Late Post for the day of Tuesday May 15, 2012
Hey everyone! Sorry for the late post but my computer broke down and I was not able to get to a working computer until today. Now on to what happen that day. There was not a scribe assiged that day, so I volunteered. Since it was a short period we watched a TED. The speaker was Joshua Foer and his discussion was about memory and ways to improve it. That was all for that day. Until next time.

Another scorching hot day in Lahaise’s lair. Instead of the test we were originally assigned to take we were given another assignment. From chapters 9 through 24 we must find references to macine or animals. We must have both. Once the quote is found you write it down along with the page number and chapter. Machines are something with a motor. As we were beginning the project, the class was debating on going into a different classroom because people were “dying” from the heat. We were beginning to go to our usual destination, Mr. Nomachi’s room, but we argued into going to Mrs. Navarros room because her room had an extremely well working air conditioner. As for the rest of the day, the class attempted to finished the work that was assigned to us, in Mrs. Navarros room. It is also undecided whether the project assigned to us is going to be this friday or next week.
I would love to choose scribe but i do not know who has not done the scribe for second semester, and I also will not be in class this friday.

Today we walked into class and the AC was still broken, the heat was killing us! So ok we had this super awesome journal about getting in trouble for the first time and people shared, Vlad had a story about burning cars, Raphael had a fight in elementary, Nicole was blamed for something she didn’t do and etc. after the conversation on the journal the Ac repairman came to our class and so we left the room and went to the open space thing in front of Nomachi’s class. we took a seat and Marcus gave us a fat paragraph on into the wild and why we should’ve stayed with it. after the fat paragraph we went into our regular lit. circle groups and talked about our homework. after that we went into Nomachi’s class to talk about our lit. roles in class. Then Lahaise gave us a lecture on not blowing it this year, and after that we talked more about our homework. We were talking about the depression and a little about history of when the story took place, and then we got into an argument on history and fiction and then after that we continued our discussion on the homework.

We are going to have a test on Grapes of Wrath. Oh and after the announcement about the test we went back to Lahaise’s class and she collected the homework. The test well be on chapters 1-21. Thats all that happened today.

Because of this ridiculous heat, we conducted class in Mr. Nomachi’s room.
Ms. Lahaise collected the homework and started to talk about the homework from 2 days ago.

    I TO WE HOMEWORK
-We discussed how pulling together is the best thing to do because all they have is each other. But Oscar said, that even though this is happening, the Joad family is falling apart.

    STICKS AND STONES HOMEWORK
-Almost everyone agreed that we were never seriously discriminated against, but we have seen it happening.
-We found that the Okie vs Californian discrimination is a form of sectionalism.

-We went into lit circle roles based on the five different roles

    Word Watchers
-Tarpaulin-It’s just the long word for tarp
-Vehemence- mad, pissed off. (We got into this whole discussion on how Ruthie can say something in soft vehemence and Hike said it was because of the disappointment she felt upon arriving to California.

    Discussion Director
-They discussed on some reasons why Granma died and thought Grampa’s death was a catalyst
-Ms. Lahaise also said that there was a shift in dependence in the family. Everyone went from depending on Pa to depending on Ma.

Ms. Lahaise said that the Joads’ actions to find a job and attain a better life relates to the Great Gatsby and the American Dream.

    Connectors
-Nikki connected the whole Okie thing to the word rednecks. The term redneck originated from the people who were working all day in the sun and would have their necks sunburned.
-We talked about different kinds of labels and how all of them were meant to be insults.
….We also talked about eating dogs and how that deals with the Asian Stereotype
-The Grapes of Wrath was also connected to the 1849 Gold Rush in which many people were disappointed that they couldn’t find any gold.

Oscar said the occurrence of racism/discrimination depends on where you live.

What do you think about the homeless?
-Ripsime said that she doesn’t really go out of her way to help/hurt them.
-Vince said that some are unable to be helped, like those with mental illnesses
-Nikki and Ani said that they feel bad, but they’re not doing much to change their fate
-Haik quoted, “If you give a man a fish, he will be full for a day. If you teach a man how to fish, he will be full for a lifetime.”
-Vince also said that many factors go into a person’s chances on being homeless.

    Illuminators
-They talked about how the red ant is a recurring event…Cori said that when she sees red, it usually symbolizes death. The red ant not only comes to Granma, but also the tortoise from chapter 3
-The illuminators talked about a quote that emphasized on how bad the hunger was during the Depression and how men thought not of their own stomachs, but their children’s.

