Per 6 Scribe Posts

  • Cori B 2/17/12

To start things off, sorry for the one day late scribe post!!
On friday 2/17/12, we started the class off with a mind boggling quote for our journal. “The way we see the problem is the problem.” – Stephen Covey. After we wrote our journal entries and had our silent reading time, we began to discuss the quote as a class. Period 6 had a lot to say about a journal? whaaaat? yes. It is true. Rachel started it off by saying something along the lines of “Maybe it’s how we shouldn’t always be looking at the problem, but we should be looking for the solution instead.” While Rachel thought this, others felt that it’s the actuality of seeing the problem and that we shouldn’t see problems as problems at all. If we see a problem and think “I can’t do anything about this!” then we will convince ourselves that we can’t do anything. There is a solution to EVERY problem. These are just some of the thoughts that our class had discussed. Unfortunately I failed in writing and remembering all of them. sorry once again
After we had our long discussion about the Journal, we started to talk about Into the WIld. Since we didn’t talk about chapter 3 and 4 last class, we talked about it this time. Ms. Lahaise asked us what our groups talked about. Raphael bravely started off the discussion asking what black boxes were. Turns out, it is simply illegal free cable. Other than this question, a lot of others commented that they don’t like the book so far and found it “boring”. After all these comments about the book being “boring” created an idea that popped in Ms. Lahaise’s head. She asked us to see only chapters 5 and 6 as a bad, boring book, find what we find boring and reflect off of it and explain what we wanted or planned on happening. I’m not sure if that is the EXACT assignment but she said she will have the assignment up this weekend. Oh right, may i add through out the whole class period. Ms Lahaise and Mr. Schultz were having students go back and forth with vocabulary they thought each other wouldn’t know :P

Next scribe is Mary Haddad :) have fun.

    2/15/12
Hi there. Hope everyone had a good day today.
Horray! Lahaise is back! Today she started the class off by asking if we were ready for the quiz but before the vocabulary quiz was given to us she started of by planning something new for the scribe post, it did not apply to me because she was unsure how she was going to apply it yet. Vlad suddenly leaves for an excuse that was not audible. As Ms. Lahaise was getting ahead of herself she stopped herself and we took the quiz. After the quiz it was collected along with our literary circle roles for chapter 3 and 4. We were next assigned to do a journal that was written on the board and once done with that we were to read a choice or our book silently.
After everyone had their quiz collected Ms. Lahaise mentioned a few things on getting a gift because everyone except one student had gotten full credit for the Lit. Roles. She also touched on key points on how she was adding something new for the scribe, for the Lit. Roles, and for the class. After quickly checking our Lit. Roles, Ms. Lahaise passed back the papers and we went into our groups.
Few minutes passed after discussing chapter 3 and 4 with the group members, Ms. Lahaise starts to talk about the new changes. First off the scribe. She is still unsure but she wanted to reduce the scribe activity so that only the absent people should be looking at the scribe post, which leads to the next topic in change. Note taking was added into the class. It was never a requirement before in her class but thought it would be better for the students to learn and understand better. From this Friday on Ms. Lahaise is expecting for notes to be taken in class, and she will be randomly checking notes individually. Also, earlier, she had mentioned that the Lit. Roles should be 5 of the role whether you are Discussion Director, Illuminator, Illustrator, Connector, or Summarizer. For example if you are connector you have to connect 5 things or answer 5 of the questions the role, maybe even mix them together but it must be 5 in total for each chapter.
Elaborating on the note taking. Some key points on taking notes that were discussed in class would be things you don’t understand, things you didn’t know before, key concepts, things you might forget, review the notes [on the same day], and summarize the days lecture/lesson/etc. I wanted to add something that wasn’t discussed which is to write the notes neatly because if the notes aren’t written neatly enough the notes would be put to waste because they are not readable.
Two types of note is the formal Cornell Notes and the unorganized way is Mind mapping.[Mind-Mapping is where the topic is in the middle and you branch out into different bubbles and each branching out gets more and more specific to the subject.]
Ms. Lahaise talked about note taking and the blog post all in one so if you were not able to catch both of them I am separating them. Blogs are not to only summarize what you are reflecting on. Give your opinion on it. It is not bad to summarize the item you chose but your blog should not only be a summary. It should be your opinion. Reflect on it and express what you have to say for it. Don’t forget to read the instructions for your blogs.
This Friday we will be given the assignment of the Lit. Roles but we changed roles today.
Thanks hope you enjoyed. The next scribe will be Fernando F. :)

Hey guys its RitterCriter.Today when we walked into class and we saw that we had a sub Ms. Hammond. As the bell rang for class to start ms Hammond told us she needed the class to be super quiet for two minutes so she could take role. After she finished taking role she told us what our agenda was and we listened quietly.
    AGENDA:
    1. Journal Free Write
    2. Silent Reading
We did all these things super quietly in class.
That was all that happened today folks, Have a nice day.
    We missed you Ms. Lahaise
    next scribe well be Raphael

    2-10-12

The class began with Ms. Lahaise reminding all students that
if they have yet to bring in their Gatsby books and that it would be silly for
them to be unable to walk the stage for graduation due to not returning a six
something dollar book.  She regrets to
inform the class she is still not feeling well and does not have much of a
voice.  We were told to be on our best
behavior, because she is in no mood for unnecessary distractions.  The various literature circle roles were
quickly collected. She went on to say that we could choose one of the two
quotes from the board, but she was quickly corrected that we were suppose to
    watch a TED on brains.

The TED talk that we were about to view was described as one
that we would either love or hate.  The speaker’s
voice was told to the class to be annoying, but even with that out of the way
she was a different kind of presenter.
Then to get past that, Ms. Lahaise suggested that we might need to watch
this particular TED several times.  She
gave her own experience as example, that she had seen this TED many, many times
and still did not care for it, and it finally took a student to convince her of
its worth.  The particular argument, or
insight that said student offered was not shared at this particular juncture,
and the class moved forward with the lesson.

The class is instructed to write the journal on this TED
using exactly six words (alluding to the TED shown only one class ago).  Instructions are then halted as a student
(Mario) enters; the time is 1:13.

The class resumes at 1:20, with the hastened starting of the
TED.  Ms. Lahaise at this time had
stepped out of the class room to talk to a student.  During her absence there were a few
inappropriate comments about the speaker’s voice.  The speaker is a middle aged woman who is
sharing a very intimate recollection of her life, leading into an even more
personal story of a stroke that she suffered.
The TED ends at 1:38, and the class moves on.

The literature circle write ups were promptly passed back to
the students, with directions not to lose them, because they would need to be
passed back in to have the grades recorded.
The class was told that more is expected of them this semester, and for
the most part the jobs they have been doing on theses assignments have not been
enough.  For an example of how to do an
illustrator position well two great examples were said to be Andrew S. and
    Hike’s work.

Then we move on to our impressions of the TED.  Raphael begins the discussion by saying that
he did not care for this TED, and Ms. Lahaise added that that might be because
we might not be used to seeing that much emotion in a speaker’s
performance.  She says that amount of
emotion, especially at our age is uncomfortable to view.  Gal adds that he did not understand the talk
when he had seen it for the first time, but upon seeing it a second he now
understands the message and importance of the speech.  Dana agrees with Gal that she also did not
care for it much her first viewing, but came to like it the second time
    around.  Ms. Lahaise poses the question;
how many people know someone that has had a stroke.  The response is almost half of the classroom,
and she adds that maybe isn’t it a pleasant thought to know that they may have
    experienced nirvana.  Vlad ends the
discussion with an excellent observation about how all of the emotion may have
clouded the intention of the speech, but the message at the end was powerful
enough to overcome the awkwardness, and make the talk alarmingly profound.  Ms. Lahaise commended this comment, and added
that Vlad had done a very good job in articulating himself.  She herself, acknowledging how amazing the
ending of the TED had been.

The brevity of the discussion seemed to amaze and frustrate
her as she exclaimed, “What happened to my talky sixth period!”  The class exclaims that they never talk, and
Ms. Lahaise corrects herself and says that we have good discussions.  Then Gal asks what the woman in the TED’s job
title was.  To which Ms. Lahaise responds
something along the lines of “some crazy science job.   Ripsime corrects her by stating the
    profession was “intellectual neural anatomist”.

The instructions are then that silent reading will be at the
end of class, but before that we will get into our literature circles.

We break off into groups at 1:52, at 2:01 group discussion
    ends.

We then share the discussions we held as a groups.  Ani begins by stating that it seems that the
terrain in the book was difficult to overcome and navigate in groups, with all
of the travelers being in groups, and therefore must have been that much harder
as this man braved the trail alone.  One
of the questions for the author was why did he put the ending of the story in
the beginning of the book.  Nicole
proposes that maybe it is the journey, but what will come next.  Maybe how it all started?  Fernando adds the important note that no one
went to help him immediately after seeing the SOS note in the bus window.  The class seems to have stopped
    participating.

Ms. Lahaise asks who else the discussion directors are.  The group members tell her that one left, and
various other reasons that the discussion directors are gone.

Ms. Lahaise brings up that she had just finished reading
this chapter when that PE bell rang.
There were many “sure”s and groans from the collective class, but she
went on to say that she had read the book several times and seen interviews
with the author.  The reason for the
death of the main character in the first part of the book is history that is
the story that people know.  The story
people do not know is the, why?  What
made this privileged young man fracture into a wild man is the reasoning of the
author.  To cause a renewed interest in
“what was the motivation behind this” (Ms. Lahaise).  Thoreau could tie into the motivations she
says, or perhaps it is his over privileged life.  A student puts forth the idea that what he
learned at school could have influenced him.
Ms. Lahaise goes on to say that the author has all of Chris’s dairies
and that the story is a little bit of a tale mystery.

The next two chapters of the book are assigned for
    homework.

Silent reading begins at 2:10, and the book being read must
be added to the list that Ms. Lahaise has.
2:46 we are to stop reading and put our books away.

She asks is anyone reading anything good.

                Vlad says
    he is enjoying Secret Bible.

                Vince
exclaims that he loves Good Omens (to
which Ms. Lahaise responds that      she
    has been reading American Gods).

                Raphael was
recommending his book about vampire ninjas (the title of which I      missed)

                Gal had
good things to say about Killing Lincoln.

The teacher is upset that we are reading books that we do
not think are good, due to the fact that no one else wants to share their
books.  This leads her to the idea that
instead of fat paragraphs we will need to sell our books to the class.  There is uproar from the class, suggesting
that this is not an idea they are excited about.

The idea remains, not written in stone, that there will be
two book selling presentations and no writing of fat paragraphs.  Justification being that collage has
presentations in front of hundreds of people and they are not all your friends,
    the class needs practice.

