    Komeno’s scribe post Thursday, May 15, 2012

Today we did not do much, as we only met for an hour.  We started class with a journal about the consensus of the word family. The journal was “What is family?  Can a family be made-up of “non-traditional” members?  Is faily important?.  Why/ not?”  The majority of the class agreed that family is basically those you love and they love you back, no matter if they are related to you or not.  We came to the conclusion that relates are in fact different from family.  Relatives you can not choose, however, family you can.  Later, Ms. Lahaise talked about our new book that we will be receiving on Monday, Cannery Row by John Steinbeck.  We ended the class with our first “fat paragraph” presentation; Francis shared with the class his book of choice, A Separate Piece.  The story was based around guilt and one friend’s struggle with confessing his wrongdoing.

We finally watched Mario’s TED about Larry Smith. At first it didn’t work. Then we switched devices and watched it on Ms. Lahaise’s computer. Then we did a journal on it. Some of the everyone either hated it or liked it. Then we talked about the difference between interest and passion

    We started
off class by turning in the homework, which were the lit circle roles for
chapter 14 and Aphorisms of August. Ms. Lahaise then told us that our class has
grown and we are a better class than we were in September. After the homework
was collected, we watched a really long TED talk by Sherry Turckle. When the
TED was over we wrote a journal and had silent reading after. Then we discussed
the TED talk and chapter 14 of The Secret Life of Bees.  People were being mean to each other so Ms. Lahaise
took back the comment about us changing from September. We couldn’t get into
our lit circle groups today because there wasn’t enough time left so we
continued to have our discussion. In our discussion we talked about the differences
in the book and movie and if you thought Lily should’ve went back to T. Ray. Someone
wanted to know why T. Ray went to go find Lily when he hated her. The class
decided that Lily was the only family he had left, she was the closest person
to Deborah and she was his possession.   Chopin pronounced Deborah’s name wrong so Ms.
Lahaise told us to go to Google, type in I Love Lucy: Language and watch the
video. We’re not going to have a vocabulary test tomorrow instead we will be
writing an essay on our book. Then Ms. Lahaise said “One day, all of our
parents are going to die” and that’s how we ended the class.

We walked into class, it was a beautiful day, we were telling some jokes as Mrs. Lahaise was getting things together. We got new vocabulary words today and watched a TED as a journal. The TED talk was by Frank Warren. After the TED, we wrote for our journals and talked about it as a class. Next, Mrs. Lahaise gave us classwork, and we had to come up with As many Aphorisms by August on our own. So that technically meant we had to go through chapters 4 through 13 and find as many as we could. This wasn’t an easy task, and seeing as the class didn’t do so well, she left it as Homework due MONDAY, and we had to come up with a MINIMUM of 20 examples in the book. Also, Our Literature Circle roles for Chapter 14 are due MONDAY aswell.

As soon as we walked in Ms.Lahaise had us turn in our homework. As soon as we did that we had to take our vocabulary quiz.We got labels put on the monitors now because apparently 2 monitors went missing.Apparently we make labels with label markers.(Michael didn’t know that) I am happy to say our wonderful teacher has been feeling better! At the end of the test we all ended up receiving pretty good scores.Ms.Lahaise is pushing chapter 14 to monday, so do good on Sobel’s essay. We discussed chapters 12 and 13 and we all agreed that everyone enjoyed this chapter. It had alot of unexpected twist. Our teacher would like us to keep away from summarizing things and analyzing them more.On Thursday we will get new words and a TED. We must bring our books(The Secret Life of Bees) to class because ewe will be occupying them for an activity that we will be doing on thursday. We ended up taking our journals back home because they didn’t fit in our files anymore.*** DO NOT LOSE THEM WE ARE GONNA USE THEM FOR SOMETHING LATER ON!!

As last time our scribe was absent so me as a great person decided to take over(:
As soon as we walked into the class Ms.Lahaise just on a T.E.D. The speaker was Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs.
We did a journal on the T.E.D talk and followed it with silent reading. after our Journal discussion we all agreed that we shouldn’t judge a person by there jobs.(etc.)
Ms. Lahaise told Michael to contact her in 20 years to discuss the level of happiness he is in with his choice of job.(Everyone should call her in 20 years:P)
Luna talked to her mom about the misuse of the word “retarded” and i am pleased to say her mother understands where Ms.Lahaise is coming from.Just be cautious on how you use it.(Use denotation instead of connotation)
We got a new set of vocabulary words.(ask to copy them)
She recommends to take Lanf. instead of Lit. next year.
TALK TO HER TO SEE WHAT CLASS SHE RECOMMENDS TO YOU/OR INFORMATION ON THE CLASSES!!!
*** She is abandoning the book “Into the Wild” so if your not going to finish reading it and use it as a fat paragraph then return it this thursday***
Last but not least poor Ms. Lahaise was so tiered she began to jumble words around.
The bell rang and everyone went there separate ways.

April 30,2012 So today Ms.Lahaise wasn’t here today. (hope you feel better Ms.Lahaise). So we walked and sat down and our substitute (which I can’t remember what his name was) took role, and 5 people or more were absent. So on the board was our agenda
    1. Free write
    2. Silent Reading
    3. Get into your lit circle groups and discuss the previous homework. (which for all of you who don’t know it was CHapters 12&13.
So the class proceeded quietly to reading and doing our journals. The substitute got a business phone call and proceeded to explain what it was about, while continuing to mumble to himself.   Then about an hour later we got into our lit circle groups discussed the chapter somewhat, and hopefully changed roles. So today I think was a very productive day hopefully. TOMORROW VOCAB TEST. 12:33 DISMISSAL PERIODS 1,3,5,. SERIOUSLY. :)

April 26, 2012As soon as we walked into class, Mrs. Lahaise had Tristan collect the homework (chapter 11 Lit circles for The Secret Life of Bees). After that, we watched a TED (here is the link: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/bryan_stevenson_we_need_to_talk_about_an_injustice.htm . Mrs. Lahaise told us to look after his rhetoric which is the art of persuasion (something we should know from our Utopia projects). After watching the Ted for about 25 minutes, we did some silent reading.
RANDOM FACT: numbers 1-9 are always spelled out, and 10 and up is written as the actual number.