    Illustrators
-Hike drew a half and half picture separating the Californians and the Okies. The Okies had rain on them, and it was just a gloomy place. The Californians however, had sunshine and all good things.

Ms. Lahaise talked about how younger people are better to adjusting to the customs of a new country instead of the older people. She related this to the Joads because Grampa and Granma wouldn’t have liked California much because it was so big on industry, not good old farming.

We had two fat paragraphs today:
    -Vince- The Nightly News
    -Sydney- Elixir

Don’t forget to do your homework (:

We’ll today turned out to have a series of unfortunate events. As the passing period was to retire in 2 minutes time, the fire alarm raised panic in all the students. I was already in class when Ms. Lahaise said that this was probably a false alarms, never the less she told us to follow the rules and head out to our homerooms. But then as soon as I exited the classroom, Mr. Maza spoke over the P.A. and assured us that this WAS purely a false alarm. Soon the students all entered the classroom and we all waited for the bell to signal the start of class. We were again discouraged to hear the fire alarm go off a second time but this time we did nothing, for we knew that this was just a false alarm. Soon after the fire alarm retired, it was followed by the bell to signal the start of class. We were discourage again to hear the in the late minutes of 5th period, the air conditioner had broken. All of us groaned as Ms. Lahaise started her second sentence telling us that we are able to go into Mr. Nomachi’s class. We all cheered and after our cheers died down she said that she had one more piece of bad news. She planned for us to watch this weeks TED talk in Nomachi’s room but it unfortunately did not burn onto a disk. We groaned once more and came to the realization that we must sit out those 20 humid minutes in the room to watch the TED talk. But for me, the TED talk was so interesting that it took my mind off the heat. This weeks TED talk was about texting and how technology fills the emptiness we feel when we are alone. This is the link to that TED talk http://www.youtube.com/watch?client=mv-google&hl=en&v=MtLVCpZIiNs&gl=US&nomobile=1Once we were done watching it, we swiftly moved over to Mr. Nomachi’s room where it was nice and cool. It was there that we did our journal and reflected on the TED talk. It was actually surprising to me that most of our class was on board with what she was saying, and we spoke more in depth about how we are changing slowly into people who will not be able to live alone. And that was pretty much our day. Don’t forget to do your literary circle roles for Chapter 18 and Chapter 19. The next scribe is going to be Denise A.

  • Markuspauls

Today we started with a short journal and new vocab words.  Ms. Lahaise continued on to clarify the lit circle word watcher role:
“The idea is not simply to find and define the words, although that is part of it.  It is not enough just to write down the words which are used frequently.  It is important to look for deeper meanings”
    For example:
    What did the dust symbolize?
What was the metaphor involving monsters?
Makes sure to include WHY the word is important.  Ms. Lahaise then read the information regarding the Illuminator role.
Fat Paragraoh Presentations: Oskar-”1984″  Brianna-”Memoirs Of a Geisha”  Leslie-”The Missing Girl”
We then got to our Lit Circle discussions. We gathered by groups and roles, then we had a class discussion with a few comments and representatives from each role.
The next scribe is Oscar K.

Today in class we started off by doing a vocabulary test that a lot of people got a good grade in because i could hear everyone was pretty much yelling their grade out. After that we watched a TED by a man named Bryan Stevenson who talked about the injustice of the legal system. Then we wrote in our journals for a while. After our journals we discussed what his purpose was in speaking to all of those people in the audience of TED and Mrs. Lahaise told us it was a call to action because the rich people sitting there could probably  do something to fix the messed up system they have. After that we changed seats then Mrs. Lahaise passed back our Homework and them took them back for some reason…

-Our homework wont be a lit circle this time but it will be based off of chapters we have already read from The Grapes of Wrath.

-The next scribe will be Raphael

  • jonahi

Today class began a bit differently. Instead of the regular quote or TED given for our journal entries we were presented with an in-class assignment.
We basically chose a character from “Grapes of Wrath”, find five quotes relating to the character, identify what that character is about, and present symbols. The class worked on these for the whole period and at the end they were collected. Ms.Lahaise stated that we would be presenting these later on, so make sure you can support your statements and label what page your quote was found on!

-Here is the link for the assignment : https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1oSx0YQVyRzbvNVuMHqnF3PIE7PDyZnkKqO8y0PajzB8

-We also have homework due Friday so make sure to check the calendar for more details.

    -Next scribe will be Fernando.