Class ends 2:58, with the promise of homework for Wednesday
    being our literature circle roles.

Fun day, the next scribe will be Ritter.

  • Hike E.

Good day students.  We kicked the day off with a vocabulary test, which proved to be easy if you did take the 20 minutes to study them. Like usual, we had a nice chunk of time for silent reading.

When the tests were all collected, Ms. Lahaise passed out a sheet of paper on which we were required to write down the book, the author, and the date we began to read the book. The book that you write down will be the book that you should read during silent reading time and it should be the subject of your future Fat Paragraph. If you do not like the book, you may change it to a different book but you must tell Ms. Lahaise and she will write down the new book. The purpose of this book list is so Ms. Lahaise knows that you have been reading for her class, not just making something up after reading 5 pages of it, hence the section on the list that you must write the date you finished the book. We are lucky that we don’t have to keep a weekly book log as we did in elementary school. To clear up some confusion about the book list, the books do not have to be from Ms. Lahaise’s room, they must be appropriate, and they must be books that you are currently reading. They cannot be books that you are reading for an assignment in a different class and it certainly cannot be “Into the Wild”.
After the book list, we received the new words, if you did not get them you need to ask a classmate, because I am not authorized to post them.

The class was assigned the groups for the Literary Circle assignments that we all so dearly missed. Here are the groups for the “Into the Wild” roles:

    -Ripsime, Kaylie, Dana
    -Linda, Andrew, Denise
    -Nadia, Vincent, Nicole
    -Jasmine, Pierro, Ritter
    -Ani, Shawnee, Leslie
    -Breanna, Rachel, Fernando
    -Gina, Elizabeth, Sydney
    -Vlad, myself, Mary, Gal
    -Rafael, Oscar, Jonah, Cori

*Sorry if I misspelled your names*

**If you have any problems with your group, tell Ms. Lahaise in a CLANDESTINE manner**

There are a few rules with this round of Lit Circle roles. Groups of 4 people are only allowed to have a Discussion Director, an Illustrator, a Connector, and an Illuminator. Groups of 3 can only have a Director, an Illustrator, and a Connector. These are the only rules. Try to get them done, we have one for chapter 2 of “Into the Wild” due on Friday. Get in touch with your group to find out your role if you were absent because we had time to choose our roles in class today.

Today the class also broke to streak of not watching TED Talks. The talker in this one was Sebastian Wernicke speaking at a TED in Zurich, Switzerland. He spoke about TED Talks in a TED talk and he mentioned how there were too many TED Talks to fit in your head. He made some calculation and came up with some ridiculous triple digit number that represents the hours required to watch 1000 TEDs. He said that they should be shorter and referenced to Ernest Hemingway’s 6 word novel, “For sale: baby shoes, never worn.” He mentioned shortening TEDs to 6 words each, then categorizing them, then reducing the categorized words to 6 words and then finally reducing 1000 TEDs to 6 words. The 6 words that represent 1000 TEDs are, “why worry, I’d rather wonder.” This 99.9% reduction cost him $99.50 on some “mechanical Turk” website that I did not quite comprehend but he payed 10 cents per reduction of TED. This will lead to a TED on Friday which we will have to reduce to just 6 words as our journal. Ms. Lahaise warned that it is more difficult than it sounds.

We then watched a 1997 “20/20″ clip on the subject of “Into the Wild,” Chris McCandless. It was pretty long but here are some facts that the author’s note or rest of the book does not provide.

-He was born to a wealthy family and went to top notch schools and graduated at the top of his class in high school and university.
-At a young age he was captivated by Alaska, and his hero was Jack London, the author and explorer.
-His first signs of something like this was when he became captain of the cross country team. He would lead his team into the forests, get lost, find their way back, and sprint home at full speed.
-After graduating college he left his family and renamed himself Alexander Supertramp.
-He adventured and lived life to the fullest but also hit some rough spots.
-After a while he stopped even sending letters to his family and cut off all contact.
-After a period of negative events, Chris got a job and settled with a surrogate family in Carthage, South Dakota.
-He left again later, got to Alaska and sent his final letter that we saw in the book, went into the wild, and died after over 100 days in the Alaskan wilderness in his 20′s.

Towards the end, we had a final group presentation. This group had a utopia based on sub aquatic structures with some land for agriculture. This was a free society as long as you do your work. It ran on a council of elders and had genetic brain alteration to create super intelligence. If you do not like fish, do not join. If you like steak do not join either because there is no red meat. If you have any questions contact the 4 elders; Ani, Ripsime, Cori, and Shawnee.

The last thing we accomplished was the acquisition of our copies of “Into the Wild.” As a warning, these books are in pristine condition and if it comes back messed up, you will owe Ms. Lahaise a new book.

The next blog shall be Vincent since he was supposed to do this one.

    That is all, Good day.

  • Shawnee.D.

Hey guys.! Ok, so for those of you that were not in class today, expect to see a new face, and welcome new Pierro.!
We switched seats today. Ms.L. talked about grades today, and just fyi, Fat Paragraphs were not included in the 20 week report card. She graded all blogs_That is 40% of your grade, skip 1 and that is -10%. The most important thing is to have a link attached to what you are writing about [it does lower your grade if you don't.] Cutting down on the minimum requirement is also bad. . . . Starting Wednesday, there will be a new rule concerning the books we read during silent reading time [check with Ms.L to see what is appropriate to read in class.]
Ms.L also explained what she would like to see in our blogs this semester:
    Blogs:
    - “Analysis or Opinion.”
    - “Analyze&Reflect.”
    - “Do not summarize”_ {taking some information from the article is acceptable though}.

Student: “Can we grab some quotes from other blogs?”
Ms.L.: “Yes, but have a link to back it up.”
Student: “Can I do my next blog on the Suber Bowl?”
Ms.L.: “Yes. Remind me I gave you permission.”

Presentations: Gina, Vlad Mary, and Gal’s Group presented. . . .”New Centrum” !
    - Eco-friendly.
    - The utopia is divided into 4 sections.
    - Career Centers: To help decide which career fits you best._.[Learn about different professions for 16 years]
    - Technology is powered by Solar, Wind, and Water activity.
    - “Suntrum”= back up energy supply .
    - When entering the utopia, you are given a bracelet, that includes personal information; Bank account, social security, ect….
    - Housing is provided at no cost_ Hard work moved you up.
    - Laziness is not allowed!
    - No Pollution! No Violence!

    - Pathos: Housing made people in the audience emotional, and how they put you with people that mesh well together.
Also, text Nicole for the vocab words if you need them. The test is Wed.!
Well that pretty much wraps up our day. Bring Gatsby Books back if you haven’t already!
Our next scribe is Vince.H. Good Luck!

Seat changes will be on Monday!
We had our vocab test which was on the trickier side. Ms. Lahaise told us that we have to look for context clues on our vocab tests.
Lucky us, we don’t have to bring our literature books until told to do so by Ms. Lahaise.
IMPORTANT REMINDER CONCERNING VOCAB TESTS-you MUST put the title of the test on your paper as well as the date. Remember that if you don’t put an ID on your vocab test, it’s a zero!!

Our journal topic was “Wise men are not always silent, but they know when to be.” -Anon
    We then had silent reading.

Next we continued our Utopia presentations.

After the presentations of the day, Ms. Lahaise pointed out that almost every single group mentioned population even though she did not ask for that. She then continued to tell us that the population explodes (yes she did use sound effects) when you have more children.

And now for the fun stuff:
-Your homework is due on SUNDAY in your HW DROP!
-The 2 groups that DID NOT present do not have to do question 5. However, you have to do it AFTER you present.

Hey you guys,  Okay so today we had a pretty simple day.
Sadly Ms. Lahaise wasn’t here today because she is sick, but we had the wonderful Ms.Gold.
A the beginning of class she told us as soon as we walk through the door to get our Lit. Books.
After everyone was settled down in the class we got started as she explain that we were going to read Into The Wild & that we could not keep the books or write in them do to the fact that we only have a class set. She said if you wanted to do your own notes and highlighting you needed to purchase your own copy. After reading the intro of chapter 1 we discussed what we thought it meant, and why we thought so. then we went along and got a worksheet with questions for the chapter. Everyone went crazy asking who was the scribe, and finally I just offered.
    - We all read the chapter and answered the questions.
-Then we had to read pgs. 496-497 in the Lit. Book
After our little discussion Ms.Gold said that it was all for the day and that we were a really good class.
The bell rang, and everyone rushed out of the room in an orderly fashion of course.
check The Calender !The next scribe will be Rachel Katz. ((:

    January 10, 2012
Wow, I have to start following all these rules regarding the scribe! SADFACE! …. Just kidding, they’re easy! (I’m just happy i dont have as much to write about as Agapi! poor girl!!)

AAAAAAAAAAAaaanyways.. Today we started off with a word from Mrs. Lahaise… “Get into the habit of coming in and starting the journal without me telling  you!” Hear that everyone?? Get to it!!

Our journal today was “How far would you “go” to support something you believed in?” We had about 20 minutes to finish up the journal and do our silent reading. After that we had a class discussion about the journal. It was a little difficult for the class to put ourselves into a situation where we would have to go to an extreme to protect what we believe in, but soon we got the hang of it. Nicole gave a good example that if someone was cutting down trees “I would tie myself to the tree!” Somehow from there the conversation migrated to parenting. If you saw a parent yelling at/ hitting/ neglecting their child, would you step in??? Ripsime gave a good example, when she and her mother where at a store, they heard a woman yelling at her child, Ripsime’s mom went up to her and told her to stop and the woman responded with a “get out of my life!” Well… at least she tried. Most of us in that situation would have just walked on by. But then I had a thought… “What if she was having a bad day? Or what if there are family problems at home?” You can never judge a person based on what you see in one instant, no matter how bad it seems.

The journal today was based on the reading we had to do from “Resistance to Civil Government” by Henry David Thoreou so it was easy to transition into the story. Thoreou wrote of how he thought the government should rule, “not at all.” He believed that humans have a moral guide that would keep them from doing wrong and so there would be no need to have a government, we could govern ourselves. But as Vincent brought up, not all people are nice, there are evil people in this world. And so as much as Thoreou’s idea is appealing and pleasing.. its practically impossible to achieve. As Mrs. Lahaise said, “Not all people have their moral guide set to ‘perfect’.”
Mrs. Lahaise promised that “We are not done with Thoreou! We will visit him next week.” So everyone keep that in mind! More Thoreou coming up!

Once that was done, we were assigned to get into our Utopian Society groups and continue our work.

***We have all of Wednesday next week to work on the Utopian Society! everyone make sure to bring your tools and ideas!

***The project is due on Friday January 27th! THAT’S NEXT FRIDAY!

***Also we should have some homework due on Wednesday so everyone make sure to check the calendar and be on the lookout for that.

