out the Cliffs test that we had taken
recently. Ms. Lahaise made sure that we did peer grading today because apparently,
studies show that it is good to see other peoples’ papers in order to discover
what to do and what not to do. After we were done grading our peers, we did a
Journal. While we were completing our journals, she passed out our new seating
arrangements. Some people ended up getting seats that they had previously, so a
few were moved. In the words of Ms. Lahaise, “We’ll see how this works.”
After receiving our own Cliffs essays back, Ms. Lahaise
informed us of what we were to do with them. Since we were to bring them home,
read the sample essay and the scoring rubric on page 239 and compare to your
own essay and score. Make sure to bring the essay back on Monday. Even if you
are taking the AP test and are skipping period three, you must try to find a
way to get it into Lahaise’s classroom on Monday (be a critical thinker).
When Ms. Lahaise finished speaking about the Cliffs essays,
she instructed us to break off and into our Literature Circle groups.
Unfortunately, she was very unhappy with the recent jobs that the illustrators
have been doing – wanting us to be more creative. Similar to most times, our
discussion about Native Son went a bit off topic and grew from there. On
Monday, be prepared to come back to this section in Native Son because we didn’t
get very far in our group discussion. Also be prepared for the upcoming practice
test that will be held in class on Monday.

Today seemed like a usual today but it wasn’t because Ms. Lahaise was not her today and instead was Mr. Hill our subaitute teacher. He first took role for the students and by the way he looked and acted he seemed like a subistitue that would not take crap from anyone. He told the class the Ms. Lahaise assigned the class to do a free write journal for about 30 minutes. After we finished our journal we had silent reading for like an hour or so. And finally the class went to their literature circle groups to discuss about Native Son for the rest of the period.

Today was the day everyone dreaded… We took the Cliffnote’s terms test which didnt take very long and continued on with silent reading until everyone was then. The Mrs. Lahaise reminded the class of the next AP test that she will proctor not this week but next week on may 12 on Saturday morning! Then we watched a TED video to finish the class. This video was of Frank Warren who basically collects secrets.

On this gloomy day, students walked into Ms. Lahaise’s 3rd period and quickly went to their seats. Ms. Lahaise quickly told us that we were getting our files back and we had to take out only our journals since they were too full. After what appeared as a long time, the folders were collected and a Ted Talk began to play on the Smartboard. After the Ted Talk was done, everyone went to work on their journals. We were supposed to find who the audience was, fallacies, and the purpose of his speech. We then had a long, stimulating conversation about this Ted Talk. We then shifted to have a discussion about Native Son. We didn’t finish our discussion so we had no choice but to stop for the day, and we will continue our discussion on Monday. To do our weekend homework, we need our green Rhetorical books. Ms. Lahaise then collected our essays which were written on Book 2. There is an afterschool practice test on Monday April 30! As well as May 12! Tell Ms. Lahaise if you are coming to take either test.

The
class started off as any other Tuesday would. Ms. Lahaise returned with a fresh
new dew, and everyone else was scrambling to take out their vocabulary and
learn the words for the imminent test. However, Ms. Lahaise informed us that
one of her smart board remotes were accidentally taken, and if anyone knows
where it is please return it. Also, we all have new numbers for are smart
remotes. That is our birthday month and day, followed by the last three digits
on our school ID. NOTE: If your are born in January through September, do not
put the 0 in front of the month. Before we started the test, Ivan came in and
asked Maxine to prom!!! It was so cute and she said YES! Then we took the test
and found out our scores on the remote. We then worked on our journal quote and
wrote down the new vocabulary shortly after. Then the class was over.

To our dismay, Ms.Lahaise was not at school today an thus today was a “not so productive way”. When we got into class, the substitute was waiting with the counselor from the College Office and she was hear so we could fill out preliminary papers so that on the day of the AP test, we could get straight to the test. There were only 14 of us who had not already filled out the stuff in a previous AP class, and so she focused on those students while everyone else began doing their free write. After she was done, and after everyone finished their free write, we began silent reading and doing our stuff at the same time and everyone was captivated within their own work.
Not much happened today, however this is the scribe post for today.

Today was interesting, first off, there was a firedrill which took up most of the beginning of class. Once everyone filed in, we watched a very interesting TED about a woman – Dianna Nyad — who get this; failed. Yes, you heard that right. Dianna, age 60, tried to swim across the ocean from Cuba to Florida, and probably would have made it, but was stung multiple times by some sort of jelly, and found that she couldn’t go on any longer.
This story brought out many diverse comments from, Lauren, Jilly, Sunjay, Jasmine, and Ahmer. Lauren found that we need to live our lives the way we want to, Sunjay reminded us of The Road Not Taken, Jasmine said something wise along the lines of ” Don’t be worried about the destination, but the journey”. Lastly, Ahmer found it interesting how Dianna framed her story, making it seem as though she would succeed. Dianna is set to swim again very soon, and if you want to keep updated on that, Lahaise suggested looking her up.
We then took another AP test – I know, I know how many essays?– and learned that we will be doing a group project in the not so distant future about safety in small groups, but more on that later.