Once everyone shuffled into their seats we see that our clickers are
already neatly placed on the corner of our desks. It’s a Tuesday so that
means we had a vocab test today! Ms. Lahaise told the class that she is
still missing that one clicker from last week. She assumes that someone
accidentally placed a clicker in their backpack and forgotten all about
it. So if check your bags to be sure if you weren’t the one that accidentally took it.

If you don’t already know your log in number please memorize it or bring
your school ID to class or you won’t be able to take the vocab test.
Mr. Nomachi came over to look over our class while Ms. Lahaise runs out
to run some sort of errand. If you finished early there was a little bit
of silent reading. I was called out but when I returned we got new
words. We then packed up all our stuff and the bell rang.

We don’t have any homework due tomorrow but make sure you read (if you
really didn’t already) chapters ten, eleven and twelve! We’re going to
have some sort of in-class activity concerning those chapters tomorrow.

The next scribe will be Jonah!

    Hello everyone!
-We started off the day by turning in our Chapter 8-12 Lit circle role homework.
    - We did our journal on a TED talk where Diana Nyad tells her inspirational swimming story. (http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/diana_nyad_extreme_swimming_with_the_world_s_most_dangerous_jellyfish.html)
    - After discussing the journal we listened to three fat paragraph presentations.
    - Note: Look at the end of this scribe post to see the covers of the three books.
    - Hike’s presentation was on “One Bullet Away” by Nathaniel Fick. He told us that it is nonfiction and that it is not a book for everyone. It was an easy read because it had common dialect. The story starts off with the main character finishing college and after realizes that he wants to do something more meaningful with his life. He starts looking into the military, army, and marine core. He decides to join the marine core because unlike the rest, they don’t promise him anything because they believe “you have what it takes”. You follow the main character on his journey when he is deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Hike enjoyed this book becsuse it shows the reader the truth about the war and not what the media says. This book shows you the steps to become a marine officer.
    - Rachel’s presentation was on “The Friends we Keep” by Holly Chamberlin. The novel is told in three different points of view by the three main characters. This story is about how these three best friends from college loose contact with each other over time but then reunite. Rachel told us that this book includes romance and that despite all the different points of views it is an easy read. You don’t have to worry about getting lost. Rachel enjoyed this book because it helped her see what might happen after high school and college. She learned that friendships only maintain as strong as you make them.
    - Vince’s presentation was on “Peter and Max”, a Fables novel, by Bill Willingham. This book is about Peter Piper from all the different fables. ( Peter with the flute and Peter Piper  who picked peppers) In this book, that Peter is the same person from all the different stories. In the story, all the fables exists in one world but an unknown adversary sends them to our world’s New York where they have to try to not be found out. Peter lives on a farm ( which includes all the animals from the different fables) with his wife Bo Peep. All of a sudden. Peter’s brother Max returns and is on the mission to kill Peter. This is a well written book and it is part of bigger series but you are able to read this book without having to read the others. You don’t have to worry because you’ll be able to understand what’s going on. This book is very similiar to the tv series Once Upon a Time.
-After all the great presentations were done, we all met in our Lit circle groups.
    - Ms. Lahaise decided that she wanted to try this new thing where we all meet in groups according to our Lit circle roles. So the discussion directors meet with other discussion directors and so on.
    - But because of the mix up with the chapters we decided to meet up how we normally do in our groups.
-After discussing the chapters in our group we rejoined the class to discuss what we learned.
    - Ms. Lahaise asked the class if Steinbeck would have been able to get his message across if he hadn’t used all that slang in the dialog.
    -  Everyone decided no because the way Steinbeck wrote it makes us feel connected with the character. It shows the readers how it was during that time and it makes us feel like we were there. The dialog doesn’t feel forced at all, it seems real.
    - Ms. Lahaise said that this is what makes a book a classic book.
-Ms. Lahaise mentioned that she has posted the rest of the homework for ”The Grapes of Wrath” on the calender.
-Ms. Lahaise also mentioned that we will have to do an activity on Wednesday but she did not specify.
-At the last ten minutes of class Jasmine came back from her French field trip where she got to watch a French film at the Directors Guild.
-Then we all tried to convince Ms. Lahaise to let us have a field trip.
-Right before Ms. Lahaise let us have a free period she told us how we all by Wednesday have to have read chapters 8-12. Also. that if you have not turned in the homework you have one week to turn it in for half credit.

