The Power of Music

I am here today to talk about music. We all love music and we usually listen to music based on our mood. Feel like dancing? Maybe listen to some Drake or even Beyonce. If you want to listen to music that will get you in your “feels” you would probably choose an artist like Bryson tiller, Phora, or even Adel. But does music make u more or less mentally healthy? You see most people would say less but that is only because they love listening to it so much but it turns out sometimes listening to certain types of music can make you mentally unhealthy and make you lose confidence. And even make you feel unworthy at times. It all depends on what the music is trying to say. If the music is sending out a positive message it will most likely make you feel happy or powerful. If the music is a sad song with a sad message to it, it will make you feel sad or depressed. It can lead you to bring down all the time and that can cause you to become mentally unhealthy.

A study that was written on daze daily  says that ” The study – which took place at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Music Research at the University of Jyväskylä, Aalto University in Finland and Aarhus University in Denmark – tested the neural activity of participants while they listened to happy, sad or fearful sounding music. It then compared the results to several markers of mental health – including anxiety, neuroticism and depression.” This study proves that music does have the power to make you mentally unhealthy. This can be a permanent effect.  Usually when you go into a phase where you have anxiety or depression it usually takes you a long time to get out of that phase. Sometimes you even start developing worse cases because when you are in a mental stage when you are depressed music can just be the starter but then you can stat thinking about other problems that you might be having at it can just make you mentally worse.

Just like Music can make you mentally unhealthy, it can also lift your spirits and make you happier, more relaxed and in some cases can even help you study.  In an article by elite daily  it states that “It turns out, listening to happy music brings up positive memories, while listening to sad music brings up negative ones.”  I 100% agree with this statement. When i listen to happy music it makes me happy and it makes me think of  happy memories.  On this same article it said that there was a study that researchers conducted. They played different genres for different people and right after the song was over they told them to write down a memory. When they played them happy and upbeat music they wrote down a happy memory.

Music can be so relaxing to me. Do any of you feel this way too? Whenever i am having a bad day I just listen to some of my favorite music and i feel as if all my problems go away.  Psych central  did a study and proved that “Listening to music can have a tremendously relaxing effect on our minds and bodies, especially slow, quiet classical music. This type of music can have a beneficial effect on our physiological functions, slowing the pulse and heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing the levels of stress hormones.” I myself am not a big fan on classical music but i do know that it helps you relax. Also a bread tip for when you can’t sleep, Just play classical music and it will sooth your body and will help you fall asleep faster.

Music that is sending a positive message today is hard to find. Now at days it mostly talks about drugs of artist are making songs that are objectifying women.  Music like this then makes boys think its okay to treat women the wrong way.  This can make girls start losing confidence and it lowers their self esteem. Thankfully we still have artist that are spreading awareness. For example the rapper Logic. Logic is an american singer/songwriter. Not a lot of people knew who he was but this year he came out with his album “Everybody” and it blew up. His most famous song at the moment is called         1-800-273-8255.  At first i had no clue why he had a phone number as his song title but i later came to realize that it is the number to a suicide prevention hotline.  The song is sending a positive message out t people who might be struggling. It is letting them know not to be afraid of who they are and letting people know not to be ashamed of who they are. After his son came out the number of people calling to the hotline doubled. They are at the most calls they have ever been at and i think that i great.

This is what music is all about. It is meant to make you happy and make you just want to get up and dance. It isn’t supposed to make you feel worthless or make you depressed. I admire the artist that still try to keep music positive and try to make people happy when they listen to their music. In my opinion music is an escape. For me when i listen to my favorite type of music I am in my happy place.

How Social Media has Impacted our Lives

Social media has become a big impact in our daily lives.i admit i use it every day. It is what i spend most of my time doing but it can also be a distraction when i have assignments to complete. It has evolved ever since Facebook came out in 2005.  Social medias were made to interact positively with those around you but now a days social media can have a negative effect on people. According to “Social media can be used as an outlet for global organizations to bring awareness to the causes they support and spread positive news that traditional media often doesn’t cover. ” This here is the positive effects social media has in our lives. It can also be used for self expression and different ways for people to be creative online. These examples are very positive ways social media has impacted us. However it can also impact us in a very negative way as well.  spending too much time online can lead to mental or emotional illness. The Odyssey online says that “symptoms of anxiety, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder can be triggered by the overuse of social media, as individuals are constantly concerned about their posts and communicating with others. ” This is not good at all. When you are too preoccupied with being active on social media or making sure you keep the communication with your peers going it can possibly lead you to having a mental illness. Spending too much time on social media has also impacted us by not having human interaction. It has created a barrier that has stopped people from spending time with family or friends and not having a real conversation with them. It can also be a problem for your physical health. People do not want to get up and go outside instead they only want to stay inside on their phone. Sometimes I myself feel the same way. I sometimes just don’t want to get up and do things i just want to stay in bed on my phone either watching shows or just scrolling on social media. It has became an addiction in many peoples lives. Some people are just better at limiting themselves to using it to a point where it doesn’t become unhealthy. In conclusion social media has impacted our lives for better and for worse. It is just up to us to decide how we limit ourselves and how we use it so that it can be a positive effect on ourselves and the people around us .