We then discussed the TED and our opinions on it:

-Michael thought Jimmy was the one who got Bryan energetic to write the letters that he sent to court and he was happy that Bryan took this action.-Mario thought the same as Michael but wanted to add on a little bit. He mentioned that when Jimmy saw a black man being a lawyer, it touched his heart and it was shown when he thanked Bryan for it. It was as if the thank you that Jimmy gave to Bryan was from the whole community as well. Mario also mentioned that you have to be brave no matter what race you are.
-Gerrie said she agreed with Bryan’s questioning on whether or not it was fair for people to die because of the crimes they have committed.-Raz said that without identity, we’d be judged on the actions of our past. -Mrs. Lahaise realized that it is sometimes hard to do the right thing.-Andrew connected this TED to Zach from The Secret Life of Bees. He also connected it to that people know what matters, but they choose not to. For example, Stevenson made a point that the Justice treats the rich and guilty a whole lot better than the poor and innocent. People KNOW that this is unfair, but they choose not to make it important because it doesn’t effect their lives. ~His purpose: He wants everyone to be treated fairly. However, more importantly, it is to tell the TED society to be more courageous and do the right thing, even if it might be difficult. ~WHAT’S THE POINT OF PURPOSE?~ The point of purpose is so that we understand the reasoning behind things, and when you’re given a bunch of information, you need to know what important things to pull out. If you can’t grasp purpose, then there’s no point of reason what your reading or watching what you’re watching.**REMEMBER** There’s a difference between purpose and message.~His audience: The white men with the power and money in the audience. After our discussion about the TED, we talked about Maslow’s Triangle (here is the link: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/60/Maslow’s_Hierarchy_of_Needs.svg/450px-Maslow’s_Hierarchy_of_Needs.svg.png&imgrefurl=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow’s_hierarchy_of_needs&h=338&w=450&sz=51&tbnid=K5toRCKOO_dbpM:&tbnh=90&tbnw=120&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmaslow’s%2Btriangle%26tbm%3Disch%26tbo%3Du&zoom=1&q=maslow’s+triangle&docid=KIpM-2Cgq3WupM&hl=en&sa=X&ei=5i2aT9P2NKe62gXG–WJDw&ved=0CDoQ9QEwAg&dur=603 ) Mrs. Lahaise said that it related to all the books we’ve read. You cant get to the top unless you’ve met the basic needs, such as water, sleep, etc. For example, if you’re wondering where your next meal is coming from, how are you going to wonder about problem solving? You can’t because at that moment in time, you don’t care…you care about getting you’re food.Raz mentioned that this triangle relates to The Secret Life of Bees because without the followers, you cant get to the queen bees.Francis said this related to the book we are reading because Lily found a home, got a good meal, and now she is steady and will grow from there!Andrew said Lily was at the third stage because she is becoming friends, and having relationships with a few different people, and is feeling a lot more comfortable. At about 2:30, Tristan passed back out the homework so that we could get into our groups and discuss the chapters. After meeting with the groups that were the same, we went back to our original groups to discuss it once more.Everyone then went back to their seats and we discussed as a class about the book.Raz was the illuminator so he said when August stopped her chores with the bees because of May’s death, it was a major turning point in the chapter because it just goes to show how bad the situation really was if August actually had to stop her hobby. We discussed that May died because she was tired of holding onto everyone’s problems and she wants able to filter everything out.Bad things happen to everyone, but its just about how you deal with it. May didn’t know how to deal with it.That was the end of classNext scribe is Gerrie!

As we got into class today, there was a journal written on the board. The first thing we did was write down the quote which was “All war is a symptom of man’s failure as animal.” – John Steinbeck. After we finished writing the journal we read for a short time and then closed our books.
We then started discussing our journal. A few points from students:

-Andrew said that it brought him back to the utopia projects, he also said something along the lines of, no amount of technology can get rid of the animal characteristic.

-Cecilia came up with a great quote “For a man to fail as an animal what are we considered to be as humans?”

After the journal we moved on to chapter 8 in The Secret Life of Bees. Ms. Lahaise wrote the roles of the bees explained in the chapter on the board and we had to name the function of each role and what would happen if they were not done. The roles for the bees were

    - The Queen
    - Nest Builder
    - Field Bees
    - Mortician Bees
    - Nurse Bees
    - Drones
    - Attendants
    - Scout Bees

When we had all completed this we shared what we thought the roles were with the class. Then Ms. Lahaise brought up pictures on the Smart board of honey combs. We also looked at pictures of different kinds of bees. Once we had finished looking at all the pictures we were to think of which characters in the book represented the roles of the bees. When everyone was done we shared our answers with the class. Some people thought of great out of the box answers! Most of us had similar answers as to who played what role.

After we finished talking about The Secret Life of Bees, Ms Lahaise began to talk about Cst’s. They are coming up soon! So we looked over some review questions and passages to just get an idea of what we are in for. The Cst is literal according to questions such as the manual ones, they are about facts and you do not have to think very above and beyond for those types of questions, but for the ones that come from literature or poems try to think a little more about them. They are not as literal.