The next scribe will be….. Gina ! :D

Hey guys, turns out I am going to do the scribe for today. So today was a short Tuesday so there was not much on the calendar.
First off, we took our first vocab test using the clickers! We first had to put in our school ID and then click to join the classroom. Next we input the numbers in accordance with the test and then got our results right away. Unfortunately before we started, Ms. Lahaise informed us that she was missing one of the clickers. This led to a lot of searching and investigating but no luck.
After the test, we got a journal that said, “If you want truly to understand something, try to change it.” – Kurt Lewin
Finally we got new words and that was the end of the class.
    Next scribe will be Markus.

  • Vincent H.

The class begins at 1:10 with Mrs. Lahaise going over the
students in the class that are planning to take the honors advanced comp.  All of the students were assured that they
have a secured place in next year’s honors advanced comp, but there are too
many people in the class, as of now.  She
went on to say that she needs to cut people from the class, and that we, her
current students, are on the frontline of discouraging others that may not be
    prepared to do the work.

Mrs. Lahaise is then interrupted by the PA with an announcement
that the growth and development assembly has been canceled.

The message ends and she goes on to say that on Friday there
will a message on the announcements alerting the junior class that there is an honors
advanced comp preparation meeting.  This meeting
was said to be more of a way to deter the faint of heart from taking the coarse
and slim down the number of enrolled students.  It was also said that her current students did
not need to attend the meeting, seeing as we have access to her several times a
week and have been previously briefed on the coarse material.  A few personal questions are then asked by
various students and then the subject is shifted towards the vocabulary test.

     Mrs. Lahaise explains
that she would like to have the test and then go straight into assigning new
words.  The class pleads for a few
minutes to study and she generously indulges the request, and after three
    minutes the test began.

After the test a journal was put up on the smart board- “When
a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him
boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand,
and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventures.”
(Emerson).  This is followed by a very
brief discussion, during which Mrs. Lahaise admits to not understanding the
quote her first time she analyzed it.  She
had overlooked the line about the bully being the world and then moves forward
    with the day.

She puts up new words on the board and then shifts the topic
to the class work that due to time restrictions in now homework, and then we
get the new words.  The class then in an
uproar demands to watch Into the Wild, so Mrs. Lahaise gives a few choices.  There is the option of quite time, movie, work
on the assignment due Friday, but no cards.  She then recalls that in one of her other
classes a girl read Into the Wild and
did her fat paragraph on it.  This girl
had loved the book and made a strong statement that anyone that did not enjoy
it had a limited IQ (not put so tactfully.  This reminds Mrs. Lahaise that Piero is supposed
to present today, but he does not understand the presentation and is unable at
this time.  Ani then offers to present,
and the smart board is set up for her to show her book, and Mrs. Lahaise gives
a tech tip to type your search into the URL instead of Google.  Ani presents Brisingr, and the teacher and class point out the similarity to Lord of the Rings.  Then Mrs. Lahaise puts the work on the board
so we can get a jump start on the work if we wish.  To finish the day, we are dismissed into free
    time.  The class ends.

The next scribe will be Gal.

Welcome back everybody! I hope you all had a relaxing spring break and are ready to get back to work! Here is the scribe for April 10, 2012 period 6:

”Around this time of year, my juniors tend to get senioritous(sp?). DON’T!! Say to yourself ‘I’m not going to be that one!’”-Ms. Lahaise

For those of you who signed up for advanced comp next year, please tell everyone who doesn’t have Ms. Lahaise this year how scary she is. *Please note that those were Ms. Lahaise’s words, not mine!!* Juniors have first priority.

People had asked Ms. Lahaise about cutting some of the summer homework for advanced comp because of the short summer. Her decision is no so get to it, people! I know you can do it!

Advanced Comp meetings are coming up but remember that you have the advantage of talking to Ms. Lahaise since we see her three times a week.

After that lovely discussion about next year, it was time to come back to the present and do what we do best.

We got new vocabulary words and we have the test for those words TOMORROW!

Here’s some exciting and Eco-friendly news: Tomorrow is the paper test we will be taking in Ms. Lahaise’s class. After tomorrow, we will be using the Smart Board clickers. This will not only cut down the use of paper, but it will also allow us to see our grade right after we take it. How exciting!

After we got our new words, we did a little assignment for Chapter Five of The Grapes of Wrath. If you were absent or you loved the assignment so much you want to do it again, check back in the comments below this post. I will put it up once Ms. Lahaise sends it to me.

While we worked on that assignment, Ms. Lahaise chose three people to have their notes checked. The lucky winners were Ripsime, Breanna, and Ani.