The classroom was filled with nerves, everyone was quickly looking over the vocabulary words preparing for the quiz–not that we didn’t study before or anything–Mrs.Lahaise then gave each of us our ID #s for the Smart clickers(the numbers are in alphabetical order). After telling everyone their ID numbers, Mrs.Lahaise passed out the Smart clickers for the smart board and passed out the quiz. The quiz ended quickly and almost all of the students were pleased with their scores on the quiz. Once the quizzes were collected and the clickers were turned off and set aside, we all quietly worked on a journal for 10 minutes. After everyone had finished with their journals, Mrs.Lahaise moved on to the vocabulary words for next week’s quiz. After we were all done going over the words, Mrs.Lahaise smoke about Native Son very briefly and that for Thursday’s Lit Circle assignment we would have to read up to page 166 and stop at the paragraph starting with “He opened his eyes….” The students all began to pack up as they noticed that the bell was about to ring, and as they did so Mrs.Lahaise also reminded us that the Cliffs Terms test will be held on Tuesday May 1st and that it will be with the Smart clickers, in replace of a vocabulary quiz for that day. In the end, Mrs.Lahaise finished explaining everything with a few seconds to spare, the students finished packing up and began to head out as the bell rang and ended our class period.

So today was April 16, 2012.
There was a lot of things to do, so we had to hurry, hurry, hurry.
First on the list was the book
talks.

Carissa talked about The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and
said that it was action packed and interesting, and that you should just read
because it is also an easy read..

Daisy talked about Dracula by Bram Stoker. She said that it
was about vampires and also about romance and that it was different because it
is written in old language. And just for Sunga, it is NOT TWILIGHT!

Then I talked about The Help by Kathryn Stockett. It is
about segregation and it is really interesting. Easy read you guys!

Brenna talked about The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. It was
written so well that Brenna was paranoid of walking home alone.. that is how
you know a book is good.
JUST A REMINDER… YOU HAVE TO
DO TWO BOOK TALKS BEFORE JUNE SEVENTH‼‼!
Guess what‼ we had no practice test‼ Woo hoo! There was a lot of noise in the room so Ms
Lahaise had to catch our attentions.. SQUIRREL.. 1 2 3 all eyes on me.. and yet.. tons of
noise.
We turned in our homework and got together according to
role. All the illuminators sat together, all the connectors sat together, etc.
Each group was to then discuss and pick 2 main points. We had a very
interesting discussion
Ms Lahaise is going to post the practice test dates on the calendar.
As of right now, they are April 30 after school from 3:15 to 6:30 and May 12 around
10 in the morning.
MAKE SURE that you use TED Talks and connect to thing using
random knowledge on the AP Lang Test. You need to be really specific and show
them that you are smarter than you really are.
NEXT MONDAY’S BLOG
has to an analyzed speech from the website Ms Lahaise is going to email
us. It is just the response (2nd part) of the columnist assignment
and you have to make it engaging so that it is Blog-worthy.

Hey guys! DO NOT GET SENIORITIS. Mrs. Lahaise says its crucial to keep your focus around this time, now that AP’s are coming. Do your work! To get us back into ‘the groove’, we watched a TED. The TED was about abundance and how it leads to new contributions and new discoveries in our world. We had a whole discussion pertaining to this specific TED. She combined our Native Son groups, 2 combined, and we had to choose reps for our groups. Muhammad made an AP Lang Rhetorical Device test, of about 21 questions, and our mission was to answer these correctly! The objective? to get the questions pertaining to rhetorical devices correct, hence earning a point for your group as a whole. If answered correctly, your point is removed! How exciting.
The game was pretty entertaining, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. During the game, Mrs.Lahaise kept pulling students out of class to discuss our essays. After the game, she gave us approx. 15 minutes to come up with two “AP” level questions based on rhetorical devices.

We have about 3 weeks left till our AP test. So now we are trying to persuade Ms. Lahaise not to give us a test. We failed. We did a practice test in our Cliffs book: Practice test VI or 4 pages. 209-221. Then you times the number you got right by 1.2980. If you got over a 30, after you times it by 1.2980, then you will be fine. We are currently doing a jeopardy like game like we did Monday except we have buttons and/or buzzers so hopefully it will go well. During this game Ms. Lahaise will be talking to people about their essays. We are making rules as we go along and it is going well. We only did a couple of questions in the end and we worked out some of the bugs in our game but not all of them. Now we are doing a fat paragraph, out loud , Faye went.

We walked in to Ms. Lahaise class and we were given an open note quiz. People who missed the class won’t be able to take the make-up vocab test with their note. We did a Journal and Ms. Lahaise told us that Journals maybe due after break. After the quiz we got new words and we discussed Native Son. We talked about where we left off with Native Son. We asked questions like, what do you think about Bigger? We entered a discussion and we shared what we thought. Many felt that Bigger was flawed and they didn’t feel bad for Bigger in his life. In conclusion we thought Bigger was thing irrationally when he first began. Ron brought up a good point by saying that he was thinking rationally afterwards, but he just didn’t care. We thought that if he were normal he wouldn’t have been able to sleep and he would be up all day. Ms. LAHAISE HAS NEVER READ DORIAN GREY!!!!! We went over Psychopaths, which is when someone has an anti-social personality disorder and have no conscious of how society works. A good essay question would be is Bigger really a psychopath or is he just the way he is because of his environment. Ms. Lahaise told us to listen and she told us we need to know about our essays. The questions we can do in our group are 8 questions long and we each need to do 2 questions per person. Each person must write their own essay question. This will be formatted in multiple choice questions and due by the end of the book. For the last 30 minutes we began to make up our questions while MS. Lahaise went over some of our essays. Spring Break is next and no homework will be due when we come back from break. J