Hey everyone here goes my second scribe post (:

Today was a typical Wednesday, we finally have the lovely Ms. Lahaise back.Welcome back Ms. Lahaise!!! (:

As the bell rang and the students rushed into their seats Ms. Lahaise asked who the scribe was, since no one was sure I took on the responsibility to be your scribe today. Once I got out my pen and paper I started to take notes. The first things we talked about were the scribe posts from last week, Ms. Lahaise said that the scribe posts will be excused since she was absent. Since not very many of us look at the scribe posts there is a new feature on the website that allows scribe posts to be sent to your e-mail when you sign up, you may also add the page to your RSS reader. We HAVE to start reading these posts guys because there is a chance that we might start to have tests on them. We should check the scribe posts regardless because there is a chance that we may space out in class and miss something. Another very important thing BRING BOOKS TO CLASS UNTIL TOLD NOT TO!!!

In terms of grades Ms.Lahaise is working on them they will hopefully be posted by this weekend!Good news guys we don’t have a final, instead we we will be doing the Utopia project. Guys don’t forget we have TWO fat paragraphs due next Friday on January 27, you can find instructions on how to write the fat paragraph in the drop down menu of the info portion of the website.

After this discussion we took our vocabulary quiz [which everyone hopefully got an A on (: ]. When we all finished taking the quiz we got new vocabulary words then watched a TEDxWomen video, its a new version of TED and the speakers were three young women who won
the Google Global Science Fair (Ill post the video so you can have easy access to do your journal [: ).

After all of that my job got harder but I'm not complaining hopefully my notes are more than helpful. The instructions for the Utopia project:

**** EACH GROUP NEEDS TO SELL THEIR COMMUNITY TO THE REST OF THE CLASS!!!

    (1) First you need to decide how you're going to sell your community, you have a couple of options:

    - digital presentation
    - commercial
    - 3D model
    - brochure/ leaflet/ news letter
    - website
    - power point [try to use this as your last resort]

~ To find some help you can log into digo links then go into cool tools, then power point alternatives. The best one is probably PREZI, its the easiest to use.

    (2) Roderic is the art of persuasion, we can use these elements of persuasion for our presentations:

-ethos-> ethics~ form of persuasion appealing to a higher power. [ex. Say you should join our community because Justin Beiber says that our  community is the best.]

-logos-> logic~ form of persuasion using logical appeals. [ex. State logical appeals as to why they should join your community.]

-pathos-> emotion~ form of persuasion using emotional appeals. [ex. State emotional appeals as to why they should join your community.]

*** YOU MAY USE ONE, TWO OR ALL OF THESE THREE FOR YOUR PROJECT.

    * SELL THE THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY AND SUPPORT IT WITH EVIDENCE. [EX. IF YOU SAY THAT YOUR COMMUNITY DOESN'T HAVE WAR GIVE A  REASON FOR IT.]

    * YOU MAY USE A USB OR DVD TO BRING IN YOUR PRESENTATIONS

    (3) Think back to the learning styles survey, each person in the group will have their role based on their learning styles.

ex. -If you’re a math person the you can include and talk about all of the statistical aspects of your community.
-If you’re a music person then show the musical aspects of your community.
-If you’re a linguistic learner then you should do most of the talking.

***** The due date will be discussed on fridayyy!

That’s the end of today’s scribe post guys! Hope it was helpful! And remember marinate your chicken with lemon! {you’ll know what I’m talking about if you watched the TED} (:

HERE’S THE LINK FOR THE TED TALK GUYS

P.S. This time the next scribe will actually be ANI… good luck girly! :)

Hey people of 6th period, this scribe is for Friday January 13, 2012. Ok so we started off the day with Ms. Gold talking to us about an article she had read about how the UC’s and the CSU’s are more prone to accept out-of-state students because the students contribute more money. With that in mind, she suggested us to apply out of state as well saying that WE would be more prone to get in and get the classes we need. Then we moved to the Lit. book going from pg. 207 all the way through to pg. 224. We went over Emerson mostly, what his beliefs were, how he was the pioneer of the Transcendentalists, and looked over (again) some of his work. With all that done (and 20 minutes to spare) she gave us work book work to do.
1)Paraphrase the first paragraph of “Self Reliance” on pg.224 up until where it says ‘until he hesitated’
    2)Reading check pg. 228 A and B
    3)Connecting with the text #4 and #5
    4)Understanding Figures of speech #2
5)Trick or truth pg.229 A-D. But instead of following the directions given in the book, all we had to do was to answer if we agree or disagree with the excerpts (which are A-D)

Most of us did not finish but she collected it from us anyway after the bell rang. We miss you sooooooooooooo much Ms. Lahaise!!! We are all wishing you feel better and hoping you will come back soon.

P.S. The next scribe will be Ani

Scribe post by Vlad on 1/11/12, this is for today and yesterday:
Yesterday, 1/10/12, was a 30 minute day class. We were supposed to do the journal but Ms.Young came in to talk about colleges, universities, and a bit on the application. We got 3 sheets of paper about college and university information and Ms. Young was describing or summarizing what was on those 3 sheets of paper. We didn’t get to do the journal that. Today, 1/11/12, we also did not get to do the journals. When class started Ms.Young came in and said there was a Harvard representative and she would like her to talk to us so she brought her over to the classroom. The Harvard representative was a freshman and she describe what was university life like. She also said how the administrators pick their students and apparently only 28% of applicants get accepted into Harvard each year. Then when she left we had about an 1 hour left of class. We still did not do the journal so we had free time. We wrote down the journals or we were told to write it down, some kids took pictures instead of writing them down. That’s it, that was the whole 2 days.

I pick Oscar as the next scribe 

    Hello Everyone! (:
As soon as the bell rang for class to start, a discussion immediately took place. It started with Vlad asking Ms. Lahaise whether or not it was true that SOCES was going to stop bussing students. The reason why he was curious, was because he had received a letter from school saying that LAUSD is planning on stopping busing. That topic got the whole class talking about how teachers would receive pink slips, how much debt LAUSD is in, and how SOCES may not be standing in a few years. We will only know the answers to our questions when we come back to school from winter break. This conversation amongst the class lasted approximately twenty minutes. Afterwards, we watched a Ted Talk (Rick Warren), and wrote a journal. When we finished writing in our journals, we did a bit of silent reading. Ms. Lahaise told us to set our books down after some time, and we began discussing the Ted.

-Agapi said she heard about a woman in Europe who gave about 14 million dollars to her cat when she passed away.
-Vlad said he bought Rick Warren’s book, and that a hard copy costs approximately $50.
-Ms. Lahaise said that one of our duties are to go to school and learn, and “Live your life with a purpose”.
-Denise said that she really liked when Warren said “our belief determines what you know or don’t know.”
-Vince said “Warren’s book being sold hit a world record, but who is really reading it? Where is the change?”

We got really off topic during the discussion:
    - Vince asked “Ms. Lahaise, why are you a vegetarian?” Ms. Lahaise replied “I went to college, and you change drastically as a person when in college. I took an environmental and philosophy class. The environmental class talked about destruction of environment, and the philosophy class talked about destruction of people. The three Cs are cows, cars, and chainsaws. South America cut thousands of trees with chainsaws to get cattle. Methane comes from cows, and it played a big part with what was happening with the ozone layer. I read a book written by John Robins, that talked about the slaughter of cows, chickens, etc.”

After the discussion had ended, we talked about “Economy”. Lots of students thought reading this section was pretty boring. Ms. Lahaise was talking about the book, and said people in the olden days used to think that houses had souls.

When we were talking about “Economy”, three guys came into our class that had graduated SOCES last year. They started talking to Ms. Lahaise, and asked why her phone was broken. They also asked if they can have their Great Gatsby essays back from last year. The guys told the class we’ll never get ours back (haha). Michael Serra is Jose Sunga’s cousin… who thought we were all 8th graders…

As we came closer to the end of class, we talked about having a party on Friday, and to finally finish watching The Great Gatsby.

Lastly, we got into our groups and came up with some ideas for our Eutopias. Ms. Lahaise wanted to know what kind of government is set up in each group’s Eutopia. Ms. Lahaise wants us to start thinking about how we’re going to have to come up with a justification. If a city was walled, what’s the justification for that? If your government is democracy and communism, what’s the justification for that? If you have an army, why do you need it in your Eutopia?

Come to class with your books everyday unless Ms. Lahaise says otherwise!

The next scribe will be Vlad. Mwuahahaha cough* cough* (:

    Hey guys (:

Today was a pretty normal Tuesday. We took a vocabulary test followed by a journal and silent reading. We got new words as well.

Regarding grades, Ms. Lahaise told us that most of us will be receiving slashes, except for a few. These few exceptions were regarding blogs. She explained that if you do not post the link of your source, you get 50% off your blog grade. She also reminded us that despite her being busy, she still skims our blogs for content so posting a random recipe won’t get you the grade.

She also apologized for not having the homework posted up earlier, ( We forgive you, trust me. ) but we should read our literature book (check out the calendar for details) and be prepared to answer questions tomorrow.

    That’s it (:
The next scribe is Nikki ! <3

Dana’s Scribe from 12/9/11 (lateness is my error):

    December 9 ,2011:
    Hello everyone!
We started off the day with our daily journal. We had to do our journal based off of the spinning wheel which chooses three words that we have to write a paragraph with. The three words we had to use were abduction, fairy, and skyscraper. Lahaise made the comment that we should be original with our journal and not do a remake story of Peter Pan. After our journal we did silent reading and passed up our Emerson Nature homework from Wednesday. We had to end our silent reading early today because we could hear some music playing in the classroom over and it was distracting to the non-musical learning style students. :D

Then Ms. Lahaise informed us of some important news.
-First, Ms. Lahaise told us that she posted the new learning styles quiz under the Info tab which is located at the top of her website. It will be under the name Learning Styles Quiz.
-Second, the LahaisesLair website will be down during the weekend due to some maintenance. As a result she will be emailing us our homework and it will not be posted on the calender. We were also informed that if we needed to get to something on the website to email her.

We then discussed the questions from our Emerson Nature homework. I am sorry in advance that I wasn’t able to get everything down that we discussed. Keep in mind that I had to paraphrase everyone’s comments because I wasn’t able to write them all down fast enough.
    The discussion :
-Ani told the class that she believed children see nature as something more while that because adults have seen nature so many times that they tend to overlook it.
-Vince said that adults don’t see the profound side of nature. If they look at nature all they see is the physical appearance.Vince also made the point that we are not culturally taught to appreciate nature. We have been taught to look at nature and see what resources we can extract from it.
-Denise said that as we get older we learn to look at nature logically whereas younger children see it artistically.
-Then Ms. Lahaise pointed out that life keeps us too busy to appreciate nature. We have no time to just simply lay down in the park and point out all the animal shaped clouds in the sky.