Next we got into our literature circle groups, one group which happened to be my group, discussion directors, ended up with much more people than it should have had. So remember to always make sure your group all knows which roles you are doing! After we discussed with our groups we went back to our seats. There wasn’t much time left in the class but we were able to get a little discussion in. That was all for today! Have a nice weekend everyone. :)

    Tuesday, April 17, 2012

I thought today would be like any other Tuesday, but when we walked into class
there were SMART Response clickers on all of our desks. We began the class like
normal, with everyone reviewing the vocabulary words at the last
minute. At the beginning of the year Mrs. Lahasie said she wanted a paperless
classroom, and these clickers meant we wouldn’t have to use our own paper to
take the test! Since it was our first time using the clickers, there were a few
problems. To use the clickers we had to put in our birthday and since some people
had the same birthdays Mrs. Lahaise came up with a new system.  To use the clicker, we have to use our school
ID numbers, which is our birthday followed by three arbitrary numbers (Ignore
the F or M on your ID card). Make sure you have your numbers written down or
memorized because you are going to need them next time we take a vocabulary
test and without them you won’t be able to take it! P.S. If your birthday is between January and September,
you don’t have to put a “0” before your month number.

While waiting for others to finish their test, we had to write a journal on the following quote… ”If you want truly to
understand something, try to change it” – Kurt Lewin

Once everyone finished their test, our scores popped
up on our clickers! Now we don’t have to wait until the grades are posted
online to know what we got. Time was running out so we got our new vocabulary
words and once we got the last definition, the bell rang.

Don’t forget to read chapter 8 of The Secret Life of Bees and do at least 5
items for your literature circle role!

    April 16, 2012
Today we walked into class and Ms. Lahaise showed us a TED
talk that was said to be inspirational. The TED was by Diana Nyad. After the
TED we did a journal and then had some time for silent reading. After silent
reading we discussed the TED which Michael thought was inspiring. Others thought
that her perseverance was inspiring. Hamington related the TED to the Titanic
movie. Through the TED we concluded that regret is waste of energy and that we
should prep for something that seems challenging to us.

After our discussion on our journals we got into our
literature circles but in the way we did on Thursday. After a few minutes in
our groups we got back as a class and discussed it. Andrew was saying that the
quote in the beginning relates to the chapter in many ways. The quote is mainly
about the stereotypes there are. The stereotypes that we hear now come from
historical times but over the years we have added a negative take on them, they
also come from fear and hatred.

Lily and Zach’s relationship is doomed to fail because he cannot
be seen with her. There are other factors affecting the relationship such as
the time period and the racism that goes around. We think that Lily doesn’t see
the color of people’s skin because she was raised by Rosaleen and she knows
    better than that.

Ms. Lahaise told us not to connect things to cartoons
outside of this class because it shows that we don’t think. We should use
things that show that we know a lot when we were don’t know much in the point
of our lives that were in.

The next scribe is Jocelyn. Have fun!

At the beginning of class Raz and  Mario were messing around and ended up breaking Mario’s rosary sending the beads flying every where in the classroom. Since i didn’t want to Ms. Lahaise to slip on the beads i started picking up the beads and then everyone started helping me out. She said that she was quite impressed to see how nice we’ve become, helping out a friend in need, which made me wonder were we really that mean last semester?

Anyway for the people who were at the blood drive they will not be able to make up any if the work that they missed.

Then out of nowhere Ms. Lahaise announced that there was a pop quiz on the secret life of bees which really threw everyone off. The first question that she asked was really funny because almost half the class couldn’t remember the answer. (Because this was a quiz i can’t write it down on the scribe post sorry.)

Afterwards we discussed next years Advanced Composition class some more. She reiterated what classes would be appropriate for which college (i.e. community college, Cal state/UC, Private). She has 5 seniors who will not be walking on stage during graduation because of taking Advanced Composition. She has 60 students signed up but she needs to get it down to 40. New students as 12 graders will have a much tougher time because they did not have Ms. Lahaise. There will be a meeting for Advanced Comp on Monday for the students who have not had her before. Current students do not need to attend! You will take a test the first day of school on the summer reading. Expository has no summer assignment.

After the lecture we were given a quote on the board since we watched a TED on Monday. So here it is for those who were absent. “Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.”—Eleanor Roosevelt

We didn’t discuss the journal and went straight into our lit circle roles. She asked the class if they had any suggestions of how to make the class as paperless as possible. Someone suggested that everything will be turned in to the homework drop and it will be the responsibility of the students to remember what they wrote. Next she decided to do something new with the lit circles where all of the discussion directors get together in a group, all connecters get together in a group, and so on. Each role will then choose two items from the whole group and present them to the class. It seemed to work out really well. Before our class discussion we got back in our original lit circle groups and switched roles randomly.

ALSO REALLY IMPORTANT FOR THOSE WHO WEREN’T HERE YOUR ROLES ARE AS FOLLOWED: Tristan- connector, Kathy-illustrator, Arthur-connector, Adrianna- discussion director

The class discussion progressed really well and I think our little experiment today will continue for other lit circle roles. Ms. Lahiase pulled out some quotes to illuminate upon such as page 83 last paragraph, page 87 second to last paragraph, page 104 last paragraph, page 113 half way down and the second to last paragraph. Monday HW will be lit circle for chapter 7

Being a Tuesday it was for the most part an uneventful and routine day. We had about 5 minutes to study and then were given our vocabulary test. This will (hopefully) be our last vocabulary test using paper. Next time we will start using the “clickers” to take vocabulary tests on the smart board. Ms.Lahaise will be explaining in greater detail tomorrow during class on how things will go. Once more step towards a paperless class!

After finishing the test were given a quote by Emerson to do as our journal
“When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find out it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers.”

Once all tests were collected by Ms.Lahaise we were given our new vocabulary words for next week. Please see a fellow student to obtain the new vocabulary.

Do not forget we still have homework due Thursday! It is to do our lit circle roles for chapters 5 and 6 however we only need to do 3 items instead of the usual 5.

The next scribe will be Chopin. Bonne Chance!