Remember that note checks are random and YOU could be next.

When we were done, we discussed our answers for the assignment.

Unfortunately, Ms. Lahaise was about to tell us something when that annoying bell rang. We’ll just have to hear it tomorrow!

REMEMBER TO READ CHAPTER 6 BEFORE CLASS TOMORROW

After thinking about this for a long time, my decision for the next scribe has been made.

Our scribe for April 11, 2012 will be…

    VINCENT!! Congratulations, buddy!

(If Vincent cannot perform the task mentioned above or is absent, the BACKUP SCRIBE WILL BE GAL!!!)

  • Olmos Leslie

Hey you guys sorry for the late scribe post but sadly I got home really late, but here we go.

Today we got into class and I think that no one was marked late congrats. For better or for worse Ripsime reminded Ms. Lahaise that we had a vocabulary test, although she didn’t have it printed out she didn’t not hesitate to go and print it out for us. Ripsime told Ms. Lahaise that since she wasn’t prepared it was a harbinger that we should not take it. Ani also tried convincing Ms. Lahaise of a new way to take the test which was to play charades, Ms Lahaise said if we were a middle school class she would do it.  This made everyone get all excited and Nicole Said, ” but we are part middle and elementary school.”   Finally we all settled and begun our test. As we were taking it Ms. Lahaise, wrote a journal on the board. By Anais Nin ” We don’t see things as they are,we see them as we are.” After everyone did there journals she collected homework. Hike told her he didn’t get the chapter, which got her to explain to us that when she is looking at the Lit Circle roles she is not looking if you get every part of the chapter, but how much thought you put into it. That at least you show you put in effort. She also, went over about cheating and that we should not have to cheat on our tests, because we don’t want to loose everything that we’ve gained with her. This problem is occurring with her juniors mostly, come on guys it’s only 10% of your grade. it’s not worth it after that long talk. Denise presented her Fat paragraph, on The Golden Compass. & then Nicole on Fly Girl, both very interesting books that anyone could take an interest too. After this all Ms. Lahaise had to say was how the week we come back was going to work so read well.
TUESDAY : NEW VOCABULARY WORDS AND LIT CIRCLES FOR CHAPTER FIVE WILL BE DISCUSSED.WEDNESDAY: VOCABULARY TEST AND CHAPTER SIX LIT CIRCLES.

After this we watched part of In To The Wild & got our books back.
    Next Scribe is Rachel <3

  • Nadia

We started the class by watching a Ted with Beau Lotto.
Mrs. Lahaise collected the homework of the lit circles and then we continued watching the Ted.
After the Ted we did out journals and when some people were finished they did silent reading.
    We discussed the journal.
Mrs. Lahaise said that everything is an illusion, fake and made up. And that all of our perspectives are different, everyone sees and thinks differently. She related the Ted to our lit circle roles of the connector.
The she talked about into the wild and how the movie is really bad.
We got into our lit circles.
Then we discussed the lit circles of the grapes or warth.
Rachel said that the turtle might represent struggle or an immigrant.
Vince said that the turtle represented Joad’s life, how the turtle is moving through it’s a metaphor for the struggle of his journey and he finds himself way in the shell that represents his home, his home goes everywhere he goes. It’s a battle that he’s taking. It also represents the past and how there’s more to the journey.
Mrs. Lahaise said that there’s a link in the chapters.
    The next scribe is Leslie.

  • Kaylie0496

Today Mrs.Lahaise collected the into the wild books while some people are studying for the vocabulary test.
Starting Tuesday we will have a random quiz on the scribe posts. The homework was collected, chapter 1&2 lit circles. Then we get ready to take the vocabulary test, when people finish their test they have to do silent reading while Mrs.Lahaise collects the test. When everyone is done with the vocabulary test Mrs.Lahaise shows us a Ted. We did our journal and then we discussed the Ted. We got our new vocabulary words.
Then we talked about The Grapes of Warth, we talked about the symbols of the book. We got into our lit circles and we answered questions that were on the smart board that Mrs.lahaise made us answer.
After Raphael and Leslie did their fat paragraphs.
    The next scribe is Nadia.

  • Vladislav P 3-21-12

sorry its late and Raphael couldn’t do it today so he picked me in class today, lost track of time,so in period 6 on 3-21-12  we all walked into the class, we sat down nice and quietly and listened for instructions. The instructions were:
    1. Free write as a journal
    2. 20 minutes of silent reading
    3. Read chapter 2 of “The Grapes of Wrath” and discuss it in our lit circle
So we all did this and then once every group was done with the reading and the discussing some people talked to each other and some played cards and others worked on something else like study or do homework for another class.
Ooh one more thing we had a sub, it was some elderly lady didn’t really get her name, but i have seen her before.