Then Ms. Lahaise asked us whether or not we thought nature was benign. We had a little bit of an issue defining what benign meant. Some dictionaries lead people to believe that benign meant unnoticeable. Ms. Lahaise cleared it up by stating that benign means harmless. Ms. Lahaise once again had to remind us that we should not talk to our neighbors when someone else is speaking since it is disrespectful.
The discussion (regarding whether nature is benign) :
(Once again I am sorry that these are incomplete. This is only a snippet of our discussion.)
-Hike stated that he believes nature is not benign since natural disasters are harmful.
-Vince made the point that anything bad that happens is part of nature. For that reason nature is not necessarily harmful. He also stated that we are all a part of nature.
-Briana said that nature is benign. She said that if anything is harmful it is our fault because of our ability to not adapt fast enough to nature. Ms. Lahaise strongly agreed with her.
-Gina stated that she believed nature is benign. I wasn’t able to catch the whole thing but she made the point that natural disasters are a part of the cycle of life. Also that we are the ones that harm nature.

Afterwards we all turned to pg 226 in our Literature books and Ms. Lahaise read Onward to Utopia to us. Ms. Lahaise told us how people have attempted to create Utopian societies. This all tied together with our group project.

    Group Projects:
-There will be one group of 3 people and the rests will be groups of 4s.
-Ms. Lahaise will choose our group members. ( Group lists will located at the end of this post)
-Our task is to create our own Utopian community.
-We will come up with a name for our society.
-The society must be in the present day.
-The question we must keep in mind while doing this is “What is the perfect society to you?” & “What elements are needed to create an harmonious society?”.
-There will be both a written and visual part to this project.
    - We will need to establish the following in our society:
    1. Government. We cannot create a whole new government. We can take elements from different governments that we like and make it into your own. For example, you can create a government that has a mixture of republican and communism ideas.
    2. Food. Figure out how the people in this society will get their food.
    3. Shelter.
4.Clothing. Where do your people in this society get their clothes from and what do they wear.
    5. Misc. Any other ideas you can come up with to add on.
    6. Laws/ consequences. Ms. Lahaise is unsure if we should use this.
-Ms. Lahaise told us that she will later come up with a written outline for this project. She also told us that this is her first time ever doing this project. So we will be her guinea pigs!
-Keep in mind TO BE REALISTIC while doing this project.
-Next Lahaise choose our group members by pulling our names out of a bowl.
    -These are the follow Groups:
    -Denise, Andrew, Ritter, and Oscar.
    -Shani, Ripsime, Ani, and Cori.
    -Mary, Vlad, Gaul, and Gina.
    -Ellen, Fernando, Sydney, and Jonah.
    -Jasmine, Linda, Elizabeth, and Nicole.
    -Hike, Vince, Leslie, and Brianna.
    -Rachel, Nadia, Agapi, and Dana.
-We got into our groups for the last 20 minutes of class to discuss the projects.

The next scribe will be Denise! :D

    Hello, there!
So today we began the class with a little bit of studying before our weekly vocab test. Ms. Lahaise believes that ever since the school took out the one minute tardy bell, many of her students come to her class tardy. (Instead of vice versa) So from now on if you are late to class she will make you go do paper pick up and you will be marked tardy. So after the vocab test we did our journal and then a bit of silent reading.

Then we jumped straight into today’s lesson. We were comparing our scores from the diagnostic test. She made the class raise their hand for the highest one they scored in. There was a good portion of the class who were linguistic and a few from logical or mathematical. But when it came to intrapersonal and interpersonal most of the hands flew up. And as for naturalistic there was not so many hands…

Apparently the website was not so reliable or rather not very accurate. So Ms. Lahaise will be linking us to yet another website where we can retake it.

Here is what Ms. Lahaise interpreted for each of the possible results:
Linguistic → Someone who learns best from listening or reading it out in fine print. Mostly likely someone who likes to talk and read. Has good recall when it comes to text.

Mathematical → Prefers step by step directions. (ie formulas) Approaches a situation logically.

Visual → Someone who has to see it in front of them, such as a drawing. Can analysis a picture and prefers it over text. Such as when it comes to spelling a word they have to write it out.

Intrapersonal → Someone who knows their self rather well. Does not mind being alone and can entertain themselves.

Interpersonal → Good relationships with other people. A social butterfly.

Musical → Someone who can study with music and most likely walks around with a song stuck in their head.

Body → Learns by movement. Probably (if told) can take a toaster apart and put it back together…. (Or something of that sort)

Naturalistic → Probably better at science (such as biology) Likes going out in the woods to explore. Loves being in nature and is likes animals.

Why is this all important? Well because when we enter college we are given the option to chose our professors and classes. So based on our scores we can apply it to our learning styles vs the professor’s teaching style.

And this is all going somewhere! We are going to have a project in the near future based on transcendentalism. And based off our results from the diagnostic our assignment is going to be each somewhat different.

Then Ms. Lahaise talked about the exert we were suppose to read by Emmerson. She did not collect the questions that were suppose to be due today. We are to hold onto them and turn it in on Friday. Along with a couple more questions she is going to post on the calendar. For those of you who only read it once, wait twenty-four hours and then read it again, a second time to see what else you got out of your reading. Then answer the assign questions and bring it to class on Friday along with your books!

The next scribe will be Dana! :D

We watched a Ted but before that lots of people left the room because of club pictures. Only half people watched Ted. After the Ted, we wrote. Journal and some people read after they finished. We discussed about the Ted. Mrs. Lahaise talked about the online quiz that tells you what kind of learner you are. You have to make sure to do the quiz before class and bring the result so we cqn discuss it. Also make sure to bring your Literature book until she tells you not to.

Hi guys! In the beginning of class Ms.Lahaise collected the mandalas and the chart with the adjectives which described one of the characters you’ve chosen. After that we watched a TED and did silent reading. Sadly because of the mess students have been leaving Ms. Lahaise has chosen to change the eating policy, so we are now unable to eat during class. We brought our Literature books and talked about “transcendentalism” starting on pg. 206. Also this is a reminder to start bringing your Literature books everyday until Ms. Lahaise tells us not to. Before transcendentalism art and literature were very concrete but after they were based on nature. We turned to pg. 210 and read the “A Closer Look” which is in the red box on the top of the page. Because transcendentalism is so confusing Ms.Lahaise suggests to re-read the pages or articles if you are unable to understand and keep in mind that the authors are from a different time period. The homework will be on the calender. We also have to figure out what kind of “learning style” we have by going to a website which we also be linked on the calendar and bring the results on Wednesday. In the future there will be a research project. Because the substitute was vague about the dear reader essay we needed to write for our mandalas it has become extra credit and can be turned in before the winter break in the homework drop or in class. Lastly Ms.Lahaise has put all our Gatsby essays through the grammar check and can be checked at turnitin.com. She has decided to do what she had explained in the beginning of the year by choosing random parts of the essay to grade such as the conclusion, thesis, introduction, ect.

    The next scribe is Gina.

    Scribe post by Fernando 11/30/11
    On November 30th 2011
We really did not do much at all, we walked into class and had a sub, i think her name was Ms. Golds or something. Ms. Golds got us working on our Sun/Shadow mandalas. Everyone was working on them with their friends but they were still getting it done i think. So that’s all we did for that Wednesday. There is also no homework due Friday according to the calendar.

Hello Period 6 class!!! This is the last scribe post for the class before we restart the process over again. Let’s Begin.
As we walked into class there is was a bit of confusion whether or not we would be doing our vocabulary test. But we resolved the problem and did in fact do the vocabulary test. But before we started she explained to us how we can turn in our paper on turnitin.com if it is not working. Any word processing program will have it for it to work.
    HERE ARE THE STEPS:
    1. Go to print and press it. and
    2. Instead of printer go to ADOBE.
    3. Title what you want the title to be and save.
    4. Now turning papers into turnitin.com will be much easier and less stressful.
After the explanation we went on with the test and after we were done did the journal. The journal entry was:
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, its time to pause and reflect”- Mark Twain
    ***ATTENTION***
    1. We got new vocabulary words today so if you were absent get them from a friend.
    2. We also moved seats today, so when you come in make sure you don’t sit in your past seat unless you to be sat on.
    3. And finally, REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR TEXTBOOKS and CIRCLES FOR GATSBY TOMORROW!!
That is all folks, til next time!
The chosen one is Fernando. May the force be with you :)

    Hey guys!
I walked into the classroom with my 20 pound bag digging into my sholder and quickly sat in my seat squeezing through the crowd of students finishing up their conversations as class was about to start when I was notified that I was the scribe today. So here it goes, my first scribe post ever! Here is what happened today:

Initially today Ms. Lahaise was supposed to talk to us about essay writing but unfortunately we did not have enough time since today was a 2:00 dismissal day, so we will talk about it next class. Great news guys the due date for the Great Gatsby essay has been moved to SUNDAY NOVEMBER 20, 2011!!! We briefly talked about turnitin.com and peer reviews (which will be due next Tuesday/ Wednesday November 22/23). Studies have shown that peer reviews make people into better writers, ours will be on turnitin.com, we will go into more detail about this topic next class. A revised version of our essays will be due Thanksgiving weekend. Remember guys our first draft of the Great Gatsby essay shouldn’t be a first draft at all, so as we turn it in we should think of it as our final draft and make sure we do our best! Make sure to turn in the first draft of the Great Gatsby essay guys otherwise there is no way you can get an A on the final draft! Ms. Lahaise suggested that we go an get familiar with turnitin.com before the essay is due to save some time on SUNDAY. We weren’t the only ones who had things postponed the teachers did as well, grades were originally due last Thursday but then the due date was postponed to Sunday and later to monday but then Ms. Lahaise was told that they were actually due Sunday, anyway the moral of this story is that Ms. Lahaise had to submit grades in a hurry therefore she took the grades that we had on jupitergrades.com and looked at our blogs, if all blogs were submitted then the student kept their grade, if not their grade dropped. Ms. Lahaise told us that hopefully she will have time tomorrow to grade our blogs during her conference period! :) She is having trouble coming up with a grading scale because many people have not done all four blogs. Generally blogs are given a grace period of 24 hours in case your internet stops working or your computer bursts into flames as you log in to do your blog, so if the blogs are 24 hours late then its not such a big deal. After this discussion we went on to watch a TED and do our journals. The speaker was Marco Tempest, the TED was called The magic of truth and lies (and iPods). The TED was about deception or the act of deceiving and how it is a fundamental part of life, we all do it for one reason or another, to others and even to ourselves. Mr. Tempest was trying to show us deception in a new light. After watching this TED one of Ms. Lahaises classes from a few years ago decided to make a pact not to lie for 1 week, at the end of the week there was only 1 person who claimed not to have lied at least once during the week, but who knows she could have been LIED…. Guess what! There is more good news! Our vocabulary quiz # 6 may be thrown out because Ms. Lahaise accidently threw away the key, so there is no way to grade them. Many people are missing their journals and chapter 3 of Great Gatsby I suggest everyone goes and looks at the papers near the door because there is a chance that your papers may have ended up there because there was no name on it… I’m telling you from personal experience ;) . Ms. Lahaise suggests that we check the syllabus in order to find out what our participation grade is made up of, if we only participate 50% of the time then
our grades will be lower, participation is a huge part of this class, so come on guys lets speak our minds but keep in mind there is also negative participation which we should avoid. Tomorrow we will take our vocabulary quiz and then get instructions for our essays. No scribe for tomorrow, the scribe I pick will be the scribe for next Tuesday. Be prepared to take lots of notes tomorrow guys! And they lived happily ever after! :D