Today we started with a TED talk with the disclaimer by Ms. Lahaise that most people with not understand it. The TED was about technology and how it will better our future.
Andrew pointed out about the Arab Spring where Twitter was used for Democratic uprsings in the Arab region.
Michael took out the fact that we’re finally being able to answer the questions that are currently unsolvable.
Francis said that the main point of the TED was to start off with bad things and going onto show that we should actually have a positive outlook on life.Mario added that abundance is our future.
Hammy chimed in with we take things too seriously and thinks it’s the news media’s fault because of sensational stories.
We then talked about the presentation style which was it started off with the negative to catch our attention and then dug into positives right after.
After finishing our talk about the TED Ms. lahaise passed back Chapter 4 Lit Circles so that we can start our class discussion.
It is finally admitted that this is a chick book because of the lack of a strong male character.
We had a seat change today.
Then we wrote down the first things that came to mind when we thought of the months May, June, and August.
The homework will be chapter 5-6 and a bit more that will be posted online.

-Ms. Lahaise explained the difference between an authorized and unauthorized biography.
-Chris McCandless went on his “adventure” because he was upset with his parents when he found out he was the product of an affair.
-Ms. Lahaise would prefer us not to read too far ahead in The Secret Life Of Bees
-I think she gave us new words ?

  • Haminton Lam

    Haminton Lam, 3/26/12
To start off the day, Lahaise made a promise to the class, especially Arthur, that we will watch the movie version of ‘Into the Wild’ on Thursday. Lucy brought up that she had Ms. Gold as her homeroom teacher today and how Ms. Gold was overly excited when she thought our class finished ‘Into the Wild’, but we didn’t so she was let down. Mrs. Lahaise also mentioned that you should be checking your emails because she might talk about scribe posts and how many times you’ve been the scribe, to balance out those who’ve only been scribe once and those four times. Anyway, we didn’t have a journal today so we immediately started off with a TED by Beau Lotto. Beau is an interesting speaker because he began his speech with interactive diagrams for the audience to observe. He said that the ability to see color is the simplest thing the brain can do. But it is also essential for survival, especially for animals, because if any prey is colorblind or unable to see in the dark, they have greater odds of dying since they can’t detect predators that camouflage.
Sensory information that falls onto our eyes is basically useless according to Beau. Our eyes apparently tend to adapt to the sight we’ve seen so he uses a great example of showing two pictures– both with a white circle in the center. The top picture contains all green on the left side and all red on the right side while the bottom picture shows a reflection (left and right) of the same desert landscape. He told us to stare at the white circle between the red and green for 30 seconds and when we’d stare down at the bottom picture containing the desert, the color mood of both sides of the desert would appear to be the colors red and green. He also showed something really awesome: he took a diamond shaped plastic figure and spun it one direction and told us to blink constantly and when doing so, you’d actually see it spinning in another direction. Another experiment was conducted in which bees would recognize the correct flower despite the change in color.
A crazy idea was brought into account when he said that color can be translated into sound or music. I was a bit impressed when he showed an art piece of a 6 year old developing a symphonic relationship between color and music. To end his presentation he juxtaposed two squares consisting of 25 circles inside each of them. One square was purple consisting of yellow circles while the other was yellow consisting of purple ones. He placed a sheet of light behind each of them to illuminate each of the middle nine circles of one square to mock the other square. So the middle nine circles of either square was an orange color while the squares themselves remained to each be yellow and purple. When he unveiled the cover however, the circles were shown to be clearly different from each other. We then did our TED journals and silent reading.
As Lahaise was flipping through the homework today, she mentioned that the Lit. Squares were mediocre work. So, everyone do more quality work next time! But anyway, we had our TED discussion and the first to speak was Andrew and he didn’t really enjoy the TED because he ‘expected’ everything from it and thus was not so impressed. Mario brought up a connection with Shultz that we only see a certain amount of things and don’t pay attention to everything else. He also brings up that everything in life may be a dream, and nothing is real. Raz agrees with Mario to an extent but he disagrees because Mario is going a little overboard and is being too literal with the topic. Arthur mentions that we are all over thinking everything and that we should just live and die, no further questions. Afterwards, we had a discussion on how amazing the symphonic piece was and Lahaise finally realized the music creates a different sound/pitch as it hits a different color. Raz was reminded of a friend of his who took philosophy class and how his friend’s professor dresses in crazy colors– not matching at all.
Soon, the teacher passed back the Lit. Squares and said not to get your hopes up if you receive a star because it means that she didn’t check it yet since she didn’t have enough time. If you didn’t get a star then you either received full credit or half credit. We got to our Lit. Square groups to discuss and alternate our roles.
Finally, we began our discussion with ‘The Secret Life of Bees’ and how each quote at the beginning of each chapter is very important. There was a huge dispute about whether Lily’s life was worse with T. Ray than her current life. Cecilia and Andrew had a dispute: Cecilia said that Lily’s life was fortunate without T. Ray, but Andrew says that life can’t be defined or decided in an hour’s span. We somehow got indulged into talking about how the average human lifespan is greater today than in the past so we get married at a later age (around 30). To end the class period, Lahaise SAID IT’S MANDATORY TO TAKE MARGIN NOTES IN THE BOOK AND HIGHLIGHT TEXT because it is useless just highlighting words when you can easily forget. For instance, Lahaise had done so three years ago and she doesn’t remember her ideas. CHAPTER 4 LIT SQUARE ROLES WILL BE DUE THIS THURSDAY AS WELL AS A VOCAB QUIZ, so don’t expect spring vacation just yet. Everyone have an awesome spring break and the next scribe is Cecilia!