Next scribe person will be Rachel Katz

  • RitterG

    Hey 6th period students!
Ok so today we walked into class and we saw that there was a substitute teacher Mr. Cohnen when we walked into class we saw a quote and quickly started our journal, thats when Mr. Cohnen said what were supposed to do.
    1. Journal
    2. Silent Reading
    3. Study Hall ( work on something)
While we were doing our journals he took role. Thats pretty much everything that happened in class today.

    Next scribe is Raphael G

  • Andrew Safaie

Hey guys sorry about writing the scribe do late but I completely forgot to do it. So anyways we started the class off with a journal about a Ted Talk with a guy named Mike Rowe. He is the guy from The Deadliest Catch and Dirty Jobs and he talked about how doing things the easy and morally correct way is not always the best way to do things. Rafael said that hard labor gives a better understanding and view of things. Ms. Lahaise agreed and added that people have enough time to go the gym but not to mow lawns. We discussed this topic for about 20 more minutes then we talked about the book we are going to read.

She explained that due to the dislike of the book by so many, we will no longer be reading Into The Wild and we will start reading The Grapes Of Wrath. The book is basically about a societal thread and a family fitting into the society, and it is based on a true story that John Steinbeck had with a family.

The Lit Circle groups are as follows:
    Pierro, Mary, Nadia, Nikki, Gal
    Markus, Jonah, Jasmine, Andrew, Oscar
    Shawnee, Hike, Linda, Leslie, Sydney
    Elizabeth, Vlad, Ani, Ripsime, Breanna
    Rafael, Corey, Fernando, Kayley, Rachael
    Gina, Ritter, Denise, Vince, Dana

Since there are five people in each group, we will be using the Word Watcher role instead of Summarizer. Finally, remember to bring your Into The Wild to turn in.

And the next scribe will be Ritter.

    Hello 6th period!!
    Today unfortunately, Ms.Lahaise wasn’t
here. But, we did get to have Mr. Nomachi as a substitute, so there was
a plus! We discussed the english classes that are being taught for
seniors next year. We then read ” An Occurrence At Owl Creel Bridge” by
    Ambrose Bierce.
The next scribe will be Leslie O.

  • Ripsikchavchyan

Hey there everyone! Guess how many people didn’t show up today… 13! Can you believe it? That means at least 13 people better be reading this. But luckily we didn’t do much, we just took the weekly vocabulary quiz and did a journal. For everyone who missed the quiz the make-up date it tuesday at nutrition. The rest of the day we just had “free time”. I wish everyday could be like today.

Lets all guess who the next scribe shall be
A pretty little miss who loves to scream
She is nice and sweet and sometimes naive

That was lame… her name is…

    Lynda Rodriguez

  • Nadiaadeleon

Today we had a substitute Mrs.Gold. There was a journal on the board. Then we did an activity and we had a fire drill. The next scribe is Leslie.

  • Kaylie0496

    hello everyone
today when i walked in everyone was talking loudly while mrs.Lahaise was trying to get our essay tests ready. Then she asked Mary to collect our chapter 7 and 8 homework. Seconds later Mr.Nomachi came in as well as people from other classes. Mrs.Lahaise asked if people needed to go to the bathroom before the test. When everyone was back she handed us our test booklets. We then took the test for 45 minutes. When she collected the test we discussed chapter7 and 8. As well as quotes and what we like and dont like about the book. We then had a little time to talk to people and that is what basically happened.

    3/6/12

Today we started off by taking our weekly vocabulary quiz.
After the quiz we did a journal which was a freewrite.

While we finished our journals Ms. Lahaise talked to us
    about a few things

-Hopefully we began thinking of stories for our outside items.
These will count for our blogs next Monday. Anyone who wasn’t here the day we
picked our items will just do a regular bi-weekly blog.

    - Ms. Lahaise is in the process of doing 5 week grades for 5th
and 6th period. If you have a D or F in the class it will show up on
your report card, otherwise you will receive a slash.

-Right now Ms.Lahaise doesn’t know where the practice EAP
essays we wrote are because she just moved. But its Ok because these were just
practice and we all already know how to do them.