We began class as usual on a Monday afternoon. Mrs. Lahaise began the period by collecting worn down white/brown Native Son novels. (if you still have an old copy go and get your new one!) She continued on and then talked about the scribes posts and said that we are going to get emails about the scribes tonight, because some people have done it more than others, so we will get an email with directions concerning that.
She then collected the Lit Circles, and discussed what the course of our day was going to be. Unfortunately, the jeopardy game wasn’t working out (technical difficulties) so she decided that during the class period we would engage in lit circles, and simultaneously she would pull people aside to discuss our essays that we wrote last week. We then watched an amazing TED on Optical Illusions (not sure if i spelled that right. Allusion? Illusion..Right?) Yeah, and then we had to fill out a survey for the one and only LAUSD(: telling them our true feelings about our lovely school and its lovely distrtict I was honest, hope you were too. I’d also like to mention that Mrs. Lahaise admitted that she cared about us, so if you did not mark STRONGLY AGREE, you were not listening in class.
Next, we shared our thoughts about the TED and I think we all came to the conclusion that the purpose was, we see the world for it’s use, and each individual perception of the world is different and can contain multiple truths. (that TED was by Beau Latto, so for those who were absent, be sure to check that out.) We then established there is NO SCHOOL FRIDAY and not because of Caesar Chavez, although we are grateful for him anyways, and NO we do not get out of school early on Thursday. So stoppit. Then we established that as of now, school will cease (yay!) on the 18th of June because of the superfluous furlow week occurring that we all love and Mrs. Lahaise hated . After coming back from this tangent, we split into our lit circle groups, talked, and then switched roles at the end. After a brief discussion on Native Son, we went back into our groups to make up 8 questions derived from the concepts in the Cliffs. The goal was to draw a visual for each. It was HARD to say the least, but most of us got the job done.
For some reason AP Lang goes by sooooooo quickly, and by this time we looked up and there was 10 minutes left in the period. Ms. Lahaise made her concluding remarks for the day letting us know that Thursday, 3/29/2012 there will be an assignment posted based on Book 1 of Native Son. And that will be it for Spring Break. DONT READ AHEAD (mhmmhmm.. Ahmer) And when we come back from break (this will be posted on the calendar by the way) Bring Cliffs, Rhetorical Devices, and Native Son. EVERY SINGLE DAY. Also the final essay for the columnist will be due AFTER SPRING BREAK. Do not choose another columnist, because we will be moving onto speeches.

As usual, everyone in the class
noisily entered the classroom and spent time socializing with their peers. Ms.
Lahaise made her way to the front of the class, ready to begin talking when the
TA came in with letters –that are actually surveys –which we are supposed to
give to our parents. Almost half the class didn’t pay attention as the letters
were passed around because everyone had the onus of studying for the vocab test
we were going to have. As everyone was studying…and socializing, Ms. Lahaise
announced a new rule for the whole class ***NEW RULE: IF YOU SIMPL Y CAN NOT
PRINT SOMETHING AT HOME WHICH IS DUE THE NEXT DAY, FOR EXAMPLE THE LIT CIRCLE
ROLES, SEND IT TO THE HOMEWORK DROP SO THAT SHE CAN PRINT IT IN CLASS. IT IS
MUCH EASLIER THIS WAY, AND PLEASE DO NOT BRING IT ON A USB OR EMAIL IT TO
YOURSELF, JUST PUT IT IN THE HOMEWORK DROP.*** We then started the vocab test,
and after the fairly easy test we did a couple minutes of silent reading. Ms.
Lahaise then went straight to the Lit Circle Roles and wrote down who the
Discussion Directors were. She then switched gears and began talking about
which Rhetorical Device we have done, and the general consensus was that we
finished about 24 devices. Then she went
on to explain what type of questions we should make for the cliff terms test.
We have to make 2 questions for each device, more along the lines of when it is
used and why it is used rather then what it is. She assigned the devices to the
groups, so if you are absent, ask your discussion director which devices you
are doing. We then broke out into our
groups and began discussing the questions. After coming up with the questions, we then
had 10 minutes to discuss our roles in our lit circle groups. After the groups,
we started discussing Native Son together. We began by talking about Bigger
beating up Gus, and how that originates from his fear, and how Bigger
translates fear into anger. We then move onto Civil Rights, and how we have to
relate the story to that time because the story takes place in the 1940’s.
Malcom X and MLK were brought up and the movements, and the different type of
movements. Everyone related these movements to the books and how Bigger has a
feeling like many of the people who went through the Civil Movement. Eddie made an allusion to the Joseph Kony
situation, and how Bigger is like the children Joseph Kony kidnaps, because
just like Bigger the children, out of fear, turn to violence when they could
equally turn around and shoot Kony with the gun they are shooting their parents
with. Then we move onto the issue of why Dalton actually hires Bigger. Some
people thought that Ms. Dalton is made blind to symbolize not taking skin color
into consideration. Andree made a
connection to the question asked about Unions, and analyzed it as Bigger’s
unknowing of Unions except for they are bad, as people only believing what they
are told and not what the truth actually is. We went on a tangent and began
discussing history and how the same happened with the Russians during the Cold
War, and how propaganda was made for Americans to fear Russians, and visa
versa. After the history discussion, we began making predictions about what we
might think happen next in the story. Finally to end the class, Ms. Lahaise
asked the Discussion Directors to share one of the questions they had come up
with. Ms. Lahaise made an announcement saying that “ After today, everyone has
to title their Lit Role Circles like the following “Native Son Your Role, Pages Read”. If it is not
like this, then it will be marked as missing and go in the folder.

As the students walked in to Ms. Lahaise’s room, everyone was expecting to see Mrs. Gold standing there waiting for everyone to take their seats, but to our surprise, she was not there. As we all know, it was going to be an easy short day since we didn’t have our Vocabulary Test, which it was. The sub took role, chatted with us for a few minutes and let us go to work on the Journal which was a quote by Winston Churchill. “History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.” After the quote we had a choice of either studying for an exam we have coming up later in the day or to do some silent reading. It was just another Tuesday and there wasn’t anything particularly special that day.

Class: Tuesday; 3/13/12
Hello my dear period three muchacho’s! Today I was given the
honor of being your scribe, which is a pretty dirty job (no irony intended). So
listen up and I hope all your questions and concerns will be addressed!
Today we started off the day talking about the three English
classes that will be offered in the following year. The classes offered include
Expos (most likely taught by Mr. Nomachi and considered the easiest of the
three), Advance Comp. (taught by the one and only Ms. Lahaise; a class known to
have a big workload but more “loose” than Lit), and finally AP Lit (a very
Shakespeare/Jane Austin-filled class taught by the retiring Mr. Nomachi). In
basic terms, Ms. Lahaise recommends Expos to victims of senioritis, Advanced
Comp for the “UC”-driven students, and AP for those looking into the privates.
In regards to the yellow papers, teacher’s signatures are not required; it is
just how our school is run (rolls eyes like Ms. Lahaise did in class).
Next was TED TIME!!!! Today’s TED talk was by Mike Rowe, the
“Dirty Jobs Guy”/ former opera singer (The link to his talk is at the bottom of
the post.) Mike Rowe discussed what he believes is a “war on jobs”, his
representation of how our nation’s economic infrastructure is damaged due to
the lack of skilled jobs like plumbing, welding, etc. that people tend to look
down upon. He believes there should be a changed mindset in a society that
stresses the priorities of safety and passion too much. Interestingly, this revelation was
attained while castrating a sheep’s testicles with the mouth (for the absent
people, I suggest you watching the TED before calling me crazy).
Good News!! The Cliff’s term test will be a very different
format from the previous one. Next Monday we will have a “jeopardy”-type game
(maybe on the smart board) that Ms. Lahaise will work on this weekend. It will
be an interactive game and “clickers” may be used. Again, specific details will
be announced later.
Next, Ms. Lahaise gave new words and thankfully did not have
the audacity to give us a test right after.
Afterward, we had a class discussion of “Native Son”.
Multiple people made a point about how Bigger perceives only one side of things
(when he judges a random white man of having a great life). The other students
were also sympathetic toward the main character in the sense that he was deeply
discouraged and lacked the simple virtue of opportunity. In your future
reading, Ms. Lahaise notified us to ask yourself what the author is saying
about society.
Ms. Lahaise also assigned a brand new assignment called “Lit
Circles” in which a group of 4 students are assigned specific roles including
Discussion Director, illuminator, connector, and illustrator. The group of
three should disregard the role of illustrator. A link to the Lit Circle information
is provided below for those of you who are too lazy to go to the “Important
Docs” section on Lahaise’s lair main page. Today we decided who got what role
so if you are absent; make sure you contact someone from your group!

It was Tuesday, so you all know what
that means! Yes, we all got to class in a frenzy – trying
desperatly to memorize the words before the test, while those who’d
already studied sat and talked. So, it started off like any other
Tuesday. Before the test, we touched base on the things we did Monday
with Mrs. Gold: the questions on the two articles and how we briefly
discussed Native Son. Lahaise hinted that the rat we read about would
later have importance, an importance or metaphorical meaning that
while we all guessed at, we couldn’t hone in on.
We then – with much confusion
– proceeded to look at the wheel for the journal we’d write after
we took the dreaded vocabulary test. A point that proved none of us
had much gumption.
After spinning the wheel a couple
times, we stuck with “Revolt”, “Burned”, and “Outhouse”.
Three ingredients for what looked like a fun story.
We took the test ( I probably failed)
and wrote our quirky journals before some people got up and shared
them. Sunjay wrote a poem entitled something like “ Yippity Yap Yap
Yap Yap” in which he chronicled the outcome of this class. Next,
Daniel took the stand, literally, and read his journal from the
podium in the front of the room. All in all, the journals were funny
and brief, and though they included the same three concepts, they
were all very VERY different.
Mrs. Lahaise asked for everyone who
wanted the Native Son on the computer to raise their hands and
tell her so that she could send it to them, so if you want it digital
she said today was it, so I’d email her now.. No, don’t keep reading,
email her.
Assuming you’ve all either told her by
now or are fine with your beat up but beautifully written copy of
Native Son, I will continue with the last ten minutes of class
where Allison presented her book. She read 1984
by Orson Wells – the story we get Big Brother from. You know, Big
Brother’s watching? That.
We’re
taking the EAP on Thursday, and Lahaise will not be there, we’ll
probably have Mrs. Gold. All we need for Monday is our copy of Native
Son, but it should be a very
busy day even though our book load is light – thank god for that
though, right?

Well today started off like any other Monday, boring and tiring. Today in AP Lang. we had Mrs.Gold. She has us read two articles that were called “Blame It on the Pill” and “We’re All Foodies Now”. After reading we proceeded to answer questions she had us work on individually about each of them. After diligently working for most of the class period, we discussed our answers as a class and then we moved on to talking about the reading we had to do for homework from “The Native Son.” While talking about it we discussed the characters and why certain things happened as well as personal thoughts on what was going on and our thoughts about the book in general, so far. The class flew by quickly today and before I knew it our discussion was cut off with the bell to go
to lunch.

Today’s journal was based upon a Ted Talk by Kevin Allocco.
When discussing the purpose of this particular TED, I found a few things that
my fellow classmates said to be interesting: First, YouTube can make anyone
famous. Second, through videos, different cultures can come together. And
third, in order to “make it viral,” it all depends on luck, the community, and
connections. Ms. Lahaise also wanted to add that although the topic was very
exciting, it would be polite if everyone would be quiet and pay attention to whomever
is speaking. After a little bit of silent reading, Ramtin collected the eleven Journals
(including the TED) that were due today.
Then Muhammad led a very stimulating discussion on “Only a
Daughter” by Sandra Cisneros (it can be found on page 597 in the Bedford
Reader).
After a very interesting debate that was held mainly between Ahmer and
Jasmin, Jasmin turned the victor!
Now for the good stuff! Instead of reading “Grapes of Wrath,”
like we had planned, we are now going to read “Native Sun” by Richard Wright.
Ms. Lahaise repeatedly stated that since there are three parts to the book and that
since there aren’t any individual chapters, we would have to pay great
attention to her posts on the calendar. Since she passed out two different
books, there are different layouts with different page numbers. When reading the
homework on the calendar, pay attention to what color your book is. She will
state the color of the book – whether it is white or black – and then the pages
to read and a specific paragraph for which we must end at. Ms. Lahaise doesn’t want
us to go ahead in the book because it might ruin it for the class and because
there will be homework for each “chapter” we are reading. Make sure to keep
sticky notes ready for writing down annotations. If you don’t want to have the hassle
of using sticky notes, another solution would be to buy your own book. If you would
like a digital version of the book then make sure to e-mail Ms. Lahaise, and be
specific about what kind of device it will be on (iPad, nook, kindle, etc.).
Ms. Lahaise wasn’t very specific when it came to what the
homework is, but the homework will probably be to read the first twenty-five or
thirty pages and to answer a few questions. Thanks for reading! The new scribe

It was a dark, cold day
when we all rushed into our seats. Third period had started, and we had lots of
things to complete, so I present to you today’s “Period Three To-Do-List”
1.
Tun tun tun… the
dreaded 15 word vocabulary test. So we all sucked it up, and filled our souls
with gumption and took the test.
2.
The journal, a quote
by Seth Godin: “Anxiety is nothing but repeatedly re-experiencing failure in
advance.” There was no discussion about the journal, for we had tons of stuff
to do. This Thursday, make sure to have
your journals, Ms. Lahaise is collecting them… TEN of them, so if you don’t have
them, do free writes
3.
New vocabulary
words were waiting for us on the board, so we had to garner ourselves, stop
talking, and start copying. During these couple of minutes, the milieu of the
students in room 503 was filled with talk and tons of badinage. That teasing
was mostly due to cough, cough… Dale…haha.. he was being Mendacious. Now, we
got to arguing about a word, and usually halcyon Adrian said something extremely
weird. Now, what he said was the paradigm of a malapropism, and I am not going
to repeat it because he is super weird.
4.
The dreaded
multiple choice practice test, Practice Test 3 in our Cliff’s book. It took an
hour, and by the end, we all just wanted to get out of the class.
5.
Kayla did her
first fat paragraph of this semester, she did it on “Ender’s Game” by Orson
Scott Card. Sung Jae did his first on “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins.
They both did a great job, but as usual, Sung’s comments were a little
controversial with the female audience, Oh Sung Jae…
Then the bell rang and
we got to leave goodbye third period. The next scribe is going to be…Ms. Carissa

‘Twas the 23rd day of February when half of the students walked into Ms. Lahaise’s class being considered late, for they were not in their seats on time.
The children all got a talking to in hopes that they would be more prompt in the future.
The queen of the land reminded all the young boys and girls that the EAP test on March 8th WILL NOT be able to be made up!
The queen reminded the children to take the exam seriously, for it determines whether the young ones are “ready” or “not ready” for English 101.
Young Lord Harrison spectacularly sold his book to the class, doing a fabulous job as the first person to sell their book!
(Harrison’s book was Sandman by Neil Gaiman. It’s a great book if you like inception, or dream worlds, since the book is about two realities– one being the dream world and the other being the “real” world. This book is also perfect if you love to have action straight away in the book! Definitely a book to try!)
After the young lord completed his duty, the young boys and girls set off to begin their two practice essays.
They were quite arduous but the children were able to successfully complete it without any complications.
(I have no idea what “theme” I was going for but it was fun to try~ For homework you’ll need your bedfords so don’t forget to take them home! Also don’t forget to bring your Cliff’s books on Monday! If you forget it you won’t be able to do the practice test and will just get a zero for it.)

Today in Ms. Lahaise’s class, we walked in loudly speaking to one another. After a couple minutes of idle chit-chat, Ms. Lahaise started speaking about the AP Test, the CST, and the EAP. She told us that we can bring in our CST score if we scored above Proficient and we can raise our grade a whole letter grade. We then moved onto the EAP, which Ms. Lahaise claimed that was a simple test, and it will result in us having passed English 101, as well as bump up a whole letter grade in this class as well. Ms. Lahaise said that we should all do well on both tests because the tests that we do in this class are much harder than what will be on those tests. After that, we then began our vocabulary test. Once we completed the vocabulary test, we were to silently read.
After what felt like the shortest time, we put our books away and began talking about our Fat Paragraphs. Instead of a written fat paragraph, we are now to vocally sell our book. We have to tell Ms. Lahaise that we have completed one book and then make a date to come up to the front and speak about it, don’t forget to use quotes from the book! When making your speech, do not read off of a piece of paper, try to explain it in your own words. If you are one of those people who are deathly afraid of making speeches, then you may read off of a piece of paper, but know that you cannot do that in college. Remember that the point of this is to persuade the rest of the class to read this book, don’t drone on and on about the book, it’s a short speech! Out of nowhere, the fire alarm went off and we were put on hiatus for a short amount of time.
We then went on to watch our Ted Talk. Today’s Ted Talk was by David Blaine how spoke about holding your breath for 17 minutes. After watching, we wrote in our journals. Right after that, we went on to get our vocabulary words. We received our vocabulary words, and began talking about our Bedford Reader stories, that we were supposed to read for homework, with Muhammad. Since we are so cool and can relate subjects to other topics, we kind of got off topic and started speaking about abortion. We got back on track and discussed rhetorical strategies.
We ended the class by Ms. Lahaise telling us to bring both our Cliff’s Book and our Bedford for Thursday’s class. Our homework is in our Rhetorical Strategies book, do all exercises pertaining to device #24.

We started off by taking the vocabulary test which was followed by doing the journal which was a
quote, “As I grow older, I pay less attention to what men say. I just watch what they do” but had no
discussion following it. The class continued with signing the new paper for which books we are going to
read or are reading at the moment. Unfortunately Mrs. Lahaise announced that we will all be taking
notes in class which will result in more work . To take good notes you must write down what you do
not know! Ahmer wondered what we should do if we find everything important in which we are taking
notes on. Should we write everything down? Mrs Lahaise stated that you should jot down key concepts
that you will need later. An example of what you should jot down is writing down what you think you
will need to know for later in the discussions is the rhetorical device. You should be an active reader
instead of just listening to the discussion (passive). The notes can be in however format we want it to
be. Cornell notes is a good example of what we can do. Another example is “mind mapping” which is
when you write something down and draw webs coming out of center bubble which contain the notes.
As we digressed from the note topic for a second we talked about how we should always write an
outline for essays especially for the AP test. Most people will take their notes close the book and then
they are done. When you take your notes you should go home and read your notes and even type the
notes so you can access different parts of your brain. The big key thing you have to do is summarize the
notes at the end. The other key is to review the notes the night that they were taken so that you can
remember them better. To take notes in class we would need a workbook. A composition notebook just
for notes in class is a great idea Random people would be picked from the roll on a random day for a
random note to be shown. The real purpose of the scribe is for people who are absent. A tertiary
purpose is for the people who are zoned out. When you write a scribe it is more general but when you
write your own notes it is more personal and you will learn more when you go back and read your notes.
We went on after this to discuss the journal. Eddie had said that when you listen to someone don’t
believe them fully until they decide to act on it because actions speak louder than words. The class
continued on a discussion about politicians. We went back to talking about the notes yet again. Miss
Lahaise said that when we had class discussions everyone had something interesting to say and we
cannot remember it because we didn’t take notes but if we did then we could go back and talk about a
topic we visited a month ago. We proceeded to take out our Bedford Readers and talk about the
homework assignment which was to write 5 things about cause and effect which is a rhetorical device
because it is considered a mode of writing. You can use basically write about anything you think is the
cause or effect of the prompt as long as you can defend whatever you are saying with proof claim and
proof! We did not get to the Inauguration speech today but hopefully we will get to it next time!

We started our class with a TED talk called: Why do crack
dealers still live at home? The TED wasn’t about why they live at home entirely
but about the life of a crack dealer and it wasn’t a good one. It was like
working at McDonalds. After we did our journal we did silent reading. We
digressed a bit and talked about the book 1984
which is where the saying ‘Big Brother’ came from. After our talk about things
not related to English, we started to discuss the TED talk. The main point:
Don’t work at McDonalds or be a drug dealer it sucks. One of Steven Levitt’s
,the man who did the TED talk, many purposes was to show that drug dealing
isn’t that glamorous and that it is straight up business. His audience was
teenagers or the kids who live in the city according to us but Ms. Lahaise said
that we were NOT his audience at all. Our handy dandy teacher assistant is
going to pass out our Cliffs test. We didn’t do very well on this test and we
are going to take another test in a couple of weeks. Our handy dandy teacher
assistant is telling us about his knowledge of gangs. Woo. We are going over
our tests and we are having trouble finding out where to start. Oh and if we
are going to BS then we better be good at it. We should also try to put
examples in the books words because our words tend to confuse people. Tone is how the author feels about the
subject and attitude is how the
author expresses it- Jasmin. This is a very good way to explain the difference
between the two. Also for our handy dandy teacher assistant we need to write a
lot better because he cannot read our writing but during the AP test we can
write messy, it’s okay. Phrase of the day by Brian: Can you not? Two- three weeks from today is our next
Cliffs test: the 5th of March. It is the same stuff just a
different test, the pages are 65-73 in our cliffs book. Also Ms. Lahaise hates
us.

Hello everyone! This is Jasmin(: And I have the fantastic pleasure of being the scribe for today. What does this mean? I paid attention to EVERYONE and EVERYTHING in Ms. Lahaises’ third period (her favorite ) Advanced Placement Language and Composition course. (Im not sure if all that is supposed to be capitalized..) Anyways! So today was a 2:00pm dismissal, which meant all class periods were cut short. At the end of nutrition the class rushed in like an excited crowd at a concert. Why? Maybe it’s because it is Valentines Day <3 <3 aweee!! Love is in the air! Yeah, next. So unfortunately Ms. Lahaise was absent today and we were all highly confused as to whether there was supposed be a scribe today or not, considering the decision was not posted last night. However, I was kindly notified in class that I was the chosen one. Yay! And we continued to chat. While our chattering was going on the sub kindly and very sarcastically repeated the phrase "I'll wait", implying she wanted us to settle down. Did most of us listen? No. But eventually we shut our mouths to listen to what the woman had to say. She introduced herself as Mrs. Hammond, and exclaimed that Ms. Lahaise left her a lesson plan, intending for us to do a Free-write journal and silent reading after for the rest of the period. Luckily her important announcement was written in BIG letters right on the front board, but we thank Mrs. H anyways for making sure(: Also, she explained how Ms. Lahaise emphasized NO CHATTER DURING SILENT READING. Were those her exact words? Not sure. But that was the plan for the day. We commenced with our studies, and there were no further instructions for the rest of the period. Once the bell rang. We all left.

I'm not exactly sure how because the words have not been given to us, but I'm sure all of you dedicated students will email Ms. Lahaise about that if you're concerned(: Also, Thursday you must bring you Bedford and Rhetorical Devices book.

Everyone walked in to class as usual and began working on a
journal on the board. (Notice: You must be in your seat when the bell rings or
you will be marked absent.) Once we finished our journals, we did some silent reading
until everyone was done. Ms. Lahaise passed around a sheet to write the title
of our book down that we will be using for our Fat Paragraphs. Never fear, if
you have yet to commit to a book, you will be allowed to write down your choice
on Monday. Or if you’d like to change books, you can go in to see Ms. Lahaise
to change it. We spent a large amount of time discussing books we find
interesting to give the rest of the class an idea of what we’d like read up on
and the requirements they need to meet. “Foofoo” books are not to be used. They
should be adult/young adult books that are acceptable for our age level.
Examples of books are: Dracula, Hunger Games, Void, The Enders Games, Martian Chronicles,
Watchmen, Good Omens, and Freakonomics. After listening to each other’s ideas,
we switched to sharing our journals. It seemed as if though Samuel Johnson’s
quote was reflected on more than E.A. Poe’s. The topic was debated upon for a
bit whether confidence was the first thing needed or not to achieve your goal
as well as the type of motivation required to achieve it. As we were
transitioning to a new topic, Ms. Lahaise made a point that our discussion was
relatable to our AP test because we used our experiences and observations to
analyze and respond to the quote. We are to BRING OUR CLIFF’S BOOK AND RHETORICAL DEVICE BOOK ON MONDAY. We are
getting our Terms Test back and we’re going to go over each answer. Next, we
began talking about Enumeratio in our rhetorical devices. We digressed slightly
into which English class to take next year and which would be appropriate for
our learning types. We got back on topic, expanding on what enumeratio is and
its use in the AP test. To pass the rhetorical device essay, you must pull out
and analyze the rhetorical device. If we use it in our essay as well, it bumps
up your grade (for obvious reasons). Our homework will be posted on the calendar
(device #20 as well as an analysis of Obama’s Inauguration speech).

So today we got out early! It was a 12:33 dismissal day yay! And it was raining too
Anywho…
Everyone entered Mrs. Lahaises class questioning whether or not we needed our rhetorical devices book or the Bedford. She pondered for a moment then said we didn’t. we sighed with relief as we took our seats. Muhammed then told us all to be quiet J Mrs. Lahaise then told us that she can barely talk because she’s losing her voiceL She then told us that we were going to watch a ted talk again, a continuation from where we left off. However, since some people suggested to start the ted talk over, she did. We listened to a ted talk that had to do with a woman that had a brother that had schizophrenia. And she mentioned how she also had a seizure and was technically “an infant trapped in a woman’s body”. The woman then pulled out a real brain and started elaborating on the left and right hemispheres. The right hemisphere thinks in pictures and learns through the movement of our bodies (all about the present moment). The left hemisphere is able to take the details out of the present moment, categorizes it, compares it to what we’ve learned (thinks in language). She then continued explaining how and when she got her stroke, going into further detail. Jose started falling asleep….tisktisk. Anyways, throughout the video there were a few giggles going back and forth, due to the way the woman in the video was talking hahaha. Our assignment when the ted talk was over was to come up with only 6 words that define the enter video. There were many different examples, like Allison’s “lost her brain, gained more knowledge”. We then went into discussion of whether or not it was easy or hard to come up with 6 words rather than writing a journal about the Ted…and after another discussion about what the message of her speech was. Maxine concluded that the main message of the Ted was euphoria. Then Mrs. Lahaise started passing out our homework that we turned in last time; Our State of the Union Rhetorical Devices! Muhammed, being Muhammed, then started a discussion about the speech itself. We discussed the different rhetorical devices found in Obama’s speech, and whether or not he delivered his speech well. The class then finished and everyone walked joyously out of the classroom(:
Today, as we all walked into class Ms. Lahaise and I were talking about how the minute bell should come back because so many students are showing up late. She then proceeded to talk about grading and how the fat paragraphs aren’t being added to the 1st semester because most of them were bad. She also talked about the blogs and said that we need to post the links to where we got our information from and also to analyze, not summarize them. Then a teacher showed up, asking for an extension cord, which Jose so readily agreed to retrieve. When she left we went over the fact that it is okay to digress from our sentences and write about something else in our blogs. Ms. Lahaise also told us that our grades on Jupiter Grades should be pretty accurate. Right after that she realized that we were going to switch seats, but then we got into a conversation about losing or throwing out our schedule sheets and how we should just get them signed and turned in. After that discussion we finally changed seats. Surprisingly people were in seats that they had been in before, and Ms. Lahaise said that some people would need to be moved. Then we finally took the vocab test and did a freewrite when we finished. We got the new words and Mohammad told the class that we would get an extra point for typing up the homework he would give us. Then the bell rang and we reluctantly left the class to go to 4th period.

Today
in class, our amazing teacher had recuperated from her case of food poisoning that
she had attained from eating a delicious Portobello mushroom sandwich. The
class was overwhelmed with joy of the presence of our amazing teacher!
Okay so I walked in class and got my materials out, then Ron and Sunjae informed
me that I am the scribe for the day -.- at the beginning of class some students
asked if the grades on jupitergrades.com were accurate and Ms. Lahaise replied no and that she will get them done. She
also said that on Monday we are going to go over what she’s looking for in a
blog. Ms. Lahaise goes on to inform us about certain difficulties with the
website engendered by the new theme and that if we couldn’t post our scribes,
we should email it to her. Then Dale or Eddie made a comment about how they
were on television for a hockey game I think and one of them brought up a
slurpie and I got thirsty D: she then passed out our vocab quiz and assigned us
a journal on the board to do after we we’re done. When everybody finished we
were about to begin going over the homework in the Bedford reader with her
until she came upon some realization (I forgot) and handed the class over to
Muhammad ^^ we were about to do a ‘Socratic seminar’ which is a useful
technique applied in college to help students remember concepts and theories. we
then faced a conundrum over the circle concept-there was an inner and outer circle
where the people in the inner circle were the most active and interactive ones
while the people of the outer circle weren’t as talkative and such- of the
seminar since all our tables were in lines. There was a debate over whether we
should be in a circle or not until Muhammad nullified the argument and required
all of us to participate. We exercised this technique on one of the stories we
read for homework, “Black Men on Public Space.” Many students analyzed a
variety of rhetorical devices in this excerpt work- far too many for me too
list at that. Jk Ill list a few but you gotta find them yourselves:
parenthesis, sarcasm, conduplicatio, allusion, imagery, description, metaphor,
understatement, anecdote, litote, analogy, cliffhangar, metabasis, and distinctio.
There was a bunch of other stuff, but I don’t
remember or didn’t write them down. Well during the occurrence of the seminar,
many interesting events took place: Ramtin was talking I think and Ms. Lahaise
threatened to make him sit next to her(which isn’t that bad); Denise and Isabel
paid our class a visit to give Faye a notification which sort of agitated our
teacher because of the manner it was done in; Sunjae made yet another
controversial comment pertaining to women xD he brought up the seemingly random
topic of why women like gluteus Maximus openings instead of nice guys, Jasmine
then replies with her description of what girls like in guys which was quite
interesting (>:D muwhahahahaha) yea and then the class realized we had
digressed from the original topic and Ms. Lahaise nudged Muhammad to get the
class back on track. And that was the conclusion of our first Socratic seminar.
Ms. Lahaise then assigns us homework to watch the State of the Union speech
delivered by President Barack Obama and an assignment to analyze 7 rhetorical
devices-advised by Muhammad- used in the speech. She brings up that if you can’t
find anything, to always go back to logos, pathos, and ethos. She also informed
us that fallacies are frequently used in politics. We then watched a TED Talk
by Jill Bolton Taylor on the topic of the human brain. It was very informative
on what damaging the left hemisphere of your brain could do to you (you’re practically baked). Then the bell rang and she told the class we’d finish it on Monday. Oh and
we were also instructed to write 6 words that summarize the whole TED Talk
after we finish watching it. And finally, she tells us to bring our Bedford and
Rhetorical devices book on Monday and to leave our cliffs book at home.
We walked in to class today and had Miss Gold as our
substitute teacher. We sat down and she informed us we would be writing another
defend, qualify, or challenge essay today. The class protested because we wrote
this type of essay the day before, but Ms. Gold ignored the class and continued
giving instructions. She told us the last time we had her that we would be
writing an essay today that related to James Baldwin. We were informed we would
have 40 minutes to write the essay. Ms. Gold also emphasized that we must make
an outline before starting to write because if we don’t finish the essay in
time the outline would give her an idea of what the essay was supposed to be
about, but since not everybody remembered how to write an outline, Ms. Gold
instructed us to do the best we can. Ms. Gold also said that if Ms. Lahaise is
not here on Thursday then she will give us an outline strategy and we will
continue working on the essay. While we were writing our outlines and essays, Ms.
Gold told us about the proper way to write an outline. At the end of class she
collected our work. She expected us to have completed the outline and written
at least one paragraph.
Reminder: The vocabulary test has been moved to Thursday, and
we have to read pages 205-207, pages 212-216, complete
Questions on Meaning # 1 & 2, as well as Questions on Strategy #1, 2 &
5 also by Thursday.