    Francis Carow, Scribe Post 3/22/12.
I am a little late but I did remember for the next class meeting. The first thing we did when we got into class was we took the vocab test that we were supposed to take on Tuesday, but since Ms. Lahaise wasn’t there we couldn’t. After we did Silent Reading up until about 1:50. We then got new vocab words for next week. From there Arthur, Ms. Lahaise, and a couple of other students got into a discussion about the difference between a GED and a CHSPE. A CHSPE supposedly lets you graduate from high school early, but still receive a high school diploma as if you remained in high school the whole time. Hopefully we will be able to confirm which one is which next class meeting.
We then did a TED talk on Adam Savage from Mythbusters. His TED talk was very relatable to David Blaine’s, in that he was very determined to his goals and tried to go for 100% perfection, following the mood of determination and perseverance. He also concluded his talk saying that it wasn’t about the destination of your journey, but the journey itself.
On this day we did little discussion on the Secret Life of Bees. We collected Lit Square rolls and switched for our next assignment due on Monday. We had a brief discussion about the book in general and that was about it for the day. Ms. Lahaise said she didn’t get to anything she wanted us to do that day. Oh well.
The next scribe will be Mr. Haminton Nam Lam

Hello classmates, today for period 5 we had a substitute teacher, instead of the usual Paige Lahaise, that went by the name of Mr. Cowan. Apparently i was the only one today that had asked him what his name was. He told us that students asking for his name determines his decision on how much he respects the class. Anyways he started off by taking role and then started talking about Winston Churchill for a few minutes and told us to write a journal on one of Churchill’s quotes. “History will be kind to me for I intend to write.” - Winston Churchill. For the rest of the period
we had silent reading and then the bell rang…

The next Scribe is Komeno because he’s such a nice person.

Tristan “The Best Scribe Their Is” Alexander
Hello period 5. We did a lot today Monday 19-MAR-12. First we did our silent reading. Once we did that, our journal was “Self pity is easily the most destructive of non-pharmaceutic narcotics, it is addictive, gives momentary pleasure and separates the victim from reality”-John Gardener. We did not discuss the journal, so we proceeded to discuss “The Secret Life of Bees”. Ms. Lahaise conveniently had a bag of grits, so she put some on the floor and Raz, Arthur, and Jeffery got on their knees and endured pain for about a minute. Fun stuff. We did not assign lit roles last Thursday, so today we just had a class discussion. The main topics we went over were the sad parts of the books, the differences between the 1960s and now, and some other things. Classmates said that to them the saddest parts were Lily’s mother dying, the grits punishment given to her by her father, the fact that she has to hide her mother’s things from her father, and T. Ray blaming Lily for her mom’s death the day she started first grade. We also talked about the civil rights movement that was going on then. People who weren’t white were discriminated against and treated very poorly and actually in places in the south this still going on. We also talked about how the grits thing that Lily endured sucks, but back then it wasn’t crazy. Kids were physically punished very often. It was just the way things were. Ms. Lahaise wished she was teaching when teachers were allowed to hit their students. We don’t do lit circles anymore, we do lit squares. So we were put into groups for lit square roles. They are as follows:
    1Jeffery, 2Tristan, 3Romela, 4Katherine
    1ARthur, 2Komeno, 3Reva, 4Francis
    1Shawn, 2Lucy, 3Andrew, 4Orly
    1Mario, 2Raz 3Shahid, 4Richard
    1Gerrie, 2Chopin, 3Cecelia, 4Adriana
    1Cassandra, 2Haminton, 3Michael, 4Jocelyn

1s are discussion director, 2s are connectors, 3s are illuminators, and 4s are illustrators. These are due on Thursday for chapter 2.

After we assigned those roles, Ms. Lahaise had a headache, so we were all little angels and quietly had our own discussions in class about nothing related to english. That’s about it. We have a vocab test tomorrow. Do not fail. The next scribe will be Shawn. I love you Shawn.

A day in the life of Paige Lahaise’s 5th period class on 3/15/12
As we came into class today we began talking about next year’s English classes, and how half the class will not be ready for ap English class. The ap class is very difficult and requires a lot of reading and memorization. If you are considering going to a UC college then defiantly take either advanced or ap, and if you are going to community college, then you should take expos comp.
After  our talk about how none of us are going to take ap lit. We began our journal with the quote “jealousy is the tribute mediocrity pays to genius”- Fulton J. Sheen, and were once again interrupted by Ms.Lahaise. After our journal we did some silent reading. At 1:48 pm Ms. Lahaise told us to stop reading and take out our   Into The wild books and put them on your desk. After Ms. Lahaise told us to go outside for 5 min and to find one thing and bring it in. We all shared what we found, aqnd some of the things were a little interesting. Our assignment is to create a story about our object and post it on our blog with the pic of the object. So Ms.Lahaise told us to take a pic and then go put it back outside. We then talked about our journals and started discussing the difference between jealousy and envy. We were trying to distinguish the difference between the two. Once we were done talking about the quote Lahaise gave us two options, one of the books we would have to read digitally and the other one was normal. Not to many people agreed with the digital copy (2:24 p.m) ………………………………………still thinking……………………………………………… (2: 25 pm) WE ARE READING “THE SECRET LIFE OF BEE’S” WOOOOOOOH. The class is a little upset with the choice and wanted to know the name of the other book.  After all we agreed on “The Secret Life of Bee’s “ WOOOOH, and if you can’t do it digitally then you may get a copy of the book.  If you watch the movie instead of reading the book you will not be able to do the assignments successfully.  Our hw for monday is to read chapter one and have some analytical questions.   We had a random note check, and it was honestly random. Next note check will be a whole new group of people.

    Katherine’s Scribe Post(: 3/13/12

    Arthur’s Scribe Post! 3/12/12
Today’s scribe was absent, and so I offered to take his place.
We started class talking about Ms.Lahaises trip to Astro Camp. She realized that us 11th graders are not that bad compared to the 6th graders. As she stated “6th graders are evil”. Some interesting things that happened at astro camp with Ms.Lahaise were perverted 6th grade boys and girl drama with our school girls and the school girls from Colfax. If you want more elaboration on this, you should have been in class.