-Tommorrow is the actual EAP essay test. If you are absent
for it tomorrow you can come at period 3 or 5 on Thursday to make it up.

-When writing your essay, BE SURE TO EXPLAIN WHAT THE WRITER
    HAS SAID!

Then Mary collected the journals that were due today. After
that we got the new vocabulary words. Remember to check the calendar because we
have HW due tomorrow! Also remember that Ms.Lahaise will not be here on
Thursday or Friday so Friday Ms. Gold will be our sub!

The next scribe will be Kaylie

  • BreannaM

Hello everyone! Happy Friday!Well today when we entered class we got started with our usual routine,

-We did a journal and had discussed that, and because of confusion journals will be turned in next week.

    - After the journal we silently read for a considerable amount of time or so it had seemed.

For a change we did something really interesting today after silent reading because the class seemed quite “dead” today.

-Ms. Lahaise gave us 120 seconds to go outside and to bring back any interesting object that we found.

-After those two minutes we all shared what we found. The cause for all this was to give us a subject to write about our next blog.

-The next blog that we will be doing will be a creative writing about that object we found.

If you were absent today this does not apply to you and you will do the blog just as we’ve been doing them.

-After that fun discussion we talked about the EPT prompt and how it is graded. We also read an example essay and got to practice scoring it. Along with that we also did a peer edit with our first essay.
-For those that are worried over the prompt next week don’t worry because just by viewing the example essays, we are more than ready to do this just as we hve been told.

To end the day Ms. Lahaise said that she will be sending an email to students about next week so make sure to check those out later.

Today’s class was interesting and fun :)
the next scribe will be Sydney

    2/29/12
By the way everybody, I was told at the END of class that i was the scribe.
As I was running to Ms. Lahaise’s room I was hoping for a miracle that I would not be late. Luckily, there was a note on the door stating that the class will be held in Mr. Nomachi’s room. So I ran there. I end up arriving to Nomachi’s room with everyone else, and sitting with everyone else too.   Mr. Nomachi started the class of by saying, “If you have anything that somewhat resembles a human conscious you remembered to bring your Literature Book.” Of course, me being the worthless peasant that I am, didn’t bring it. So he proceeded to call me and a handful of other students “worthless peasants” (interesting insult) and eventually gave us older versions of the book. We opened our book to the story “To Build a Fire” and than Mr. Nomachi began talking about the differences between Realism and Naturalism. Basically, Realism is the an attempt to realistically portray life as is, and Naturalism is more like an exaggerated form of Realism.  After digressing a bit and saying a few things I don’t plan on repeating anytime soon, Mr. Nomachi surprised us with another essay. This topic, in my opinion, was much easier than the first one. We were given a short passage from a book about Michael Jordan. Although I thought it was easy, I spoke to Jasmine about it after because she sat in front of me and she completely disagreed with me saying she liked the first topic better making me very sad :( but whatever.
The Bell rang and the students rejoiced again.
The next scribe would be Fernando but I broke his computer so the scribe will be Ritter

  • elizabeth

    So today in Ms.
Lahaise’s class we took a vocabulary test as usual. Prior to that she
collected the homework that was assigned from the literature book. After the
vocabulary test we did silent reading and then watched a TED talks from their
youth series. It was about how media is changing for the generation of the
future and was targeted toward a teenage audience. After watching the TED we
did a quick journal on it and had a discussion about the purpose of the
speaker. That was all we did in class today and bring your literature books to
class tomorrow because we will be using them. Next scribe is Hike :)

  • Jasmine A

Hey everyone! Since Elizabeth was not here today, I have been chosen to do the scribe. Yay
Today, 2/24/12, we started off with something new and out of the blue. Many of you may remember while others would have forgotten all about this fun activity. We have revisited yet another survey based on our personality/intelligence! We used these an 11th Grade Contemporary Composition Course and it had the same concept as the one we did online except we had to write it down rather than simply clicking our answers.