    The End (:

    { AND THE LUCKY STUDENT THAT WILL BE OUR NEXT SCRIBE IS SHAWNIE!!! GOOD LUCK! }

    What’s up guys,
So today was a Wednesday and when we first got into class, everyone was panicking to study for the vocab test, since we only got the words yesterday. We all thought majordomo was a funny word. No matter how much we wined, Mrs. Lahaise said that when she taught in South Korea, her kids had to learn 50 words in a day so we should not be the ones crying about it. Anyways, we finished our test when she reminded us that we should have sent the blog urls for our homework as two separate links. Then we all started on our journals which was:
“I have noticed that if you look carefully at people’s eyes the first five seconds they look at you, the truth of their feelings will shine through for just an instant before it flickers away.” – Sue Monk Kidd
You could interpret that any way you want and write it in your journals. As we always do, we had some silent reading for about 15 minutes. Then she gave us a new set of vocab words with the test on Wednesday, and later on we started getting into The Great Gatsby. Yay! We finally made it through this whole book! We got into our groups and discussed Chapter 9 for about 10 minutes. She told us to get out of our groups to discuss the chapter as a class. All we basically got out of that was that the consensus of most of the class suggested that this last chapter was unnecessary because there was no major plot advancement after the death of Gatsby, other than his funeral. We talked about the funeral and how nobody went because Gatsby did not have or want friends because all he wanted was Daisy, so he wanted to impress her. This discussion lasted for 15 minutes, until she told us that we were going to do a simple writing assignment. She told us that we had to write an evaluation of the lit circles, our groups, and whether it was helpful or not, in comparison to having homework submitted online and an in-class discussion only. We did this until 2:45, and that was when she finally told us that we were going to have an essay writing lesson on Tuesday, so make sure not to be absent. She let us go for the last 15 minutes. And that’s it.
The next scribe will be Agapi T.

Today class started of by Ms.Lahaise asking who the scribe was,and I said it was me. She told us that we were going to watch a Ted on a women named Eve Ensler. Ms.Lahaise said listen carefully she is talking to girls but she’s talking more to boys. She also said to focus on who her audience was and what her purpose was.! So the video started and once again Ms.Lahaise spelled out Eve’s lasted name but the side of the classroom closer to the door said that it was to dark to write.
Oscar suggested that they write it anywhere and fix it later. As the video starts the first thing that Eve says is that we are going to talk about “the girl cell”. She tells us she is going to talk about what we have done to the girl cell that we have crushed it.That we should pretend that the girl cell is compassion , venerability, passion, she told us what it meant to be a boy it means to not be a girl. That to be a woman or leader means not to be a girl. She shared a story with us she said that when she went to a hospital in, Kongo and that group of girls lined up everyday and that they told her the things that men use to do with them, cut them open, rape them, sell them, crush them. Though out the whole video she basically said that we as girls and boys should embrace our inner girl. after this wonderful video finished we went on to do our journals and to to read. Oh but first we passed up our homework so Ms. Lahaise could check it off. After we were done with our reading we went on to discuss our journal. Nicole went first and she said that she thought her purpose was to not be afraid to be emotional , Ms.Lahaise said that in part yes but not quiet after Vince,Oscar ,Agapi and Denise shared there ideas which were all very good and all had to do with what Eve was saying. Shawnee finally got it and said that she was going for change. After that Ms.Lahaise said if we had any questions since we didn’t she went on.Before we got into our groups Ms.Lahaise talked to us about how we are doing our roles, and how we need to include more into them give them more thoughts. Then we went on into our groups and discussed chapter 8. Finally we went to our original seats but we were running on short time and Ms.Lahaise gave us the new words and Denise said if they were for tomorrow and she said yes. GASP! Then she went on to tell us that we had to choose two blogs to be graded and that we were only going to get graded on these, she told us that not all of us had a comment on our blog but that we should not worry. Then she asked Vlad if he had any questions he said yes & it didn’t end well, she suggested that he follow instructions. She reminded us that this was an honors class. Then the bell rang we all went on our separate ways. Remember to do your homework. Which is if you are to lazy to check. The 2 blogs ,chapter 9 for Gatsby and if you were here the vocabulary. So today in class, we quickly went to our vocabulary test. We were told that after the test we needed to do the journal from yesterday if we hadn’t already. We also had another journal to do. The question was “at what point is loyalty too much to ask?”. Remember, you can also do a free write if you don’t want to write about the given topic. A common theme in class today (and unfortunately for many other days) was the lack of participation. We were reminded today that we get 10 points for participation, so PARTICIPATE!!! Another reminder- it gets cold in Ms. Lahaise’s room so bring a jacket if you’re going to get cold! We then got into our discussion groups for chapter 7 of Gatsby. After that we had a class discussion about it. Remember to BRING YOUR BOOKS ON FRIDAY for an in class assignment. We will be getting new vocabulary words on Friday.
The next scribe is…(drum roll please)…Nadia!

Welcome to Ripsime Chavchyan’s 2011 first ever scribe post! This Tuesday was a 12:33 p.m. dismissal so there was only about 30 minutes of class. When we walked into class, Ms. Lahaise immediately told us to sit down so we can get started on the Ted Talk because it was pretty long (21 minutes and 58 seconds long, to be exact!). However, before we started Ms. Lahaise told us if we are not present in class, our literature circle homework is still in effect, so make sure to get it in (or else its going to be late)! Then we got started on the Ted Talk right away. This Ted Talk was so inspirational and motivational. The speaker’s name was Aimee Mullins and the Ted Talk was recorded in October 2009 at Ted Med in San Diego, California. She is such am amazing woman. At the age of 35 born on 1976 in Allentown Pennsylvania. She is an American athlete, actress, also she is a fashion model. She is mostly known for her amazing athletic accomplishments even though she has a medical condition that has resulted in an amputation of both of her legs. She looked up the word disabled and was astonished on what she had found. (For more Ted Talks go to TED.com.) Ms. Lahaise told us we will do the journal tomorrow and talk more on this tomorrow. So for the people who weren’t here today got to this link (http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/aimee_mullins_the_opportunity_of_adversity.html) and you should be up today in class. Don’t forget we have a vocabulary test and the literature circle.
P.S. – Ms. Lahaise doesn’t like when the announcements interrupt her especially when it’s a 30 minute class period. And then next scriber is … wait for it… keep waiting for it… Ms. Lahasie I am just joking it is… Rachel Katz!

    Hey period 6!
So this is the scribe post for friday 10/28/11 done by Cori :)
We started off the class by listening to an audio of a story told by Ophira Eisenberg. This story was briefly about this woman when she was 8 years old, her Mom got in a car accident with Ophira and her friend Adrian. Unfortunately, her friend Adrian didn’t live through the accident. After the accident Ophira went through surgery and after her recovery, people kept telling her that she was so strong. She later realized that it was her parents that were the strong ones. They kept their emotions inside so it wouldn’t put stress on their young daughter.
Before we started our journal, Ms. Lahaise pointed out that if we ever disagreed or didn’t like the speeches that were shown we could always do a free write journal entry. After we wrote our journal and did some silent reading, we got to talking about the story and what interested us and what didn’t.
For the rest of the period we got in our groups for our literature roles for chapter 6 of The Great Gatsby and talked about the chapter.
ok guys have a good weekend :) and make sure to wear your costumes monday!
    next scribe is Ripsime!!!

  • oscark

Ms. Lahaise started out the class period telling us that #2 and #3 of the questions we did for homework, go together, as this was very valuable information for those of us who did not do the homework (myself included). She also told us that if we don’t understand one of the questions she gives for homework, we can always turn it in blank and come to class the next day with the question.
Next, we watched a T.E.D on how young men become suicide bombers.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aoGJP02CtPA <—link to the T.E.D) Ms. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy told us that there are 5 steps to creating a suicide bomber. Step 1: Find a young child from a family that is poor and offer an incentive for taking the child. Step 2: Teach the Qur'an in Arabic so the children will not be able to understand. Translate it to them in a twisted way so there will be religious justification for what is or will be done. Step 3: Teach the child to hate this world. Beat them and make them suffer. Step 4: Have the older members of the Taliban teach the younger members of the glories that await them in the after life. Lakes of honey and milk, unlimited food, and 72 virgins (not specified what kind). Step 5: Propaganda. Send them messages showing the world and the terrible people who live in it, then show them what they can do to help.
After the video, we responded to it in a journal, took our vocabulary test, got new words, and then we started to discuss the video. Ms. Lahaise asked us to think "What purpose does her speaking serve?" and many responded that she was basically a reporter telling us the facts, educating us about what is happening. Shawnee then summed it up by saying "She doesn't ask for help, but for understanding". From the Taliban we moved to Gatsby.
Ms. Lahaise reminded us once again to look at the different essay prompts that we will be doing that the end of the book. Then she asked us "Why are we making judgements on the characters? What purpose does it serve?" Many thought it over and then Gina answered "We learn to take those skills out in the real world." Ms. Lahaise added to what Gina said "Correct! This is teaching you to not take things as they are, put to piece them apart and understand why." We spoke of chapter 5 and the symbolic meaning of lights in the chapter. Then Rachel told us that in her sisters book she had highlighted the "shirt scene" and wrote to the side "WTF". Ms. Lahaise dashed over to her phone and told Mr. Nomachi to come to our classroom and act out the shirt scene "He does a great interpretation of it" Ms. Lahaise said. So Mr. Nomachi came and read the scene before he acted it out, and then preformed the scene infront of us with a wonderful Southern Bell Accent and made us all laugh.
After he left, we go into groups of 4 and created Literary Circles. Ms. Lahaise explained that we will all get a turn to be different things in the circle. She added that we will be doing this with chapters 6,7,8,and 9 For more information go to http://lahaiseslair.com/information/documents/ and scroll down to the Misc box, it is the first document. Keep in mind that this page takes a while to load. So come to class ready to present your Lit. Circles on Friday, when the scribe will be Ripsime. :D

So today Ms. Lahaise was absent from class. All of the students were elated when they heard the news because that meant no vocabulary test for us, no offense to Ms. Lahaise :) As our sub we had the lovely Ms. Gold who was oh so passionate about The Great Gatsby. She talked about Fitzgerald and his use of literary devices which made the book one of the most important pieces of American Literature. Then she gave us our assignment which no one really understood because it was based on an abstract quote, “the fundamental decencies is parcelled out unequally at birth.”(Page 1) So she broke this quote down for us – fundamental meaning foundation or base, decencies referring to decent qualities, and parcelled meaning to divide or distribute and she let us interpret it by ourselves from there. For the classwork we had to state whether or not we agree with this quote and explain why, then we answered a couple more questions: (1)What kind of man is Nick? (your opinion based on what you’ve read so far) and (2)How does this relate to the advice his father gave him? At the end of class, Vlad willingly collected the papers because he’s a benevolent, over-achieving student.

Next scribe is……..Oscar. Good luckkk :P

“Will this touch our hearts?” -Vladik
Today we started of with a TED Talk about human trafficking. As Ms. Lahaise had warned, it was quite a depressing video. Sunitha Krishnan told us the stories of 3 children. Pranitha, Shaheen, and Anjali. All three children had been victims of rape at the ages of 3-5. Pranitha and Anjali had been sold off by their own parents, and no one knows who Shaneens parents were. Sunitha then goes on to tell us that she herself had been raped at the age of 15 by a gang of 8 men. She explains that 99.9% resist being trafficked and are brutally hurt or even killed. The rest suffer every day by the hands of men. “We are living amongst those men” she says, “and we are silent about them.” Sunitha has rescued 3,200 women and children and she says that each of them tell similar stories of how they were used and abused. She needed to get out “the power from the pain”and to understand these girls to help them. She works with these ladies to restore dignity and build hope for the future. Yet he says that her biggest challenge is to get people to accept them. “They need your compassion. They need your empathy. They need your acceptance.” She ends her story on a very depressing note telling us that 2 children of the 3 she had talked about earlier had died of AIDs last year.
After this we spent some time writing our journals about the video then we discussed them as a class. Some students even shared their own family experiences with trafficking.
Later on we discussed Chapter 4 of Gatsby and what we learned about Gatsby himself. It was said that he was “soooo cuuutee” but also that he was a shady character. Gatsby tells us about himself but what he says is hard to believe. Why? Because its a lie! Ms. Lahaise made it very very clear that all of what Gatsby was telling Nick was a total lie and we as a class are naive for believing it all. But honestly, why wouldn’t you believe such a cutie? Moving on, we started watching Great Gatsby chapters 1-3 and our assignment during the movie was to write down the differences from the movie to the book. There were quite a few that we got which included that Murtle was a lot skinner then expected (as were all the girls), Tom was “nicer” then he seemed in the book (although that didn’t really make much of a difference, hes still a jerk!), and that Daisy was a lot “dumber”. I didn’t notice the changes as much as I noticed the dog grow TWICE its size every time we saw it! After some 5 minutes talking about the changes it was almost time to go, so we all sadly packed our bags depressed that we have to leave our beloved class, and as the bell rang we slowly walked out waving our heart-filled goodbyes to our lovely teacher.
Remember to check the site everyday to make sure you get all your homework in on time!
The next scribe will beeeeeeeee……….. Elizabeth! Just because i know shes half asleep most of the day. (: <3

As bells begin to ring more frequently and classmates start arriving with increasing consistency. Vince, then admitted to being the scribe. Mrs. Lahaise then addresses Vince telling him that there is a lot that is happening today but she is most certain that he will have little or no trouble writing the scribe. Mrs. Lahaise begins talking about the day, and class officially begins at 1:11pm.
Mrs. Lahaise counts us off and addresses the class with kudos as she explains that it is the first time in years that a class has followed instructions. She gives directions to the class project as follows:
Each group will receive an image from chapter 2 of The Great Gatsby.

Sketch some visual representation of the scene. The back of the paper or another sheet is fine.

She clarifies by saying that she wants the quote to be dialogue that represents the scene.

Write a short explanation of the idea

The passing out of the scenes will be random
She then second guesses herself and decides that we should do everything on the back of the paper not on another sheet. The class has not yet settled from the group move, so Mrs. Lahaise says, “1 2 3 all eyes on me” 1:17pm. Jokes are made but are not funny enough to bother writing. She tells everyone that she is in the process of grading blogs, and that she has done many but not all. She also talks of how she will send out an email of instructions of how to make our links at the bottom of the page more attractive to readers. Agapi raises her hand and is called on, and tells of how she made the links better but now they do not work. No real help is offered by Mrs. Lahaise at this time because she does not know enough about the situation. Ripsime raises her hand and is called on, and asks about not receiving a comment on the first blog. Mrs. Lahaise responds by saying that she is getting to it. Mrs. Lahaise also says that she is not going to name names but some people have been titling blogs incorrectly. Vlad makes a comment that I could not make out, but by Mrs. Lahaise’s response it was unhelpful. She says that Vlad has titled 2 blogs incorrectly, but he claims he has only done it once.
    Class, “No!”
She tell the class that only 20 to 25 minutes will be given to complete the assignment. Vlad still insists that he has correctly named one blog, and it is still loud. Vince asks if she would like a quote or dialogue, and she responds that either would be fine and they could be from the paper we were given. The Class works and a 2:07 we are all told to go back to our seats. The presentations begin and play out as follows:
    1. Group doing the soot by the rail way as they describe it.
    2. Group explaining a description of Tom’s love apartment.
    3. Group seems to have the same quote as 1st but refer to it as the valley of ashes.
    4. A group presents the description of Myrtle.
    5. Group then did the changed Myrtle from when she changes clothes.
    6. Nick and Tom’s venture to the auto shop was the subject of another group.
    7. The eyes of the doctor looming over the valley were yet another extension to the valley of ashes.
    8. The group presented Myrtle’s outburst of not ceasing saying Daisy’s name.
    9. The final group had the abuse scene, where Tom strikes Myrtle.

Mrs. Lahaise informs the class that we all did good jobs presenting, and that she
would like to talk further of chapter 2. She goes on to say that she Read this book 3 or 4 times before you liked it, and that it was the scene of the ash valley that made her love it. She asked what the description of the valley meant. Gal said, “Ruined” and a mildly impressed Mrs. Lahaise said something in the realm of sure, and then took other answers. The only other answer was From Rachel who began talking about how it represented hills and a farm. Mrs. Lahaise corrected her pointing out that this is the metaphor not the meaning. Mrs. Lahaise finally gives the answer she was looking for, that there is the East and West eggs and there is the valley of ashes. She tells the group that presented the doctor’s eyes that they did a good job, but that they missed that is was God watching over hell. Vince seemed disturbed by the idea of God watching over hell and what that meant about God. She then went on to reaffirm that the apartment group did a good job, and added on that the plethora of material possessions was to show that we as a country are materialistic. That is why Mrs. Lahaise believes the story to still be relevant in this day and age.
She then trailed off into a lecture about taking notes on what we read. She then proceeded to show us a book that an A student had filled with post-it notes. Mrs. Lahaise made claims that the book was not simple despite being so thin. She went on to say that we should go online and begin gearing our notes to the essays that we will be righting. She gave the example of the American dream essay and that the answer is that the dream is a materialistic one and we all want stuff. A stuff owning survey was attempted, but then later dismissed on the lack of participation. A good save by Mrs. Lahaise as she changed the focus to herself to drive the point home that we like stuff. Then the idea of Myrtle being stout and smoldering brought up Marilyn Monroe and her measurements, along with the 1920’s concept of curvy beauty. Mrs. Lahaise said, “Myrtle is sexy.” And then Vlad had some color commentary to add about women’s weight, which made the room tense.
The end of chapter 2 is discussed of how it was picture titles in a drunken haze. The garage was brought up by Hike and it was said to symbolize that Myrtle living above an automobile garage represented her feelings that her life was beneath her. Mrs. Lahaise said that Myrtle’s transformation that she made when changing close is very important. Also the H/W is up through November. Friday shall be chapter 1, 2, and3 of the movie The Great Gatsby. The Sheets where turned in, and then the class desended into chaos and the day had ended, 2:51pm.

*Please note that this post was edited by Mrs. Lahaise to exclude unnecessary commentary.

    Post from October 11
Today when we walked into class, we were all relieved to see that Ms. Lahaise was back. She started out by apologizing to us for not being here for the last few days and how she forgot to put up a sign on the door last Wednesday telling us what classroom to go to. She then asked us if we needed more time to finish the chapter 3 questions from The Great Gatsby that we started on Friday when she wasn’t here. We told her that we were working hard on the questions but we just needed more time. So, Ms. Lahaise passed our papers back to us and told us that they need to be completed by tomorrow. At this moment, Ms. Lahaise announced that our next vocab quiz will be on Friday and then changed the period 6 calendar to show this. After that, she asked for the one pager we did with the sub last Wednesday. Everyone complained that the directions were horrible, and so she only collected it from the people who were done with it. She said that because of the confusion, we can still bring it in tomorrow. She re-explained how to do the project and showed us all Andrew’s one pager as an example. After that, we took the vocab test that we were supposed to have last Tuesday. As Ms. Lahaise was passing out the tests, we started to hear cricket noises. Everyone began chatter about the cricket and the huge cockroach that we saw in our class last Wednesday. When we finished our quizzes there was a journal written for us on the board. For our journal, we had the choice of either doing a freewrite, or responding to the quote: “If everybody is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking.” – George Patton. As we were writing in our journals, Ms. Lahaise put up new vocab words for us to copy down. Near the end of class, a man knocked on our door and said he had to carry three tables into our room for the senior breakfast tomorrow.

The last 10 minutes of class Ms.Lahaise made a few important comments:
    -journals will be due tomorrow
-tomorrow’s journal will be a TED and the final journal
-she’s still trying to get through and comment on your first blog post
-you may edit your second blog post based on the comment you receive from your first blog post without being penalized
    - there was a post on the home page last night which we should read. Basically, the post says that our overall grade is meaningless until all the categories are accounted for. Right now the only grades that are up are for our vocab quizzes
-at this moment the bell rings, and Ms. Lahaise finishes by telling us that for our five week grades, we will all be getting slashes

Hey per.6 students Today in Mrs. Lahaise class she told us that the site might get messed up again so, just to be on the safe side she said that she would give us a link to the calendar and the HW drop. So this way if the site goes down again we would be able to see what the homework is on the calendar and be able to drop our HW in the HW drop too. I think she said she would email us the link. After the explanation about the site link thing we then watched a TED on Joachim de Posada about self disciplines with marshmallows. It was a pretty short and a funny TED, usually we would go straight to our journals to reflect on the TED but today was different we had our vocab test before the journal today. Once you finished the test you worked quietly on the journal until everyone was finished. When Mrs. Lahaise got all the tests she gave us a new set of vocab words to study. Oh and she told us to bring our Great Gatsby book, silent reading book, and our journals tomorrow(wed 10/19/11).
The next Scribe well be: Vince H

Hello children. Today in Ms. Lahaise’s class we had a substitute. The teacher told us what our agenda was for our class period. We started off with a free write journal for twenty minutes.
We did a semi-silent reading session for thirty minutes. Next, we started on our classwork. It was the same thing we did for homework (pertaining Nick) but instead of using Nick, we used Tom, Jordan, Myrtle and Daisy.
One thing that the substitute teacher said was that our eye is a muscle and you have to read everyday and comprehend what you are reading. If you don’t read everyday you will soon realize how slow you are reading. We should take advantage of what he said to us.
Over all it was an easy class and got through everything. We had some funny moments and for those that remember, “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?”…
next scribe is Ritter G :) have fun!!!!!!!!!!!

As I passed by Ani lying on the table in front Ms. Lahaise’s classroom, I was greeted by Lynda who had told me she was pushed into a bush. This was for sure going to be an interesting period.
The bell rang and we all got into our seats. Ms. Lahaise announces to the class she had accidentally done something wrong with the website and will therefore be under maintenance. Oscar proposed a plan, which I was unable to hear but Ms. Lahaise’s response made it sound like it was a brilliant idea.

We started class off with a TED talk, which was probably one of the most inspirational talks so far. Tony Robbins, who was also starred in a movie called, “Shallow Hal.” In his talk, he focused on the subject motivation.
    “What motivates you?”
-Motivation is an invisible force that drives a person to do what they want. This movement is what helps shape us.
He also mentions that an obsession changes a person. It shapes them to contribute to the goal that’s motivating them.
Fulfillment is an achievement! People with pain contribute to society! The past will equal the future if you are living in it!
Your decision is the ultimate power..
The only reason why some people fail in being motivated is because they say such excuses that involve time, money, or technology.
With emotion, one is able to do anything. Again, decision shapes your destiny. If you are focused on what you want to do, then you’ll feel that emotion. Meaning produces emotion which creates what we do. For example, Rosa Parks’ decision to give up her seat had shaped our culture.
It’s all about the psychological strength!!
So, what are you after? What is the target that shapes you?
There are different options that drives you.
The needs for your personality include:
    1. Certainty
    2. Uncertainty
    3. Significance
    4. Connection and Love
The needs for you spiritually include:
    5. Growing as an Individual
    6. Contributing to Yourselves
Be sure to prioritize your needs because that’s the direction you’ll be heading towards. No fulfillment=No contribution.
Emotion is main point for everything! There are 6,000 emotions in the English language but only 5 of them are the ones we like using.
He also mentioned to give it your all all day and every day. One should also always appreciate what drives people.

**Attention right side of the room (the one farthest from Ms. Lahaise’s desk).. Make sure to bring jackets because it will get pretty chilly on that side!

After the motivational TED Talk with Tony Robbins, we wrote in our journal about the presentation.
Someone had also sprayed a perfume or something in the room which had distracted myself from writing (it really did smell nice!)
We all know that our class is very quiet. However, we cannot keep it at this condition for there are consequences when people do not participate.
Class participation is a big part of your grade. No participation makes you have no chance in getting an A. So everyone start participating if you want that A!
After the journal discussion, we scurried along to The Great Gatsby! This is where we began to discuss the Chapter 3 questions, which should have been turned in at the beginning of the period.
As Ms. Lahaise had read the questions that were given, she had noticed we were not using the rhetorical devices correctly.
We also learned new words today..
Retoric: the art of persuasion. For example, the TED Talks. They persuade you by going out and making a change.
Irony: Expecting something to happen but the opposite happens. It could also be like a hypocrite. For example, If Ms. Lahaise tells you to not procrastinate and she is the biggest procrastinator of everyone else, that would be a form or irony.
We were also discussing the characters of The Great Gatsby.
-Nick is the narrator who “doesn’t pass judgement” and is surely not neutral. He adores Gatsby and finds him to be amazing and wonderful hence the title of the book, The GREAT Gatsby.
-Jordan is a compulsive liar who cheats during her golf games.
    DID YOU KNOW?
Golf is actually an acronym for…
    Gentleman
    Only
    Ladies
    Forbidden?
Vince has showed us that Jordan Baker is irony. She is a lady who plays a game for gentleman only!
-Daisy is a clever and wise person. She pretends to be dumb when she’s actually self-aware. She knows Tom is cheating on her but isn’t able to do anything about it (It was okay for men to have mistresses for it was very common in that time period.) She hides her feelings. She tells her daughter to be fool because she knows that if she is smart and aware, she will end up getting hurt.
-Tom is racist by agreeing to everything of the book that found white man superior than everyone else, he is shameless and abusive. He also has a short temper.
Then Ripsime brought up if the dog was ever to appear again in the story.
Unfortunately, it does not show up again but it does symbolize that Tom and Myrtle got it just for show. They could care less about it. “It’s just a thing.”
Another ironic thing occurred for Ani stated that Tom isn’t a loyal person but he buys a dog which are known for being loyal!
As Ms. Lahaise is providing an example for one of the answers, everyone is impressed by an unfamiliar word that she had used… “gallivanting”.
We discussed Tom and his incident with Myrtle how she was being annoying and the Gatsby discussion ended.

    Reminder:
    The website is broken.
If you are absent, please write about the TED Talk (which was about Motivation) or do a Free Write.
We collected our journals towards the end of the period. Please staple them together and be sure to have your name on it!
There is also no more reading until Friday due to some confusion of The Great Gatsby chapters.
Don’t forget about the Vocabulary Quiz that will be taken on Friday!

We were also given an assignment to do before we get to class.

It is called, “The Great Gatsby Character Sketch: Nick Carraway”

In each of the three* sections of the book find a specific incident that tells you something about Nick’s personality. Only one of the three can be direct characterization (Nick or one of the characters comes right out and describes Nick). Based on this event, come up with an adjective that describes Nick’s personality. The event you select should be typical behavior by Nick. Then provide some analysis of your section.

Some of the things you can say in your analysis might be an explanation of why you assigned this adjective for this behavior (unless it’s obvious), whether or not you admire Nick for this behavior, whether or not this represents a shift from earlier behavior, what you think he should have done, why you think he did what he did, or even whether or not you agree with a character’s description of Nick. Good analysis might include a mention of similar behavior by Nick in another chapter and thus strengthen your point or if it’s a shift in behavior, explain what accounts for it. Whatever the analysis, please don’t repeat yourself and try to make connections that are insightful and not obvious. See Ms. Lahaise if you need help developing an idea….

Each piece of evidence must be from one of the categories below with no overlap:
-Nick’s actions of failure to act
    -Nick’s thoughts or feelings
-Nick’s dialogue (or failure to speak)
    -Another character’s dialoague

You will need to do the following for each incident:
    -page number and chapter
-state whether it is direct or indirect
-state which category it is from (action, thoughts, dialogue, or another character’s)
-quote or brief summary of the incident
-adjective(s) that describe Nick based on this incident
    -analysis

FOR EXAMPLE (please do not use this)
    1. Page 24 Chapter 1
    Indirect
    Category: Nick’s action
Brief Summart: Nick ran away from a relationship when the gossips tried to make the relationship turn more serious by publishing it in the banns.
    Adjective: cowardly, heartless
Analysis: This wasn’t his only reason for leaving the Midwest, but the fact that he even mentions it shows that Nick runs away from problems rather than confronting and dealing with them. I think he should ignore the gossips and talk to his girlfriend about their relationship to make sure she hasn’t been expecting a marriage proposal. Instead he just leaves her but keeps writing letters signed “Love Nick.” He’s so afraid to tell her how he feels that he ends up just stringing her along, and that’s not very nice. She’s probably back home remaining faithful to him while he’s dating other women.

Whew. If you are still confused, please see Ms. Lahaise for further instructions.
Now I will give the scribe role to the one that broke her pen during our note taking and likes the heart shaped “ears”, Rachel K!

Today was another sad day… why? That’s because our teacher was out today x,C
Well our class period was rather simple:

    -First was our journal
The topic was “I go to school, but I never learn what I want to know”
    -30 minutes of silent reading
-Read chapter 3 of The Great Gatsby. Answer the 9 questions that were handed out (collected at the end of the period)

Remember to study for that vocab test we never took (by now we should be more than prepared), Make sure all of your Journals are organzed so they can be collected, and to complete the one pager assignment that was given to do on Wednesday.

Dont forget that our Bi-Weekly blogs are due on the 10th

That was how class went, we were restless, but got through it…

    Scribe post: Wednesday, October 5th

Today we arrived in front of room 503, finding the door surprisingly closed. After a few minutes, we learn that we have a substitute. After standing outside in the cold weather, Mrs. Rill told us to walk over to Ms. Wasserman’s room. After waiting outside for another few minutes, we entered a nice warm room where we found out there wouldn’t be a vocabulary test today. Then Cori and Mary explained to us our assignment. Our assignment was a One-pager:
-We were to connect our thoughts and ideas with “The Great Gatsby”.
To do this, we needed to include in our page:
    - Two quotations that you find between chapters one and two. These quotations need to represent the book in your point of view.
-A visual image, to be drawn, cut out of a magazine, etc. to represent the quotes and our whole idea of the book.
-Create two questions, and answer it.
-A personal statement about the book. This means you will write about how you like the book so far and explain why.
-A word cluster, which means a bunch of words that relate to the book and its concepts. (ex. green for money, secrecy, etc.)

As we spent the period working on our one-pagers, we realized class was almost over. Ms. Wasserman told us that she is going to let us take our One-pagers home, for she was too busy with other work to monitor us as closely as she would have wanted to. Suddenly, we heard a squeal from the middle of the room. We found a gigantic cockroach, seemingly minding its business and scuttling around the class. The guys proposed to kill it, as the girls tried to get away from the cockroach. Ms. Wasserman told the boys not to kill it, but capture it and take it to the rose garden. The boys did as told, and Ms. Wasserman said, “That by far goes in the books as the biggest bug I’ve seen.” The bell rang, and everyone went their separate ways.

Remember to bring your One-pagers and be ready to take a vocabulary test on Friday !

The next scribe is going to be Nikki Z. (O:

Today when we first walked into class we all discovered that Ms. Lahaise had moved the smart board and had rearranged all our seats. She told us that we could sit anywhere we wanted but by the end of the period we would all be assigned a new seat so we shouldn’t get comfortable. At the beginning of class Mrs. Young came to talk about the PSAT/ NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test). Mrs. Young gave everyone a Official Student Guide to the PSAT/NMSQT booklet. Mrs. Young discussed the following:
    PSAT:
-All 11th graders will be taking the PSAT next Wednesday, October 12, during an extended homeroom.
    -The PSAT test is free.
-Connecticut and Massachusetts are the only states that have higher scores than us on the PSAT.
-On the PSAT we shouldn’t be afraid to put our ethnicity down. It doesn’t hurt us, only helps us.
    SAT:
-It is not too late for us to start taking some SAT classes.
-During junior year, March is the traditional time to take the SAT.
-We can go to collegeboard.com to enroll for the SAT.
-If we decide to apply to Pierce or Valley it is not required to have had taken the SAT.
    - People in avid or who qualify for free lunch tickets should go see Mrs. Young for a fee waver.
    ACT:
    - Some of the ACT subjects are critical reading, English, math, and science reasoning.
    - Tips for the ACT and SAT tests :
-We can use calculators, either scientific or graphing.
-We should only make educated guesses because for every one question we get wrong we will be marked off one fourth.
-Always remember to skip the harder questions.
-We should all do practice tests in advance so we won’t be in shock when we first take the test.
    SUBJECT TESTS:
-Subject Tests are not required for colleges, only recommended.
-Some of the subjects on the subject test include: US History, Math 1 (Algebra), Math Analysis, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English Literature, and Spanish.
-Subject tests are given out on the same Saturdays that the SAT tests are on.

After Mrs. Young left Ms. Lahaise started discussing a few matters.
-Ms. Lahaise told us that in the spring we will have an opportunity to raise our grade in her class. ->She will raise one letter grade if a student who had proficient on their previous CST scores gets advance this year.
-Since we had 10 minutes left in class the VOCAB TEST WAS MOVED TO WEDNESDAY.
-THE JOURNAL DUE DATE WAS MOVED TO WEDNESDAY.
-Our homework for tonight is just to finish reading chapter 2 of The Great Gasby.
-Even though we do not have homework questions for chapter 2, A FEW QUESTIONS ON CHAPTER 2 WILL BE ADDED ON THE TOMORROWS VOCAB TEST.
-Our Biweekly Reader blog comments will be posted either Friday or Saturday.

After that discussion everyone moved seats. We all had to pick out a piece of paper which had our seat number from a bowl. Ms. Lahaise said that if you sit in the back of the classroom and you cannot see the board due to a eyesight problem she can move you to the front.

Then we went over some Biweekly Reader confusion. It was established that our next Biweekly Reader is due Monday October 13th. After, Ms. Lahaise told us that when we write our Biweekly Readers we must have complete thoughts.

That was it for our short period day and the next scribe is Denise Antonio! :D

  • hikee

Today, we started off the class with Fernando switching his desk due to the irritating noise it was making,

We then cleared up some confusion and established that our next Bi-Weekly Reader is due on the 4th of October.

The class then watched a TED Talk with John Francis.
-In 1971 John Francis witnessed a major oil spill which led him to become an ardent environmentalist.
-In protest, he stopped speaking and riding in motorized vehicles. He found that when he did not speak, he listened more. His end of speech lasted 17 years.
-He managed to graduate with a Masters degree through unconventional methods.
-His speaking began after he arrived at Washington D.C. on the 20th anniversary of Earth Day after 7 years and 1 day of waling across the United States.
-The point that John Francis was trying to make was that, “We are the environment. How we treat each other is how we will treat the environment.”

Following the TED, the class spent some time writing a journal that reflected on Francis’ words and then read silently after the completion of the journal.

People then volunteered to share their opinions on the TED and many had interesting things to say. The majority of the class agreed with John Francis but some people believed that his TED Talk was incomplete.

The class established that we must treat ourselves and others well in order for us to be able to treat the environment well.

At last, we spent the remainder of the class period discussing the 1st chapter of “The Great Gatsby.”
-Three important colors in the chapter were: green, gold, and white.

That was all for this period. The next scribe must be Dana K.

    Third, New Vocabulary

    Finally, Blogs
    A) Commenting on Others
    – At some point, it is required to comment on other people’s blog but

    journal]
    – Simple Blogging [linking to something]
    – Real Blogging [linking wth analysis & synthesis]
    – Complex Blogging [extended analysis & synthesis]
    5) Tags & Categories
    – You should start to categorize your blogs starting now so when
start to make more, you don’t need to change the whole thing at
    once.

    Something you should know=
    – DO NOT use the title ” Bi-Weekly Post”
    – Ms.L em@il – plahaise@lahaiseslair.com

    – We’ll talk about ” The Gatsby” on Friday.

    Okiedokie, byebye~~

Today was pretty straight forward for the most part, we begun the class with a little bit of studying for the vocabulary test. Ms. Lahaise then went on to say that our period did an awesome in getting our student survey signed. And she stressed for those who you that have not done so, your blog has been deactivated until those forms get signed. (That should be as soon as possible)
Once we finished our vocabulary quiz, we had a short period of silent reading. Then we went on to watch a short TED talk video, and the speaker was a nine to ten year old girl. Her name Adora Svitak, she was a very talented public speaker for her age. She talked about how adults looked poorly down amongst children and considered them to be childish. So also went on to say how children learn from adults, but it should also be the reciprocal, and that adults should also learn from children. After the video we wrote a journal reflecting what we thought on the TED video.
Afterward Ms. Lahaise gave us new vocabulary words for next week. She also announced the first book we were going to read was The Great Gatsby. Then we had a little bit of extra time leftover, so Ms. Lahaise showed us a biography on the author of The Great Gatsby, which is Fitzgerald. We didn’t to finished the video, but we will continue watching it on Friday.
There’s also a short homework assignment, so be sure to check the calendar for that. That’s basically all we did today and the next scribe I chose is Hike.

Fernando’s 9/14/11 scribe post (sorry it’s posted so late…it was buried in my e-mail)

Today in Mrs. Lahaise’s class we went to scan our books

When we got back from scanning books we started to watch a TED talk with Sir Ken Robinson
    Link here Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kdSHAO4Dw8&feature=related Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4Ko9P2_u3M&feature=related

After we watched the TED talk we started doing jounals reflecting about the TED talk.
During the journals Vlad’s phone went off.

When we were finished with the journals we had a discussion about widgets and how some themes will have them in different places and some themes will just not have them at all.

Then we began a discussion about our journals
Raphael said “I like how he kept the audience laughing, and also kept their attention on what he was talking about”

Hike said ” Art shouldn’t be so low, for example a person who wants to be an engineer will have more classes that relate to math and science while people who want to be an artist will have more classes dealing with art.

During our discussion we talked about how so many people are afraid of being wrong ever though they learn from their mistakes.

After we were done with our discussion we watch a TED that was a motivational video. It was about a book by Daniel Pink called DRiVE.
The video was very motivational and it told us 2 questions to ask ourselves everyday which were, “What is my sentence?” and “Was i better today than i was yesterday?”
    Video link: http://www.danpink.com/archives/2010/01/2questionsvideo

After a discussion about this video Mrs. Lahaise told us to write what we thought was our “sentence” or definition of ourselves.
After we were finished writing everyone read their sentence aloud. Mrs. Lahise told us that we should make our blogs about how our sentences were for example a part of my sentence is “but i like to help people” so i will most likely to blogs about things that help people, but your sentence can change whenever you want it to.

    Hi guys,
So today was Friday and it was a pretty easy period. In the beginning of class Ms. Lahaise helped students who did not have their silent reading book find one from the shelf. After everyone had a book she put up a journal on the smart board. We basically have 30 to 45 minutes to complete our journal and read our books. After we finished our journal entries Ms. Lahaise clarified more details about the site and blogging. She reviewed the steps on how to change your themes, and don’t forget if somethings wrong with your theme email her with the problem so she can fix it. Remember when you put a reference about something from a different blog you need to link the URL so it is not considered plagiarism. After Ms. Lahaise covered the questions about blogging we went over the journal entry. We also discussed why out parents moved from their country over to America and, why or why we do not believe in the American dream. That was pretty much all we did today, and remember we have a vocabulary test on Wednesday because picture day is on Monday!

I pick Gina as the next scribe ! >:)

Scribe post by Gal on 9/13/11:

    Dear Class,
On Tuesday, September 13th. We didn’t do a lot so don’t expect a long scribe today. We came in class and we got a journal which I can’t remember because I’m writing this in an apple store because my computer is not working. After we copied it down we took our first vocabulary test that I should’ve studied for. After that we used whatever little bit of class we had left to finish the journal before the bell rang. Then I went to Ms. Lahaise and told her that my email doesn’t work and I have to make a new one. I’ve been in the apple store since 5:00, I’m starving, and these stools aren’t comfortable.

well okay in 6th period today we learned how to use the website (Lahaiseslar.com) more. we talked about rules and regulations, how she does grades, and a couple features from her site. the first thing we go to do is go on home page and look for the check list. the check list we got to do first before anything. then we can make an account by registering because if we make account first she will just deactivate it first. Also we have to check the calendar every day to see if something is posted. Ms. Lahaise always puts the information we need by 7:30. She told us that every time we have class someone needs to be a scribe and then pick another for next time and make sure that person has not gone yet. I will say the person for next time at the end. the teacher also put examples of scribes on the home page. after you are done with the check list and registration, you will have to look at the tutorial videos to see how to use the blog. To see the videos there is a tab at which u can click and see what video you want to watch. Starting in 2 weeks we need to do the BI-Weekly ( the BI-WR tab), The BI-WR is the blog that we have to post. We post about one article we pick from the selected links Ms. Lahaise gives us. To see how to do the BI-Weekly click on the tab and look where is says instructions. We also need to sign that we read the syllabus. To do this we need to go to the period 6 tab and click on syllabus and digitally sign it. we make blogs every other week starting from 2 weeks from this up-coming Tuesday. We have a vocab test next Tuesday and that will happen every Tuesday. she will give us the words every Friday. There are also examples of blogs that you can check out. Just look for the student blogs section on the home page. One last thing, we usually read 30 minutes every time we have class and we need to read at least 2 books every semester. When we finish a book we make a forum about it or blog. Then once your done reading 2 books you still have to read during class. It counts for points. She grades us fairly easy but there are no extra-credits. In the syllabus it explains everything, you just got to read it.

Thank you for reading my first Scribe and my name is Vlad.
I also pick Gal as the next Scribe.