As for class buisness, Ms.Lahaise gave us our vocabulary words, and then we had the vocab test. But it was OPEN NOTE this time. But some bad news for those of you guys who were absent, you can’t use your notes. Those absent people must take the test like how we always take it. Sorry. After the the vocabulary test, we had a journal. The prompt was : “When I was young I thought money was the most important thing in life now that I’m older I know it is” -Oscar Wilde
After the test we started talking, “If you fail an open book test, than you are being retarded” -someone. People have changed the meaning of words. They differ the connotation and denotation of words. For example the actual definition of retarded is getting in ones own way. Also like the word fetish, it doesn’t mean anything sexual like most of you think. But it is an object or thing respected or devoted to. Just a funney comment made by Michael was “Im gay, smoking on a fag”.

DO NOT BRING LIT BOOKS for a while.
Tomorrow we will be catching up on Into the Wild.
Also for those of you who couldn’t focus on the EAP because of the circumstances, Ms.Lahaise will try to figure something out to make it more fair and give those people another chance.

That’s it for todays scribe post.
The next scribe post is whomever the original person was supposed to be today. :D

  • Francisc

    Francis’ scribe post 3/8/12!
Today was the day designated for us to take the EAP test. As Ms. Lahaise told us before, she was not there and Ms. Gold subbed for her and dealt with everything that needed to be dealt with. People came from other classes as well to take this 45 minute essay.
After the essay’s time slot was done all the people not in our class went back to their original class and Ms. Gold told us about something called a One-Pager. A one-pager is a mini poster that includes:
    - 1 visual (illustration)
    - key words to sum up the book or chapter decorated around the poster
    - 2 quotes
    - 2 thoughtful questions and answers
    - 1 personal statement about the scene
    - and 5-7 clusters or thoughts about the scene or chapter
This is based on Into the Wild and is DUE ON MONDAY!!!!
We also had the journal, which was: “Lincoln said that people are just about as happy as they make up their minds to be. What is the nature of ‘happiness’? We often equate it with ‘fun’ or the ‘goodies of life.’ Is this what Lincoln means? If not, then what?”

The rest of the period was given to us to work on either our journal or our one-pager. It was for me too, up until Tristan Alexander broke my pencil for no reason.

The next scribe is Tristan Alexander. He broke rule #1: Don’t mess with the scribe.

  • Rukshad1995

So today we had Ms Lahaise, she wasn’t here on Monday because she was moving and will not be here on Thursday. Anyways as usual we took a Vocabulary test (on gumption) and went straight to silent reading. There was no journal on this day, but we turned in at least 12 of our journals that we have done so far adn the 5 quote thingy for Chptr. 8. When everyone was done Ms. Lahaise told us some unsettling news. Apparently she couldn’t bring our practice essays for the test on Thursday, but she said that it wasn’t a big problem because the essay is supposed to be really similar to how we write our blogs. At the end of the day we were supposed to learn new Vocab. words, but we ran outta time.If we don’t remind her next time, we’re all gonna have to take the test without any of  us knowing the words. THE END!

Today Ms. Lahaise was absent and we
had Mrs. Gold for a substitute. Mrs. Gold started off the class by giving us a
lecture about” Into the Wild”. Then we received a journal. Our journal was a
quote by Rosa Parks, “knowing what must be done does away with fear”. After
giving us little time to do our journal, Mrs. Gold talked more about chapter 8
of Into the Wild. When she finished talking, she gave us an assignment that was
due at the end of the period. The assignment had six questions about chapter 8
of the book and we had to answer it. We worked on the worksheet for the rest of
    the period.

We came into to class and we turned in our lit circle roles. After we took our vocabulary quiz and when we were done, we read silently.

Then, she gave us new words! After the new words, we watched a TED by Kevin Allocca: why videos go viral.

Then we wrote a journal about the TED. After, we discussed what we wrote about the TED and we had a discussion if we agreed or disagreed with

    the video.

Later, we discussed to build a fire and it slowly transitioned to us talking about into the wild. Mrs. Lahaise wasnt too pleased with our lit circle roles,

and she said she knows we can do better. She said that she was collecting our journals Monday, and was expecting approx. 12, and that we didnt

have to bring our Text Books for a while.

Then we got into our lit circle groups and discussed the chapter we read and what we thought about what happened during the chapter.

    February 27, 2012

As we walked into the warm class to sit down in our seats, Ms. Lahaise immediately asked us to turn in our homework, To Build a Fire. At first, Ms. Lahaise thought we had a vocabulary quiz, but she had forgotten to give us the words in the first place. So we now have a quiz on this upcoming Thursday. After we wrote our new vocabulary terms down, we did a journal:

“Anxiety is nothing but repeatedly re-experiencing failure in advance” -Seth Godin.
After we did the journal, we read for about 30 minutes or so.
We then had a class discussion about this journal topic and many opinions varied. The class discussed the difference between anxiety and adrenaline. We all agreed that anxiety is more of a nervous feeling, whereas adrenaline was a rush of excitement. The class also agreed that the main thing about anxiety is the fear of failure. Anxiety can completely take over a person for the worst, but the best way to get out of anxiety is to work through it and get rollin’!

Ms. Lahaise decided that we are going to pier review our EAP Essays that we did in class on Thursday because studies have shown that when you take a look at someone else’s work, you are able to see mistakes or good examples.
To properly pier review, we were told to get an 11th Grade Contemporary Compensation Course because it gives you the rubric that we are to use for the grading of the essays (page 286).
~This is Holistic Scoring: We started with the number 4 standard and worked our way up or down depending how well the essay that we were grading was.You are to read the standards of each number and ask yourselves if  the paper you are reading met those standards. ~

A few minutes later, Ms. Lahaise handed out two more essays (everyone got the same) and we were to see what kind of standards these essays held (again, using the rubric on page 286). Ms. Lahaise reminded us that if the explanation was wrong, then it is below adequate (standard 4).

After reading both of the essays, the class agreed that the first essay was a 5, whereas the second was a 4-.
After this, Ms. Lahaise passed back the essays we wrote so we could take a look at the grade that we received.

    ** ANNOUNCEMENTS**
    1. Since the “Fat paragraph presentation” won’t be in the five week progress report, our silent reading will be graded for it, so please make sure to bring your SSR book everyday to class.
    2. If you are EXTREMELY NERVOUS of presenting the fat paragraphs, Ms. Lahaise is thinking about a website that interviews you based on your book. Only Ms. Lahaise would be waiting it and it would ONLY count for 1 of 2 of your fat paragraphs, not both.
    3. The five week report card will consist of:
          – a couple of vocabulary tests.
          – two blogs.
          – a few lit circles.
    4. If someone has a D or F, they WILL receive the grade they deserve and not receive any slashes. If you fail spring semester, you will need to take summer school or adult school. If you get a D in 11th grade English, you will not be able to repeat it next year in a class at SOCES. However, if you Fail the class, you will be given the opportunity to repeat the class.

*****BRING INTO THE WILD AND YOUR TEXTBOOKS ON THURSDAY! REMEMBER, WE HAVE A VOCABULARY QUIZ ALONG WITH ANOTHER LIT. CIRCLE THAT IS DUE*******

    February 23, 2012

As we walked into class today, we picked up the Contemporary Composition books. After we got the books, everyone started to look over the vocabulary words for the last time. We were going to take the vocabulary quiz and Ms. Lahaise realized she gave us the words for next week, so we then took the test for next week and will take the one we were supposed to take this week, next week. We then looked at the composition book and Ms. Lahaise told us to turn to page 266 which had a better learning styles test than the one we took online.

After looking at the test for a minute we wrote a journal about the brainstormer circle and the three words were genius, dying, and baker. When we were done with our journals we copied down the new vocabulary words from the board. We didn’t get the definitions though, because we didn’t have enough time. So we will get them on monday.

We then took the intelligence survey on page 266 and shared some of our results. Ms. Lahaise reminded us again that in 2 weeks from today (March 8th) we will be taking the essay part of the EAP test. This is also one of the two ways to raise our second semester grade. After this we went over the holistic scoring guide for the essay on page 286 of the Contemporary Composition book.

If we pass the EAP test we will be able to go into English 101 in college. The is essay is cored out of 6 and getting at least 4 is a good grade. Remember to explain and support your explanations in the essay!

Then we were given a sample essay topic for us to write about. We then started to write the essay for the rest of the class time. This is to help us practice for our essay part of the EAP test.

We don’t have homework for Into the Wild because we weren’t able to discuss our literary circles and go over them today, but we do have homework in the Literature book. So check the calendar to see what it is!

The next scribe will be Orly, Goodluck!

    February 21, 2012
Today we walked into class and the first thing that happened
was a seat change. Once all seats were changed and everybody was settled in Ms.
Lahaise gave us new words. If you were not here ask any body in the class and
they should be able to give it to you. Once getting the new words we watched a
TED on David Blaine who had an amazing accomplishment. The TED was done and we
had some time for silent reading.

After the reading Ms. Lahaise told us about the different
ways to bump our grades. One way is if we scored proficient or lower in the CST’s
last year but get advanced this year our grade for second semester gets bumped
up. Another way is passing the EAP, which is an essay and a few multiple choice
questions. The essay part of the EAP will be taken in a few weeks, the multiple
choice is part of the CST’s. Passing the EAP gives us a right of passage to English
101 which is the English class we should be taking in college. We will have 45
minutes to write the essay. Ms. Lahaise will prep us more for this on Thursday.

Once the discussion of these tests and grades was done we
began discussing Into the Wild. Many people had mixed feelings about this book,
some hate it, others like it, and then there are some who like it but hate how
    it is written.

That’s it for today’s class… don’t forget to check the calendar for our homework and DO NOT FORGET TO STUDY FOR THE
    VOCAB TEST ON THURSDAY!!

The next scribe is Reva :) Good luck!

    February 16,2012

Today, everyone walked into class and looked over their vocabulary words. First we took our vocabulary test and when we finished, we wrote a journal on a quote and did silent reading. Mrs. Lahaise passed around the reading log, so if you were absent be sure to add your book to the list! She also changed a few rules. Now, instead of typing up a Fat Paragraph and posting it on our blogs, we have to present to the class. Once we finish reading our book, we have to schedule an “appointment” with Mrs. Lahaise. In our presentation we have to try to sell our book to the class and you should be able to present without any flashcards for help. The only exception is if you need to write down quotes that you want to use in your presentation.

We also have to start taking notes everyday, and make sure to take it seriously! Mrs. Lahaise will be doing random note checks to make sure you are paying attention. She is not going to always choose you, so if you miss one note check it can negatively impact your grade. We can keep our notes in a notebook, just make sure to keep them organized.

We also learned how to take more effective notes. Write key points and concepts that you think you won’t remember. If you don’t know something, write it down. When reviewing your notes, you will know you have to focus on that concept . Mrs. Lahaise guarantees that you will do better in class if you take notes! Remember to go home the same day and read through your notes, duh! You will be more likely to remember them if you type them up and summarize them at the end.

We also went over literature circle roles. Remember that you must have 5 questions and answers for EACH chapter. If we are assigned two chapters, you have to have 10 questions in total. And remember if you are illustrator, you have to draw a picture for EACH chapter. Try to stay away from the sample questions, but it is okay if you decide to use them.

Have a great 3 day weekend and don’t forget to bring your textbooks on Tuesday!
The next scribe will be Ramela! (:

1/13/12(: As soon as we walked into class we started by watching a TED talk, “Why Do Crack Dealers Live With Their Mothers.” Our assignment for our journals was to write a six word response on the TED, in six words we must summarize the entire TED.Ms. Lahaise then collected our Lit. Circles to initial and check them off. She also stated she would be collecting them at the end of class so that she could give us credit for them and so she could file them away. From now on, all Lit. Circles will be collected after discussion and will be filed away for future reference. We shared a few of our journals six word journals. Arthur asked “What about your Ms. Lahaise?” Her response was “Im not in this class, i run this class.”LOL *****NEW RULE!!!!*******ESPECIALLY FOR AN HONORS CLASS!!!!!! There must be at least 5 something! 5 thought provoking statements! Remember to use your critical thinking skills! Pull out what you read and expand! For each role in the Lit. Circle assignment you must take that extra step and write more! Do not just summarize what you read. We then got into our groups and had discussion, we got our new roles for next time, and then discussed what we talked about with the rest of the class. Finally we finished getting the rest of our vocabulary definitions. Our Lit. Circles were collected again. *** DO NOT FORGET TEXTBOOKS!!!*** And that was the end of class. Next scribe, Jocelyn(:

Thank you Tristan for lesson.  It was the best advice I have ever had… unfortunately I cracked under the pressure. :( I’m sorry.  I couldn’t take the stress and went “out of mind” in writing the scribe.

Today we walked in and took a vocabulary test.  Period wrote on the test, so Ms. Lahaise had to print out new copies for everyone in the class.  After this, we did our journals; today was special because we had two journals today was special because we had two journals to choose from.  One of the journal was by actor/comedian Samuel L. Jackson, “Self confidence is the first requisite to great undertakings’ the other quote was “is all that we see or seem, but a dream within a dream?” by Edgar Allen Poe.  As usual those who finished the journal had silent reading (remember its the book that you’re suppose to be reading for your fat paragraphs).  Speaking of which, today was the deadline to tell Ms. Lahaise of the book you’re reading.  Ms. Lahaise asked us if we would like to share if our books are good.  We had a discussion on the author of Michael’s book, Michael Connelly.  We also talked about Cecilia’s book, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Marcus’ book that was written by Stephen King.  Marcus believes that The Simpsons’ Movie, is based loosely on King’s novel.  We also briefly talked about different genres of stories.  Ray Bradbury was also a topic of discussion, as we discussed some of his works and his connection to Mrs. Gordon (they’re relatives).  After this, the class concluded that Shakespeare is boring.  A Mid Summer’s night is supposedly a great book that is one of Ms. Lahaise’s favorite novels.  Once again we talked about how books turned into movies are a travesty ;) .  Another thing that we concluded is that the majority of the class outside of Gerrie and a few others.  The Book Thief is another novel that was highly recommend by  Ms. Lahaise and others, who called the book very good, while describing the movie as “blah.”  We started talking about long books and class was immediately excited and “pumped.”  Ms. Lahaise also used the word “fufu,” a fun book full of fluff, to describe various novels.  The Hobbit is the opening of The Lord of the Rings series.  J. R. R. Tolkien’s, the writer of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series, books tend to have a lot of details in them.  Ms. Lahaise stated that she has not seen a movie that was based on a book in over 3 years.  She, along with Cecilia, also mentioned that they HATE Charles Dickens’ works.  Kurt Vonnegut was another author talked about during the class period.  It was mentioned that he possess a weird, unique style.  We then, watched a 20/20 video on the life of Chris McCandless.  The video was very inspirational and I urge anyone who missed or has yet to see it, to watch it.  We had a discussion about the video and the book as well.  We are going to be doing lit circles for Into the Wild like we did for The Great Gatsby.  Our homework for Monday is reading the first 3 chapters (only do your role for chapter 2); the roles are “Connector,” “Discussion Direct,” and “Illustrator.”  The class split into groups of 3 for the assignment; the groups are:

    • Cassandra, Komeno, and Cecilia
    • Andrew, Adriana, and Richard
    • Gerrie, Shahid, and Shawn
    • Jeffrey, Arthur, and Lucy
    • Katherine, Michael, and Tristan
    • Chopin, Marcus, and Jocelyn
    • Francis, Raz, and Reva
    • Orly, Ramela, and Hammy

We finished the class period by watching Michael present Zutopia, his utopia.  We also received the vocabulary words for the test.  Unfortunately, due to the time, we did not get all of the definitions; we will get the remaining definitions next time we meet.

The next scribe will be Adriana.  Hopefully, you can do better than me and not let it get to your head.  I warn you, it’s really hard, but if you stay focus you can achieve it and make Tristan happy.

Hello period 5. Today was 7-FEB-12 and a 12:33 dismissal day. It was a routine day of a Ted Talk, vocab quiz, and discussion of what’s going on in the class. First thing we did was our vocab test. After doing that, we went into silent reading, then we went over the “Reading Book Log” (I don’t know if that’s what it’s called. It probably isn’t), which was passed around. We were to fill out this paper so Ms. Lahaise knows what book you’re going to be reading during silent reading time. So you can’t BS your fat paragraphs! If you did not have a book today, calm down, you can put your book in the log on Thursday. After that, we recieved new vocab words, which we’ll be tested on, on Thursday. We then watched a Ted Talk of Sebastian Wernicke talking about summarizing 1000 Ted Talks in 6 words. http://www.ted.com/talks/sebastian_wernicke_1000_tedtalks_6_words.html That is the video there. And this is probably going to blow your mind-we didn’t have to write a journal on it!! I know, that stuff cray. We discussed the Ted Talk and why it is relevant to us: Over the school year, we’ve had lots of journals and have analyzed lots of things, and to retain more information summarizing in 6 words can be very helpful. So on Thursday we’re going to watch another Ted and we will summarize it in 6 words. Oh and we’re going to be getting into “Into the Wild” soon so you should be very, very excited. Good stuff.
The next scribe will be Komenoooooooooooo! Komeno, I believe in you. Being the scribe comes with great responsibility. It’s imperative that you do not let the power get to your head and that you keep your integrity strong.
    Tristan out.