2 weeks from today, there will be an EAP Test. The test will be taken place during Ms. Lahaise’s class on March 7th and 8th (Wednesday and Thursday). If you are not present on those days, you are unable to retake the test.. Therefore, please be there to take this! There are no make-ups. If you know ahead of time that you will not be present on the 7th, please notify Ms. Lahaise. You will be able to take it on the 8th but unfortunately, Ms. Lahaise will not be present for she will be attending a meeting at that time. If you do plan on taking it on the 8th, it is preferred that you take it during 3rd or 5th period.
After she had told us about this testing dates and the possible situations, we began talking about writing the essay.
This is how your essay will be judged:
First of all, the graders will understand how much time you have when grading the essay. The graders will be paying attention at the whole essay rather than by pieces. Remember, quality > quantity.
Here are some concepts that should be in your essay:

    1. You must respond to topic (Surprisingly, many people don’t usually do that)
    2. There must be an understanding and use of passage. *Claim and proof*
    3. Have quality and clarity of thought
    4. Have organization, development, and support.
    5. Syntax and command of language
    6. Grammar usage, and mechanics.
If this was an actual AP essay, here are tips on what will get you at least a 4.
(You must be adequate to pass!)
    1. Address topic
    2. Demonstrate general understanding
    3. Topic is simplistic
    4. Good use of syntax and language
    5. Have some errors.

We then had to do a practice essay about the topic of Mead’s argument about how we are taught to look up to those who have high grades, are more attractive, and etc rather those than who have a special talent, work as a certain profession or live in this specific community.
I’m not quite sure what it was exactly but it was something of those lines.
We had a huge discussion about the topic which seemed to be never ending.

When it finally came to a stop, Ms. Lahaise informed us that on Tuesday we will look at actual essays based on the topic we wrote about. We will also be going over chapters 5 and 6 of “Into the Wild.” Please bring in the work that was due for these chapters. If you did not bring it in, you can still get late credit for it! It’s better than nothing.

VERY IMPORTANT:Remember how we were suppose to be taking notes in class? Well it just so happens that taking notes on the topics we have in class actually helps you out when writing essays! This will give you actual experiences and ideas to mention in your essay!

You will also need your literature books for homework.
You will not need it on Tuesday but please bring it in on Wednesday!
The next scribe will be Elizabeth since she was suppose to do this one. Have a good weekend, everyone! (:

    2/22/12

Hello fellow classmates.  Today in Ms. Lahaise’s class we started off by
switching seats. We’ve gotten Markus as a new student who switched into our
class today.  After that we took our vocabulary
test, and as we finished we had silent reading as soon as everyone was finished
with their test. Make sure to log your book down on the calendar sheet!!  Ms. Lahaise brought up two important announcements.
The first one is about presenting your books in front of the class. Don’t wait
until the last second to present it! Get it over with by presenting it right
when you finish the book while it stays fresh in your head. No more than two
people promoting in one day, and the whole project is due before June 7th.
We later did new words so make sure you get them!

The second important announcement was about the AP testing. If
you scored basic or proficient in 10th grade, and this year you get
advanced or a proficient, then Ms. Lahaise will bump your grade up one letter grade.
In order for that to happen, make sure you show her proof, so don’t throw
anything away. On March 7th, we take the first part of the EAP test
for Cal State Universities. If you got placed “not ready” then you will be
placed whatever you test into. Ms. Lahaise has a lot of confidence in us and
knows we will be placed “ready.”

The Essay is almost exactly like the SAT, it will give us a
passage or a quote and asks us to explain it.

After the lecture, we watched an unusual TED. His name was
David Blaine, and he does things seemingly possible to do. He takes lots of
challenges such as standing on top of a 360 foot building for at least 20 days.
David Blaine said, “As a magician everything is possible.” At first I thought
he would be doing magic tricks but instead he did lots of challenges that we
would be impossible to do. He would purge every morning because he did a
challenge where he would hold his breathe to break the record. David told us
when we hold our breathe, don’t move otherwise you will lose energy and can’t
hold your breath as long as you could. He would eat small portions every day. He
stayed underwater wearing a wet suit and his feet were strapped on the bottom
of the glass tank. David felt a lot of pain on his chest and got out of the
water and held his breathe for 17:04 seconds! New record!

After the TED, we did our journals for about ten minutes.
Oscar started out by saying, “It was good stuff.” And Rachel continuing saying,
“he’s ambitious and nuts.” I agreed with what they both had to say.  Denise had said, “He was dedicated to the cause.”

Ms. Lahaise added on and said, “If you do it for one thing,
then you are a pro in anything.” Which is true, when you put enough dedication
in something, then you will be great at it.

The last five minutes of class Rachel was confused about our
assignment for our lit circles. The assignment is to always make sure to argue
the other side of something. We all got to make sure to think about it as the
worst book you ever read. Don’t forget to do the homework assignment due Friday!
    Chapters 5 & 6!

Oh and DO NOT clean up while there is still enough time in
class until Ms. Lahaise says so!

The next scribe is Elizabeth!! Enjoy! [:
